Rainbow Dash Attack

 

So, basically I made a game similar to AdultSwim's Robot Unicorn Attack, except for the Casio fxcg-10/20 Graphing Calculator (or, for short, the 'Casio Prizm') in C, and with a nice pony twist on it. Point of the game is to dodge thunderclouds, collect apples, and in general not to fall into pits on the ground. You get points by collecting apples and for how long you run as of now. You can fly by holding SHIFT, but you have an energy bar the the top to tell you how much longer you can fly for before your wings stall up.

 

UPDATE: very closed to being finished! Here's a "marketing" video, along with some

still screens from using the official emulator (I couldn't get it to work very fast on

the emulator though; on the calculator, it runs over 25FPS, but on the emulator I'm

lucky if it can go 3FPS -- the emulator sucks). Download coming very soon after I

work out a few kinks and add a "Sonic Rainboom" attack, for dashing through clouds in

a very colorful manner.

I'm thinking of porting it to PC platforms once I release the Prizm version, copying a decent chunk of the code over since they'll both be in C (for the most part -- the PC version wouldn't require the assembly code at all, obviously :P), but facilitate porting using SDL.

interesting idea. from the screens at the bottom, i could see some more wildlife like flowers and bunnies here and there. other than that though, the idea seems like a nice parody and fun to play. ^u^

That's an amazing idea! I'll be sure to add some flowers and some animals for sure (maybe even some parasprites?) One thing, is that I'm not adding a background image. The platform I'm working on is clocked at 58MHz, which is obviously a speed inhibition; drawing a full background seems to rip off a few FPS, and drawing a scrolling background lowers that even more (drawing to VRAM is very slow, so the less drawn, the better the results).

UPDATE: I'm somewhat upset nopony has even commented on the new release, or on the prospect of a PC version... :( Maybe yet another update will help.

 

I am now officially addicted to my own game. Yes, I can't get my hands off of Rainbow Dash Attack. I played it for two hours last night, and almost that much today during school. As Fluttershy would say, "I'm the world champion!" My high score, with the same build you all also received, was 65,048. Beating the supposedly "unbeatable" DSH scoreboard, which topped the highscores list at 50,000 points. The game in which I achieved this took ~15 minutes of concentration to the max.

 

So, I've decided to obviously raise the "unbeatable" points cap, but I've noticed from playing my own game so much, that there is so much potential to make this extremely addictive. Things definitely getting added ASAP:

 

:: Sonic Rainboom attack that lets you safely charge through a black cloud, but entirely depletes your energy bar

:: Slide attack that makes you slide on the ground for a 1-2 seconds, where you can pick up very low-flying apples (which currently can't be picked up... :/ ) and recharge energy twice as fast, but are defenseless for that slide time

:: Green apples appear super rarely, that give you another life

:: Green-and-red apples that give you a huge amount of points, but travel fast and generally near thunderclouds, and are very rare

:: More characters you can meet on the side of the road, such as the rest of the Mane 6, maybe some trees, more animals, and a house.

:: Compress the texture data to cut 300KB out of the add-in size

:: Improved highscore scoring and ranking, with longer input names and "bonuses" for scoring certain "achievements" while playing (collecting all possible apples, meeting all characters on the side of the road, never triggering an energy cool-down, etc.)

 

 

Don't expect all of this for at least a week. But now you know what you can look ahead to for the next release (likely the full, non-Beta version, I shall do another quality check in 2 weeks)

Well, most ponies here prob don't have a Prizm. :(

 

With that said.... I'm pretty sure that if you released a version for PC, then you would have a flood of interest!

The mark of a good game is when the creator(s) of the game can have fun playing the game (and push the limits of the game engine)!

 

All of these features sound like fun. I still don't have a Prizm, but I will be eagerly awaiting the PC version of your game.

Good point, maybe once I have a download for a .exe/.app/.o I'll have a lot more interest spurring :) Hopefully I can get a full PC version out in a week or so, my schedule permitting.

Haha, thanks :) And glad it led to to being a brony, as said in that PM of yours. I've been putting off polishing the game more, since I've been obsessive with pixel art lately -- but I have been planning to update the graphics with new sprites, backgrounds, etc. and improve the programming aspects (it was one of the first full-fledged games for the Prizm and I was literally doing some hacking to overclock the device so that I could render more things on-screen and keep the framerate above 20 FPS -- I eventually succeeded in finding out how to overclock the PLL circuit which allowed for that faster execution)

Yay! this game deserves it!

 

It would be cool if you can make a unique game for each of the mane 6 on the prizm!

I've been thinking about it; the guys over at Cemetech aren't too keen on the ponies, but since there are few Prizm games I'm sure they'll have no choice but to support it ;) If I made another it'd be after I polished this one and updated the graphics, but perhaps a Twily one should come next!

 

In fact, I should probably think of submitting this to EqD; I've made it in before with my pixel art, but never thought of submitting this! I'm sure they'd love it. :D

I'm actually on Cemetech (Globalmap). I will support these pony endevours! I'm not active on there, though :( because I'm not much of a programmer and don't really understand them :(

 

I will try to help out though!

Ashbad, I hope you can make a PC version, and also I hope that they post it on EqD soon.
