Healing crystals, mediation, and spirituality.

So yesterday I came across a video about the effect that crystals and precious stones can have on us. Now, I'm an atheist, so I was initially very skeptical about this. This video explained how crystals have certain frequencies that can interact with our ambient and influence the way we feel. Considering the fact that I am a pretty open minded person, I decided to put a quartz crystal that happened to be in my drawer next to my nightstand. When I woke up in the morning, I put it in my pocket and took it to school.

Honestly, I felt pretty serene and comfortable at school. I usually hate being surrounded by people and having them stare at me, but today It felt as if everyone was just a tree planted on the ground or something. Also, I had quite a lot of energy throughout the day (which I usually don't). Perhaps this could all be a placebo effect, but I'm just curious as to what you guys think.

Also, I was wondering if any of you out there could enlighten me more about crystals and other new age philosophies. I've always been into these kinds of things, as I always thought that they helped you relax. So yeah, anymore information on this sort of stuff? Mediation? Essential oils? etc.

Well the theory of crystal rocks having an effect on the body is far from untrue. In fact there is in some way a spiritual connection between us and the earth that is rather unnoticed. What was found when you brought your quartz crystal with you, what took place was a spiritual connection between you and something that would be overlooked and insignificant. IDK what kinda video it was but it only spoke generally about the effect on a scientific stand point. We connect with such objects with our own energies, but it's not limited to what is listed figures and statues do also posses energies too but it also depends on what kinda materiel it's made of.

Sounds interesting! Is this a scattered philosophy or is it identified as some sort of religion? If it is, which one is it?

Well it's more or less part of our beliefs as wiccans. Those wiccans of Earth Magic particularly are much more akin to the stones and earth based object that give them their strength. Though there are statues and other objects that can give of energy, but they have to be made of materials from the earth. Though some materials even of human made origin can be made to be energized by our energy if we focus only on the object. It's rather complicated to explain really.

I don't want to turn this into a debate pit thread, but my opinion is that crystal healing is a load of woo.

There is no scientific evidence to prove that it is anything more than a placebo.

It is possible to be an atheist and believe in crystal healing/spirituality, but it would be inconsistent if you are a materialist.

I'd hate to say this, but what you've described, what you've experienced indeed seems like a placebo effect. Is there anything beside anecdotal evidence you can provide that seem to confirm this? Perhaps you can guide me over to the video?

As for meditation and spirituality - i wouldn't understand much about any possible immaterial effects it may have on you, but sitting around and clearing your thoughts generally helps you by calming you down and also removes various anxieties or thoughts that may have plagued your mind. I think that from a physical point of view it gets the job done.

It's a placebo effect.

Those "magical" crystals is just ordinarily crystals. The only difference is that the "magical" crystals are more expensive.

Ah, to the rest of you, don't mind me, just browsing random topics. I have no opinions on the topic, having no experiences with crystals. However, this comment bothers me:

I'm aware you're speaking generally, but still, your argument is flawed as RedLotus didn't mention anything about having to buy a special crystal, he had one from before ever watching the video.

Furthermore, from the way RedLotus described it, the video was describing crystals in general, rather than a special kind of crystal.

i don't mean to appear rude, this was just bothering me as he (he being RedLotus) never once mentioned any kind of special crystals or needing to buy anything of the sort.

As a Chemistry student, I know how crystals are formed and their properties.

I can say this is absolutely bull, you're just having a placebo.

I could go into depth as to how crystals are made and their properties but I'd rather not lecture without needing to.

What you are truly feeling is the barest inkling of faith, my atheist friend.

I'm not one into so called "new age" spirituality, rather deferring to the ancient traditions (particularly Buddhism). With that in mind, I can offer some advice when it comes to meditation.

I think that in another life I would be the kind of person who's into that stuff. I even got into tarot card reading a few years ago ^_^ But spirituality is not something I wish to pursue anymore :) Therefore I don't really believe in these "healing abilities". As others have stated, just a placebo effect and nothing more.
