movies/tv WTF is wrong with movie critics?
n1029 replied to KillerKingBakudan's topic in Media Discussion
Dunno how you draw that conclusion. All I can say is they're still relevant, and will continue to be as long as there are still non-big franchise movies being made (which I certainly hope is the case) -
movies/tv WTF is wrong with movie critics?

Social media obviously makes GA opinions more visible now, but studios know that; and they work to control that narrative in promoting movies by using bots and gussying up hype machine blogs with special screenings and gifts in exchange for positive reactions. In that sense critics do still matter because they are the closest thing to a "neutral" voice around the time the movie is released. Audience reactions usually take a couple weeks after release to get an accurate read on because rush viewers are caught up in the novelty haze (related to the stages of grief where they're conflicted between what they want to think and what they really think). And despite all the vague denials of this fact, critics and audiences do eventually tend to be on the same page. Also when it comes to new properties and indie movies screening at film festivals and such, good critical buzz is absolutely essential for their commercial prospects. That's generally the only way major distributors will pick them up and give them a decent promotional campaign and theatrical engagement. -

Show me a film critic that was always "objective" yet still remained a well known and entertaining writer. I guarantee you wouldn't have to look very far in the Ebert archives to see him get emotional. Heck, some of his most famous reviews were the ones where he couldn't keep his composure. "Objectivity" in movie reviews is a mythical concept used as a way to reframe your personal disagreement as what the "truth" is. Even if critics did somehow achieve it, would it really do anything to satisfy the audiences who disagree with them? No one likes being told their feelings on art are "wrong". Movies aren't criminal law, you're allowed to feel about them how you want to, whether you get paid for expressing those feelings or not. -

n1029 replied to KillerKingBakudan's topic in Media Discussion
Ahem... CRITICS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE OBJECTIVE!!!!!!!!!! That is both psychologically impossible for a human being assessing a work of art and not the aim of film criticism in the slightest. There may be certain qualities of art that many agree make it good, but that does not mean everyone has to evaluate it on those terms. The goal of film criticism is to have a unique and interesting perspective that makes your views worth reading; whether people agree with your assessment or not. It is not yours or anyone else's place to say critics (or anyone else) are holding back their true feelings on a movie. No one really knows how they think besides themselves. All these eyeroll inducing hivemind theories like they're all being bribed or being pressured by the PC police, but they're really just human beings who see a lot of movies and get paid to write about them. -

Semantics. Point is non critics can be stupid too. They're no less "unreliable" than you all like to say critics are. -

Do you have real evidence of this that doesn't just involve liking/hating movies you don't? They're at least more honest than that campaign to downvote Captain Marvel before it even released that was the reason the audience reviews got removed. (And I didn't even like that movie either) -
movies/tv WTF is wrong with movie critics?
n1029 replied to KillerKingBakudan's topic in Media Discussion
That's if you're asked directly. This is an open thread that isn't demanding a response. I've become real savvy about the way fan communities work from years of patronizing film sites. Everyone hangs on film critics' every word when they're loving their movie, but they look for any dirt to discredit the critics when they're not. -

n1029 replied to KillerKingBakudan's topic in Media Discussion
Call it disrespectful if you want, but as a rule the people who really don't care about something don't feel the need to announce it. Most of the biggest earning blockbusters have at least decent reviews with a few exceptions, but I see critics as more of a distillation of the public reaction to films than a force that controls what they decide to see. If they like a movie, chances are the audience it's aimed at will like it too. The vice versa is true too eventually once the need for saving face wears off. -
Am I the only one that did NOT like the S9 trailer?
n1029 replied to Kyoshi Frost Wolf's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I guess it's in the eye of the beholder whether that trailer was "depressing" in a bad way or "emotional" in a good way. Slow moody cover aside, it was pretty clear from the clips on display that there were still going to be plenty of light moments to spare. The converse to your perspective is a lot of us appreciate that the marketing recognizes how seriously the fans take the show's characters and stories, and if there were ever a time to be straight about it all, it'd be now with the final season. I don't necessarily want everything to be dark and depressing all the time (and I'm sure it won't be), but I do hope that this last season displays an earnest commitment to bringing its characters' arcs all to satisfying ends; and it should occasionally involve some deeply felt emotion, positive or negative. The premiere being framed and titled as "The Beginning of the End" definitely raises my hopes that they have a good plan in mind. -
3 episodes left for your favorite main character
n1029 replied to FlareGun45's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I feel like there's a great way to tie all that stuff together at the end. While I don't mind the Wonderbolts arc, the structured, rigid style of the profession has to be kind of a drain on Rainbow Dash at some point. She's a lot closer to a Washouts type pony than she was willing to admit, and I can definitely see helping Scootaloo nourish her own dream becoming more of a priority for her than rising up the ranks of the Bolts. I'd certainly prefer it to be an amiable, feelsy departure, though. -

For RD - - Now that I know we'll have another Quibble ep I'll use that as one - Resolution to Scootaloo arc (flying, family etc.) possibly involving her parents and/or Lightning Dust - Realizing how much Scootaloo and her friends mean to her, decides she's had her fun with the Wonderbolts and they aren't really what she wants out of a long term life goal. Leaves them to go back to full time cloud kicking and Friendship teaching. I'd love it if the show had a real mature and realistic yet still comforting moral like that; especially in this age where job security isn't guaranteed. Life is all about trying new things and no career can be counted on to satisfy you forever. -

All the episodes this season including the finale I'm sure have already gone through their script and storyboarding phase, and much of the crew has already left the show and moved on to other projects (Daniel Ingram and at least some major voice actors among them from what I can tell). So it would probably be a lot more stressful for everyone involved to try to get one more season out of it than to just move on and be satisfied with the ending that has been planned, and I doubt you would really get the result you want out of demanding another season even if petitions had any sort of meaning.

Season 9 CONFIRMED to be the last season.

MLP has done a pretty good job earning a male fanbase with the gender diversity it does have. There's not a whole lot of reason to tinker with that beyond some vague notion of maintaining the "suspension of disbelief". It's well established that there are plenty of stallions and other masculine beings in Equestria; the show just mostly isn't about them. And I'd hope the writers wouldn't throw in a bunch of forced romantic subplots in this last season just to serve that dubious purpose. Personally I'm a lot more interested in seeing the established female characters' personal arcs brought to a satisfying close than having precious screentime taken away from them for new male characters.

The fandom's here to stay, for better and for worse. While it's often frustratingly entitled and irrational, it's all I've got if I want to talk about MLP with any sort of nuance, so I don't think I'll ever be able to truly quit it as long as Hasbro maintains interest in it as an entertainment franchise.

Sombra is officially confirmed, of course, but also Patton Oswalt appears to be returning as Quibble Pants at some point, seemingly along with his real-life wife and daughter as evidenced by an Instagram post awhile back. Definitely looking forward to that episode; curious if they'll tie it in w/ Dash and Scootaloo's relationship somehow. I suspect Lightning Dust will also return; that arc seemed unfinished at the end of The Washouts. Also hoping for a bit more from Autumn Blaze.

Upcoming Special: Rainbow Roadtrip.
n1029 replied to CastletonSnob's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I have very mixed feelings on the movie's animation style. I like the basic idea of the Don Bluth influenced flowing movement but the whole thing just felt really confused. The backgrounds and 3D objects were often garish and badly rendered, and the ponies' movements themselves were alternately too stiff and too exaggerated. Seemed like the film often used bizarre facial expressions as a crutch to compensate for the lack of good jokes in the script. Hopefully this special has a little more discipline and maybe a brighter color pallet. -
Season 9 CONFIRMED to be the last season.
n1029 replied to CastletonSnob's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Sounds like all the rough work is already done. Ingram's recorded all the songs and Clare Corlett has finished all her vocal work. Jim Miller said he only has a few months left on it. Hasbro must have really tightened the screws after last year's leak. Best Gift Ever and most of the recent shorts were sealed tight. -
Mainstream fashion has reached a peak balance between aesthetics and practicality. Think the only way things are going to change from here on out is via technological advancement; ie clothes that can be adapted to the weather.
