So I'm in the process of starting my first Tails of Equestria story (working title: "The Caverns of Catrina"), and I have the initial mane cast in place:
-Renegade, an ex-cadet of the Royal Guard booted out of the academy for his obnoxious behavior; in spite of his drinking and leering at mares, he's actually a fairly decent, if socially awkward fellow who values his friends and family.
-Zhira: a black-humored and foul-mouthed dragoness; is initially rather hostile to the others, but comes to value their companionship through their first adventure. Acts as Renegade's comical foil a majority of the time.
- @Emerald Heart: a fiery-tempered and sarcastic earth pony mare whose special talent is emphasising with and opening up to others; as such, she acts as the moral compass for the rest of the (overall) anti-heroic party.
-Jyger: a battleaxe-wielding minotaur, while generally friendly, carries with him the standard hot-blooded and assertive nature of his species. He is also an idealistic, sarcastic flirt (his main target of affection being Renegade, who reciprocates) who is fully committed to spreading Equestrian ideals in his own over-the-top and occasionally violent fashion.
- @Lucky Bolt: a self-admitted prankster, tease, and ditz; her role in the party is the emotional and morale center; she keeps the party's spirits up even in the darkest of moments. She also acts as the group's rogue and intelligence, scouting and spying for any useful information.

@Lucky Bolt Expect her to bond with Renegade due to a shared fondness for troublemaking.

@Lucky Bolt I mean, I gotta reflect our friendship somehow.

I'm still thinking about how we're both writing MLP magical girl fics, and tbh? They serve as nice counterpoints to each other: yours is far lighter and more traditional in terms of magical girl anime tropes, mine is darker, and kiiinda postmodern with how it deals with deeper themes...while also exploring the same tropes in more detail.
If yours is Sailor Moon and Tokyo Mew Mew, then mine is Madoka and Kill la Kill.

And mine isn't MLP tho

So, I'm planning out yet another fanfic, this time based on the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers series. I'm planning to reimagine the series from the ground up, drawing influence from the show (including unused concepts/ideas), movies, comics, and especially from the original sentai itself. Here's the backstory for my version.
SpoilerWe begin in the year 8007 BC, on the islands of Japan. The Eltarian sage Zordon rules over a vast kingdom of five tribes with his wife, the beautiful enchantress Rita. This kingdom was created in a deal between himself and the Fae that dwelled there.I n exchange for protection from five of their greatest champions, Zordon would give the Fae the knowledge held by the Eltarians.
These five, backed by Rita as their sixth member, became known as the Power Rangers, and all was well.
But then, suddenly and without warning, tragedy befell the royal family. Zordon and Rita's young son Kai, affectionately nicknamed "Bubba", is killed by a rampaging mother dinosaur after he destroys her eggs without understanding the consequences.
In her grief, Rita summons the eldritch being Lokar, and strikes a deal with him - give her power to destroy the Fae and primitive humans, and she will reward him with the blood of a thousand young.
And so, in trying to defend their home, the five tribes, including their champions, were killed. In a last ditch effort, Zordon casts a powerful spell that traps Rita and seals her away on a distant planet. There is a great cost, however, Zordon ends up aging himself into dust, his spirit passing on into the astral plane.
All is not lost, however: he has built a base. A place where magic and technology intersect. A Command Center where he can store the Power Coins until Rita inevitably rises again.
-----
So cut to 10,000 years later. August 28, 1993. The rogue planet Nemesis has unexpectedly come into the Earth's orbit; it's not going to do anything harmful, so some astronauts are sent to gather samples. One of them comes across a rather foul-smelling object that looks like an urn. Humorously dubbing it 'the space dumpster', they then argue about whether to open it right now, or bring it back to NASADA for further study. As if compelled by magic, their argument turns into a violent scuffle that inadvertently (?) shatters the urn and releases Rita and her own five most loyal champions.
Back on Earth, Zordon senses a presence. A presence he hasn't felt in 10,000 years. So, activating Alpha V, his long-dormant robot assistant, he tracks five individuals with Fae blood: the descendants of his original Rangers.
Those descendants just happen to be five high school seniors from Angel Grove, California.
So what do you think?

Wow!
Honestly, I like how I created a deeper relationship between Rita and Zordon than even the 2017 movie did. For both of them, it's personal. Rita is hurt by the loss of her son, and for Zordon, he's not only hurt by the loss of Kai, but the fact that Rita is taking it out on undeserved people and not accepting that she made a grave mistake (albeit indirectly) by not ensuring that Kai knew about action and consequence.
-
And that part is why I asked if there was any inspiration from the Sentai.
In Power Rangers, Rita never had a son. However, in ZyuRanger, she did. Her name in that show was Bandora, and she tragically lost her son who was also named Kai. And yes, little Kai was also a problem child that destroyed some dino eggs, causing an angry dino mother to kill him in retaliation.

Brief lyrical fragment I came up with:
"Mojo Jojo Nixon potatoes."

So I decided to take the PolitiScales test, and here are the results. What do you guys think?

@Renegade the Unicorn Stuff like what? The political stuff or conspiracy stuff?
-
@Pastel Heart Conspiracy stuff.
-
@Renegade the Unicorn I think some hold weight. With how neatly structured everything is around the current system and so many odd happenings in history and recent memory with little explanation, I think it's not unreasonable to assume theres more than meets the eye lurking in the shadows...
...Or maybe I just have issues~ nyaha ♡

I see someone likes my superhero universe concept.

I mean, none of my heroes are inherently "good": Infinite is a well-intentioned but self-righteous and hypocritical extremist with major identity and self-esteem issues, Aquaria operates on inhuman morality, Lettuce (while good-hearted) causes unintended mayhem in his path, Ishtar (similar to Infinite) is an ambitious chessmaster, but unlike him, is just misguided and twisted rather than trying to justify and/or deny her goals, Infinigirl (like a lot of teenagers) seems to have a self-centered view of the world, Eisheth is a succubus who is literally just doing her job, and Marvelous is a kid with a lot of issues outside his control that he's struggling to accept and understand.
-
That avatar sums you up very nicely.

Yep, knew it. I'm a libertarian socialist.
Based on how well you guys know me, would you say that's accurate?

Hi there!
-
So apparently, me wanting comics to get back to basics (see my latest status) is, according to some people (no one on this site, don't worry) is apparently the equivalent of shooting the industry in the foot and a refusal to supposedly grow and look forward. Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know high prices, the insistence on decades of continuity lockout and writing for trade paperbacks rather than actual comic issues, and less material for stories and more for ad space was a good thing!

Not entirely, but it could compliment yours.
I just don't like how many long-running comic books can alienate people who are coming into it new for the first time, and then get overwhelmed with tons of comic history they are expected to keep up with. From there, it's either hard to find copies of old comics, or they have to resort to internet piracy, not to mention how trade/collection books sometimes changes or alter the original art.
I am not going to say comics should be more like manga, since that's apparently threatening the industry. But what I like about manga is that (most of the time), they tell a full and complete story and then they end. That's it. They don't carry on forever. They don't reboot or retcon. People can collect all the volumes and have one solid, complete experience. I wish comics were more like that.
Of course, I've heard horror stories about the comic book industry constantly rebooting. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse, sometimes just because they can. I don't mind starting over if you really think you can do it better, but at least complete the last thing you started. Don't reboot just because you can. And if you end up rebooting for whatever reason, stick to it. Don't pretend this backlog of history never happened, then change your mind later down the line, and try to make everything old fit in with everything new. Let new iterations stand on their own.
-
@Toshigami Equine Yes, exactly! Comics are not like manga. They're not written specifically to be collected in volumes, or tell a single story. The problem with the modern comics industry is that they're trying to appeal to "teh fanboiz" with no concern for the casual reader. Hence why I feel comics need to start from scratch - no shared or cinematic universes, no trying to be overtly political or social, just fun stories about superheroes solving problems through punching stuff.
-
But I like that "collect in volumes" aspect! I just don't want any one line of comics to go on forever. I want there to be a stopping point where the story gets complete. I hate when I'm reading a comic, they make a reference I don't understand, and then there's a box at the bottom that says "Read issue #____" (and that's if you're lucky enough for them to point out the previous issues at all). Doing that once or twice might be okay, but not when you open up an endless rabbit hole. "I had to read these issues, to understand this issue and this issue, to understand this other issue, to FINALLY understand the current issue." It's a wonder the comic book industry doesn't sell cliffs notes about this stuff.
My ideas could compliment yours, though. I'm not against crossovers and events, but it needs to be something rare, special, and handled with care. A reward, basically. Not a chore, and not a main event. And if you never read these crossover stories, it should be handled in a way that makes interested in those heroes rather than making you feel like you need to do a lot of research first.

The Dark Heresy group thus far:

Can't really help you there, buddy. All I can say is, nothing's perfect. I grew up Christian, and despite believing in their own "moral superiority", I've seen plenty of modern-day Christians do things that don't reflect the teachings of what they are suppose to believe. It's part of why I became agnostic. Having a belief system, I've found, can be a great starting point in life, but you still have to carry your own weight across the finish line. One way or another, you have to find your own way.
-
@Samurai Equine Thanks. So what does my problem lie in, do you think?
@Blivy I'm sorry I snapped at you like that. I'm calmer now.
