  1. First, thank you to whichever kind soul decided to caption that video you may never read this, but know your work is appreciated. It's gonna be a real conundrum for a greater part of the world in the near future, that's for sure. At the same time, though... I'm almost looking forward to it. No, wait, I'm not evilyet, I swear! I'm just really looking forward to the day the anti-environmentalists and corporations finally have to own up to and admit the fact that yes, our "spaceship Earth" is unsustainable if we don't treat it as such. It's almost simple physics, really—Earth is not a closed system; we get energy from the sun. However, the more indirectly we use that energy (e.g. sources of high potential energy like hydrocarbons), the more the planet starts to feel like a closed system while we wait for all of those potential energy sources to regenerate (hint: they won't in our lifetime). As OP stated, solar and wind are excellent sources of energy, and so are tidal, hydroelectric, and geothermal. Barring geothermal, all of these are astronomically sourced, which I strongly feel is the answer to our energy woes. The sun ain't never gonna stop shinin' in our lifetimes, or our grandkids' lifetimes, or our grandkids' grandkids' nephews' half-brother genetically engineered lizard-person uhh... you get my point. As for the water problem, well... once we get the energy problem sorted out, that piece oughta fall into place shortly after. Reverse osmosis looks most promising for large-scale desalination. Also, I'm glad that video touched on the use of corn for ethanol. Plenty of studies have found it to be inefficient, and large-scale corn farming tends to be highly damaging to the soil. I'm just waiting for the day electrolytically-derived hydrogen fuel cell vehicles become economically efficient.
  2. Great chart! I love seeing physiological reinforcement of these concepts, since there's often debate over the mere existence of some of these disparities (I guess that's my introvert need for validation). Another interesting one is that introverts actually salivate more in response to lemon juice placed on their tongue, suggesting a generally lower threshold stimulus. On a side note, it's pretty strange how the spelling of "extrovert" has so strongly overtaken "extravert", at least in colloquial use. I can't think of a single other word prefixed with "extra" which has mutated in such a way; I guess the constant juxtaposition with "introvert" led to that.
  3. I noticed several posters having difficulties or whatnot acquiring Win 10, so I thought I'd you guys know MS has a tool which lets you pretty much instantaneously get the OS. I needed it to jumpstart the download on a particularly stubborn laptop... http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install EDIT: As for privacy issues, following the instructions here goes a long way (though still far from perfect). It DOES however disable or handicap many features: https://fix10.isleaked.com/
  4. DON'T But seriously, the old aphorism still applies. Y'know why there's such an obesity epidemic in the U.S.? Overfed trolls.
  5. If you haven't found a solution yet, this page helped me with the same issue: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-10-upgrade-notification-enable/ I also have a question for anyone who may know: I've reserved an upgrade for an old computer I have, but I'm extremely reluctant to go ahead with my main, as I've heard that it will DL (yet not install) automatically, and I'd like to have the chance to test it first. Will it be possible to reserve now, but reject the upgrade later?
  6. I will never be able to resist participating in these discussions. What is your MBTI type? ∟INTP Who is your favorite pony? ∟ though FS is a close second~ Which pony are you most like? ∟ What type of pony is your ponysona?(If you have one) ∟See avatar unless you care for your vision If applicable, how do you contribute to the fandom? ∟In a literal sense, I contribute to the numbers... I would love to see more large-scale data gathered on the fandom. The Brony Study's amazing, but it's just not enough data! Have you considered adding a poll?
  7. Finding secure PINs using crowdsourced data? Brilliant! You made me curious too regarding what (I assume) you're doing, so I looked around a bit and read this. It's an interesting conundrum. It seems that as data sets grow very large with increasing counts of identical data, it may be less secure to randomly generate a password. If I were actively trying to come up with a secure four-digit number, I'd first randomly select a number from the median to the minimum of the data frequency (though obviously avoiding either extreme), then run it through a search engine to be sure it doesn't match any instances in popular media. I'd make sure it isn't in the range of about 1900-2100, and contains no or minimal repeating digits or adjacent numbers on a standard keypad/numpad. Collecting data from mlpforums, though, hmm... If you collected a very large amount of data, I'd expect to see that it's markedly different from data collected from the general population, by virtue of this being a gathering place for people who are both similar-minded, yet outliers. Or maybe that's just my out-group homogeneity bias speaking... Oh, and so I don't go off-topic here, some numbers: 8840 6181 1502 9985 1640 8807 0207 5933
  8. For me, breakfast is the life preserver I cling to after a long night of undereating. If I skipped breakfast, I'd probably starve Or if you want the etymological killjoy answer, it's break+fast... A pretty lazy compound if I do say so myself.
  9. I absolutely agree! It's possibly my favorite song from the series. I honestly cried a little when I heard it the first time. As for being underrated, RainShadow, for example, has an upload of the song with about 10k views, well below many of his more popular uploads with about 50k. Not many PMVs either. It's also rare to see in polls for the best song...
  10. Heh, same problem here. I'm 21, half Asian, but people have guessed I'm about 15-16. Doesn't help that I'm incapable of growing a beard. I don't let it bother me, though, because chances are I'll still look decent when I'm older :comeatus:
  11. Oh, yay! An interesting topic right upfront after being gone for a few months. As far as, I suppose, psychological "metrics" go, I really like the MBTI. I've heard it compared to astrology and horoscopes (which for their end goals I suppose is at least somewhat fair...) but generally, if the subject understands the meanings of the dichotomies well, the final result will be pretty well consistent. It fills a purpose which other personality "tests" don't, because most focus on diagnostics and identifying psychopathological characteristics; the MMPI is more of a diagnostic tool than anything, and the Big Five, while detailed, empirically based and far more comprehensive, is better suited to large-scale data correlation than anything. One of the most frequent criticisms of the MBTI is that it is very "black-and-white", since there are only four dichotomies, producing a total of only 16 possible personalities, with no officially built-in mechanism allowing for, say, an ambivert. I like that, actually. The fact of the matter is, unless you design a personality test with over 7 billion possible outcomes, it will always be limited. I enjoy the fact that the MBTI is limiting enough that generalities can be inferred. Yes, you will be "put into a box" to some degree, but it's varied enough (and has been around long enough, with a lot of research being done regarding it) that we now have a simple, relatively easy-to-understand, and widely applicable tool which can say many, often profound and useful things about you and other people. I don't advocate its use as as, say, an employment screening tool, but on the other hand, it can help employers understand how best one of their employees can fit into the business. My main problem with the MBTI is the attached cognitive functions which lack empirical backing. Supposedly, socionics fixes this somehow, but I haven't looked into it too much. Criticisms aside, though, the MBTI is just plain fun to me! Or if not fun, at least introspectively satisfying. It's a real pleasure to see MBTI-described characteristics in action in the real world, such as in the high level of NT- and P-inclined members on this forum. I could talk about MBTI stuff all day... I'm surprised no one's posted this yet: Oh, and if you're curious, I'm an INTP.
  12. Oh yes, it most certainly is. If there's one thing Russia does well, it's make innovative weaponry which actually works. My personal favorite example is the PSS "silent" pistol. (sorry for the massive images, unless you're into that sort of thing [i know I am :comeatus:]) It uses special ammunition with an internal piston to propel the bullet, trapping the firing gasses and negating the need for a suppressor. The slide can even be locked to make operation even more quiet, à la the Mk 22 "hush puppy" pistol, iirc. Cutaway of the ammunition illustrating its function:
  13. That monster of a weapon appears to be the General Electric GAU-8 "Avenger", the only gun that comes with a plane accessory: the A-10. Up to 4,200 RPM of Depleted Uranium API projectiles weighing nearly a pound each. USMCav8r already posted that, but only an image does it justice I've fired it before... You call it "clear", I call it "coarse". Not that I don't like them - it's quite an accomplishment that they managed to design sturdy polymer BUIS. Admittedly, it fits the bill well with the selectable aperture size for low light environments, but it'd be nice to have the precision of something like the KAC 600m irons. Doesn't stop me from eyeing their MBUS pro LR, though... the wide aperture option accounts for about the only complaint I might have regarding the KAC.
  14. 50-caliber pistol, huh? Well, aside from the already well-known Desert Eagle, this thing has been floating around the internet for a while: Of course, it's possibly the most impractical handgun ever made. For a .50 handgun that's actually useful and reasonable, the .50 GI round has been gaining steam. Here's a Glock with the .50 GI treatment: Look at the bore on that! And here's the round next to a common .45 ACP: Ah, I notice you have a set of MBUS on that rifle. How do you like them? Did they come with the rifle or did you add them yourself?
  15. (emphasis added) I have a theory about this - before a pony's cutie mark is revealed, they have actually had it all along. Just as certain genes may not express themselves until a later point in life, and just as puberty (the obvious inspiration for the idea) will inevitably occur for everyone, a cutie mark can't be given because the final result was inevitable (sure it's a bit fatalistic, but that's another topic). If the skill associated with a cutie mark could be magically given, I would expect many ponies' parents would want to select a skill for their children to have, but can't, because it was already predetermined. This also helps explain the second part of my theory - why ponies slowly lose their defining abilities after the loss of their cutie mark. They aren't all grey and dopey up until the point they get one because they already have it, inside of them so to say. That's why during the events of Magical Mystery Cure, the mane 6 don't gain the skills associated with another pony's cutie mark when they get it. Their true skill is within them - the cutie mark itself only has the effect of telling them what it is. When the mark is removed, they lose the knowledge of the skill, but not the skill itself. I assume during the period their abilities were draining due to lack of cutie mark, they were working off of a sort of mental "muscle memory" in order to keep up at least a shadow of their real abilities. As for the problem of why removal of a cutie mark drains their powers, I have another idea about that... their cutie marks are, in fact, the physical avatar of their abilities, which are constantly telepathically (or otherwise) tied to the original owner. When Starlight Glimmer removes their marks, they don't seem to immediately lose their abilities (although if my first theory is correct, they instantly lost their knowledge of it). That was the purpose of the equal cutie mark - it was a sort of magic "leech" designed to transfer their powers into their cutie marks. Starlight placed them there as part of her spell (or maybe it was a separate spell? Probably will never know), which is why the equal mark does not appear by "default" when Tirek steals everyone's marks. It also explains why, when the jars are shattered, their marks immediately return to their owners - they were connected all along.
  16. Got the right idea there! How can you not love the SVD? Powerful 7.62x54 round, reputedly very precise, reasonable weight, reliable gas piston action, good 10-round firepower, the scope's elevation turret comes set up for different ranges corresponding to caliber, includes an excellent stadiametric rangefinding reticle, and has battery-powered illumination. Oh, and the older PSOs even have an IR detector! You mean like this? One rifle I'd definitely love to own is a Primary Weapons Systems MK2 with a 16- or 20-inch barrel: Easily customizable? ✓ 20 round mag? ✓ Excellent comp/flash suppressor? ✓ AR ergonomics? ✓ Super-reliable long-stroke gas piston action copied from the AK? ✓ Reasonable weight? ✓ Powerful 7.62x51 round? ✓ The AR's last round bolt hold-open and linear magazine insertion? ✓ Really, this thing is an amazing all-around weapon. Alternatively, the SIG SG 550: Everything you love about an AR, but with a folding stock and an AK-style charging handle instead of that terrible T-handle. And it's hard to beat the Anzio 20mm for raw power: That rifle in the front is a Barrett. Where is your princess now?
  17. Honestly, I can't believe more people aren't talking about Starlight's powers. Prince Firemane and "Cute Ski Horse" seem to be the only ones really interested. I notice many people calling Starlight an "average" pony as part of the villain's appeal. I partially agree - compared to the numerous non-pony villains such as Discord, Chrysalis, Sombra, Tirek, and the Dazzlings, her abilities (save one) aren't spectacular (exceptional, yes, but hardly the large-scale reality-altering abilities of the former). As Cute Ski Horse stated, though, even Star Swirl, implied to be one of the most powerful unicorns in the history of Equestria, had the modification of cutie marks as part of his penultimate spell (which was unfinished to boot!). Discord, quite possibly the most powerful magic user in Equestria (save a powered-up Tirek) did not remove the mane 6's cutie marks given the chance. Though admittedly it is unknown whether he possessed this ability, he did go through the trouble of removing their horns and wings (and presumably AJ and PP's passive Earth pony magic as well), and when visibly annoyed by FS's resistance, only went as far as corrupting her as much as her friends. In addition, even his theft of RD and FS's wings, given that it affected their state of "winged-ness" is not particularly notable for someone of his power, as Twilight had previously demonstrated an ability to give a pony wings in Sonic Rainboom, even if only temporarily. Tirek, one of the few to possess such an ability, had this as his primary and defining ability, the difference being his obviously demonically-inspired species (which, if Equestria Girls is to be considered Canon, represents a very powerful form) and his origin from a "distant land" - he is clearly meant to be shown as being far beyond the average pony's magic. Twilight Sparkle, about the only pony with which one could make a fair comparison here, was unable to give Apple Bloom a cutie mark, even cosmetically. She even states that "...not even magic can make a cutie mark appear before it's time." Being a well-studied pony, I'd expect her to know what she was talking about there. That's why, for me, the largest twist concerning Starlight Glimmer was not that her equal cutie mark was fake (honestly, I found that part to be a bit predictable), but that the "Staff of Sameness" was fake. It just completely throws what notion I have of a non-alicorn pony's power out the window. Magical artifacts have, by contrast, been shown to frequently have extremely powerful, sometimes reality-altering effects (e.g. the Mirror Pond, the Alicorn Amulet, the Crystal Mirror, the Tree/Elements of Harmony). Starlight's ability to actually rival many of the main villains' defining powers without the use of one of these artifacts seems to me a bit extreme as far as a character goes, but it will certainly provide the potential for an interesting future appearance.
  18. Only just watched that episode today, and the song is already firmly wedged in my frontal lobe. Hmm... somehow, welcoming new members with a dystopian propaganda song seems a bit sinister. Oh well, I suppose it's no different from saying "welcome to the herd"
  19. My Favourite Mane 6 Pony: Twilight Sparkle How did you find MLP Forums?: I've seen it mentioned in a few places, so I decided to Google it one day. Actually known about this forum for a couple years now, and been lurking periodically ever since. How you became a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: This image: No, really.I was derping around the interwebz one day, saw that, and wanted to know who the pony character was. I've never really had any aversion to "girly" things, and I fell in love with the show almost immediately. That was sometime late Season 1, and it's been a fun (endless?) ride.(I have nothing against gay people by the way!) It's been years since I've participated in any forum! I've lurked around a few FiM communities, and this one seemed to have some of the best variety, friendliest people, and good moderation. Been meaning to join for a while, but I have pretty bad social anxiety even online... Reading the Season 5 discussion thread, I suppose I was finally inspired to be a little more social. So here I am... now stop wasting your life here and read something interesting.
