  1. "Our names tend to define who and what we are. For some is it joy, for others helpfulness, some greed. It defines our talents and our roles in life, even if some - like myself - have talents more related to the afterlife." Quinch listened. Well, that said nothing, he thought. Only fair, though. It's either that, or its - their? - given name is their title. Caste society? Secondary, though. He turned to the side and took a slow step, still watching the creature. Most of his systems recharged, and he didn't want to be a stationary target. That, and he wanted to see its reaction. And he was bored with standing still. "Interesting choice of words," he said slowly. He flickered his eyes, cancelling the voice filter. Let's see if you react, he thought as he spoke in his own voice, casual, with an intentional hint of chiding and a little bit of arrogance, if still a little tinny. "Certainly an interesting choice of circumstances - one can be either a victim, or an invader. No room for travelers in your domain? Explorers? Ambassadors?" It doesn't seem to be interested in me, he thought. Rather.... territorial instead. It might explain why it moved to intercept right away.
  2. "I am Vivid Loss." He hesitated, still trying to assess the situation. Name. With a name like that, the Tsoo somehow managed to climb back on the table, but she had neither the deranged kung-fu or spirity look the Tsoo usually went for. Also, y'know, still quadruped. "But who might you be, Human? And what brings you from your world into the Equine domain?" Quinch made a face. Information was fine coming in, but giving it out to an unknown - or even a known - was rarely a good idea. He certainly wasn't going to give it his name, be it birth name or the FBSA registration - he might as well be painting a big bullseye on his forehead. So what was he? Hero? Mercenary? Public servant? Hah. Definitely not that one. "I'm.... a worker," he said. That much was true at least. But everything it said raised more questions. Which, again, still raised the possibility of mind games. Demons were, as a rule, as truthful as they were dishonest, so it was worth paying attention to the fine print. "Magical transportation," he added. Still true. He had no idea how or where or who or even when, but magic was... well, after experiencing it so many times, the sensations were unmistakable. And what did it mean by your world? Metaphorically? Equine domain.... equine. Horses. It did look horse-like.... ish. Minus the long muzzle or long hair. Magic eugenics might explain that. But first.... "Vivid Loss," he considered out loud. "Is that a name, or a title? A descriptor?"
  3. My first IC post in, well, a loooong time! Good job me! > pats self on back Oh, and to avoid any misunderstandings, I'm not aiming to put Quinch in a fight. He's just.... twitchy at this point.
  4. I watched about a minute or so of the video. It's, uh... a little grating for my taste.
  5. @@Blitz Boom "games of love they don't see, and never will until nothing but fear rema-" Quinch was barely into a third of the song he was humming along to when the haze appeared and stopped dead in his tracks. Inertial dampeners online, capacitors charging. Perimeters sensors clear... no, wait, there we go. He felt the familiar tingle of electricity on his skin without noticing it, byproducts of poor isolation. He thought nothing about all this, a sequence of reflexes borne from a decade of danger and paranoia. Consciously, the only thought he afforded himself was being glad he kept his helmet on as the interloper appeared in front of him. He was expecting... well, a lot of things. Smoke usually meant magic, so sorcerers or demons ranked high on the list. This, however, was... new. Quadruped, he thought, checking for weaknesses. He tensed under the bulky suit. My height, so body mass advantage. Clothes, sapient. Horn, possible weapon. Tatoos, spirit magic? Tsoo? No, ridiculous. "Now, what do we have here?" Speech. Definitely sapient. Confidence. Over-confidence? A row of lights turned green on his hud, others still red or amber. Stall. "And what does it make here, so far from its home?" This was less expected. Does it know me? No, "it". General recognition. Distance? Where the hell did I land? I swear, if I have to swim off an island.... That. Or mind games. Voice modulator on. Template, downsample, drop pitch. The music kept playing. Breathe in, steady voice. "Identify yourself."
  6. @@Blitz Boom, it's undefined for that reason, so there's options open for that particular purpose. As for where to go with it, it's your {or any of the other participants', I assume} call - he can be met by someone quickly, and if not, he'll just keep going forwards until he hits town limits.
  7. Oh, sorry! Here's the character profile - https://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/quinch-r8699 Edit edit: Oh, maybe. I forgot signatures are a thing, I turned them off for myself since they add a crazy amount of time to page loads.
  8. Character bio It wasn't exactly the most graceful landing he ever had. But then again, grace was never his strong point. Quinch hit the ground head-first, something that would have snapped his neck in an instant if it weren't for what he was wearing. Instead, the collar went rigid, followed a fraction of an instant by the rest of the suit, and his entire body smashed its weight onto his shoulders as he bounced, literally, like a doll across the dirt. He got to his feet almost immediately, ignoring the protests of his much-abused body. The protests of his brain, on the other hand, got his attention quickly. He was outside. That was a problem. Moments ago he was underground, surrounded by Oranbegan sorcerers. He was towing a load of reprobates on a lead from Azuria about the Seventh Circlet of Hel {in the hands of the Circle of Thorns, but of course}; he couldn't recruit any support, but having half a dozen fire-slinging, gun-toting, wind-bagging idiots and their associated superpowers usually did the job when he could keep their collective attention spans away from anything shiny. This, he thought, is what I did wrong. He'd stepped into the cavernous hall, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, still the best way of getting most villains' attention, and prepared himself for the inevitable barrage of fire that usually distracted the wizards from the deranged kindergarten behind him. But this time, it never came. There was a... blip. Let's call it a blip, the sensations behind magic usually needed adjectives that he never bothered to learn, and then there was this. And also grass. Green, vividly so, none of that junk you'd see around Paragon City that he suspected was probably half-plastic somehow. Teleportation, probably, by his guess he was miles, at the very least, from Paragon. At worst, well, he could hopefully at least speak the language, provided it was English. The mission was a wash, then. Probably was from the start, at this rate he figured Azuria sent him into a trap. Again. He briefly considered giving her a piece of his mind when he got back to city hall, but she'd probably lose that too. He refocused on his surroundings. He heard songbirds through the speakers in his helmet. Definitely out of Paragon city limits, and the lack of rock anthills and ambulatory crystal formations charging him meant he wasn't in Hamidon territory either. There was a treeline about half a click ahead, and smoke - zoom in - definitely smoke past that. His eyes followed invisible lines ahead of him, tracing a pattern of what was basically an eyeball unlock pattern. The HUD on the inside of his visor sprang to life - lifesigns, radar, the usuals. "Adolf," he said, "Run environmental analysis. Activate perimeter alerts." He started walking toward the trees. Smoke meant people, usually. People meant food, shelter and answers to questions like "where am I?", "is there a bar in town?" and "How much for a ticket to Rhode Island?" "And play me some music, please."
  9. Quick and possibly foolish question, but are there limits to the types of OCs one can introduce? I.e., are humans {booted from other dimensions} out of bounds?
  10. Each and every time I boredly halfass my turn in openXcom. I should have seen them coming. But nooo, motion sensors take effort to use!

It's been a while since I've played as I got a little frustrated by not being finding servers where people chat - if there's no communication, I might as well play with bots. I am keeping an eye on the PAC server, but it does seem like it needs to be updated.
  12. Ditto Discord, powerful, but with nobody relying on him, thus there's little risk of screwing up something royally. Assuming I get to be a copy of him, I don't want to erase anyone from {a fictional} reality.
  13. I do have a question, though - who are you all?
  14. Twilight x Diary OTP? {she is a book lover}
  15. Well, here's the thing - there's six elements of harmony. There's nothing to imply there aren't other concepts that have their own element incarnates.
  16. Hmm, that might be a little tricky. I might say Element of Altruism, though that might be a pretty big word for a children's show. Failing that, maybe Element of Determination?
  17. I don't really think I've read any depressing fanfics. I've read a few sad ones - Simply Rarity, for example - and wrote one when I was feeling really depressed, but I do tend to be partial to happy endings.
  18. Whoah. That is nice, and I don't even know the original.
  19. Here's the flaw that I see with your argument - Starlight Glimmer isn't a villain. She's the antagonist, and while these two things frequently overlap, they aren't synonymous. In fact, half of the video you showed reams her out on the premise that she fails to be the cackling menace she's apparently expected to be, and the other half for not acting like a perfectly rational robot with unerring prediction of consequences of her actions. Short version {I can write out a longer one, if anyone wants}, she's not a villain - she wasn't written to be one either. Rather, she was simply a person with issues and potential they chose to put to use, even if it was for a misguided goal.
  20. It might just be my age showing, but the topic does seem a bit reminiscent of Dragonball Z powerlevel debates of old, but for lack of a reason not to, I figure I might as well toss my two cents into the ring, if nothing else, for the sake of debate and mixed metaphors. To begin with, the question seems to be flawed, since it does seem to conflate magical aptitude with magical power. For example, an example of contest of magical power would have been the brief battle between Chrysalis and Celestia in "A Canterlot Wedding" where two characters engaged in what would amount to magical arm-wrestling. In fact, one could argue that Twilight is more powerful than Starlight, as her bubble shield was able to withstand Starlight's magical blasts. But I digress. The best point to begin with with any analysis of a character, I believe, is to consider the circumstances that led up to their development. Firstly, the event that crystallized Starlight's philosophy, and ultimately her goal, was her separation from Sunburst, the event that she blamed solely on his cutie mark. One could argue that his being sent away was no reason not to stay in touch, whether by letters or visiting, but what is strongly implied is that they didn't. Reasons are left up in the air, but given Starlight's comments on how one's cutie mark can allow somepony to feel more special than others, it's not difficult to imagine that, as a blank flank whose only other friend was another blank flank, she saw cutie marks as a symbol of isolation from other ponies, especially if her town sported its own version of Diamond Tiara. In fact, it is even plausible that Sunburst himself thought, and told Starlight that his magical talent, and by extension his cutie mark made him special, whether or not he was aware of the effect his cutie marking {we need a better term for this} and subsequent shipping off had on her. Now, let's fast forward to Starlight Glimmer's own cutie mark, however soon or late it comes, and as it turns out, it's magic itself. And if you combine a great deal of personal potential with a deep-seated resentment, if not outright hatred for one specific thing, it provides the perfect catalyst for a force that can move mountains themselves - focus. Filled with conviction that all cutie marks are bad - they break apart friendships, after all - and the potential ability to remove them, it's easy to imagine Starlight making it her tour de force to spread the equality brought about by a cutie-mark-free society, which in turn brings us to the Equality Village. I'll skip over Starlight's motivations, that's a topic for a different thread. Instead, one of the main things to take away is, at the end, when she tries to blast Twilight with the decutifying spell she used - unaided, it bears pointing out - she does proclaim that she'd been studying that spell for years. If we take that literally - that the spell existed prior, in some form or another, and Starlight either mastered or modified it, it implies that she has access to resources about less known spells. If we assume she developed it from scratch, that implies that she has considerable intelligence and talent when it comes to magical spells. So, finally, that takes us to the conclusion. It bears focusing on the fact that the array of spells Starlight Glimmer used is hardly expansive - in fact, we see magical blasts, which seem to be a somewhat vanilla unicorn ability in the FiM universe, telekinesis, apparently inherent to all unicorns, floating, and finally the "force crystal" spell which appears to be rather new. Given her apparent history, it is hardly unimaginable for her to have access to or have developed the latter two, especially as her bragging about how easy it was to modify Starswirl's spell implies that she has a knack for experimental magic.
  21. For someone on the budget looking for a tablet with a screen, I've heard good things about Yiyinova MSP19U. No firsthand experience, but passing it on.
  22. It's kinda tricky to see from a photo of a picture, but overall, it looks pretty great to me. One tiny issue with the ear shape, and a bit small wings but I actually had to go looking for flaws to spot those. Is that watercolor?
