On record dude, you only need to post the link to the youtube video, not the stupid stuff. It's annoying when you're typing it out. Ain't it?

Yeah, I'm still used to typing out the coding, like some of the other forums I go on that make you do that.

I know that feel. A bit of a bitch sometimes, especially when trying to remember not to post the picture, but the url instead. :P

Justin Broadrick is kind of a godsend, wouldn't you say? With his work in Godflesh and Jesu. It's all good.

It's amazing how well these forums (along with another) have dramatically changed my taste in metal...

I've only been on this forum a few days, and its already been awesome to hear the metal that other listen to. All the other forums I've been on lack metal fans to talk to and share music with, so this has been an awesome place to hear some great metal music.

And now for pretty much the first metal band I ever listened to, still sticks with me as one of my favourites, even if their newer stuff is not as good as their classics.

Anyone post some NeoClassical Metal yet?

I think a while back someone did. Forgot the guy's name unfortunately, but he had a King Crimson/MLP crossover avatar, and he was pretty cool in my books.

In other news, I just bought Alien.

Here's my problem though. I'm at a point where I can't stand it when metal bands use classical instruments in their music when they should be left separate from this genre. At the same time, so many bands have put out so many good records that incorporate this element. So you could say I'm at a crossroads with this.

I can agree with that a bit. It doesn't work all the time. I mostly like it in bands that can do it well in my oppinion.

(edited)

I'm such a Tool noob. I will say that their albums are TOO LONG. Aenima and Lateralus reach almost 80 minutes. It's kind of insane.

Undertow, while not as intricate or "progressive" as the later stuff, is really heavy and dark. If you don't listen to a lot of Tool, you should give that a try :P

The latest band I've been looking into: Gorguts. You might recognize their new bassist from another band. :D

Is anyone here an Ayreonaut that could explain this project to me?

iPod is being stupid, so I can't actually listen to the song.

Are asking what Ayreon is all about, what that album is about, or that specific song (you'll have to tell me which song it is, though, because like I said, iPod won't let me watch the video.)

You know you're a fan of Devy if you can listen to Physicist and actually enjoy it.

I'm gonna agree with everyone who says this, it IS toned down SYL, but its enjoyable by my standards.

He's asking about the album itself. Universal Migrator - Part 2: Flight of the Migrator

This is just to get your attention.

So, Universal Migrator starts out somewhere around the year 2085-2086. A massive war has wiped out all of humanity except for a small martian colony, which was built specifically so humanity could survive if the war really did end up totally fucking the Earth to hell. However, something happened, and the colony doesn't have the equipment to be self sufficient yet, so without supplies from Earth, everybody starts to die.

Now, there's not a hell of a lot to do on Mars, so the colonists brought with them these super advanced virtual reality computers. You plug yourself in, and experience whatever you want to.

The las human left on mars (who happens to also be the first person born on Mars) is bored out of his fucking mind and is depressed and going to die soon, so he plugs himself in and runs the Preincarnation program, which lets you relive your past, as well as past lives your eternal soul has experienced. He goes back, reliving his childhood. He learns to forgive his dad for breaking his promise to bring him to Earth one day.

He goes back further, to one of his past lives as a women during the war, and first learning that a Martian colony will be set up to hopefully let humanity survive the worst.

Further back, he is a child, watching the moon landing on TV with his family, and dreaming of becoming an astronaut. At this point, his thoughts return to his normal body, and he laments the fact that he has only lived his life away from Earth and that he doesn't "want to be the Man on Mars".

He continues living past lives, and is a soldier in The Shooting Company of Captain Franz B. Cocq (which is a famous painting). The song goes back and forth between describing it as the original company of soldiers, and describing the painting and it's artist.

He relives a past life in which he is a sailor servin under Queen Elizabeth during that one really famous war against the Spanish where Francis Drake, a lot with a huge ass storm, totally fucked up the Spanish Armada (Song is called Dragon on the Sea, and it is fucking DIVINE :D).

Further back, he is a temple maiden serving under a Mayan priest.

In Carried on the Wind, he is Ayreon, the main character of the earlier Ayreon album, The Final Experiment. In a nutshell, scientists from 2085 found a way to send thoughts back in time, and try to send visions of the war back to somebody, hoping that he will warn people. However, they can't control who or when the visions happen, and they end up going to a bard in medieval times who everyone thinks is insane, so nothing good comes of it.

Further back, he is a peasant of some sort, watching the origins of Stonehenge. Some Druids were casting a spell to do... Something, and it turned them all to stone, either by accident or on purpose.

Even further back, he learns that not only is he the last human, he was also one of the first humans. He lives with his tribe, hunting, sleeping under the stars, and reveling in the fact that he can now experience Earth as a pristine, virgin world, untouched by the technology that has been his entire life.

At this point, the computer wakes him up and tells him that he can be taken back further to the origins of his own soul, but needs confirmation, since nobody has ever gone back that far, and it is uncertain if it will work. He doesn't really give a fuck and keeps going.

He goes back and finds the first soul, the Universal Migrator. The UM travels around, dividing himself to make more souls so they can populate other planets. The UM takes him on an epic journey through time and space, and even dimensional wormholes. They travel near Planet Y (which is significant in the album 01011001; it is the birthplace of the beings who created the human race in an attempt to regain their emotions and stop their race from dying out. IIRC, they do start to feel again, but die out anyway).

After the journey is over, the computer overloads and crashes, and the man dies. However, it turns out that he went so far back that his soul actually separated from his body, and the journey he went on was real, not virtual. The UM informs him that his time is over, and that the man will be the new UM. The first thing he does is return to Planet Y to rebirth its inhabitants, starting the cycle over again.

Warning though, it is the kind of music that not everyone is into, and there are some controversial lyrics.

Welcome to the metal thread. We will be your guide.

Really though, just throw what seems controversial out of your mind when you post songs around these parts.

Have a song about sex with a corpse.

Holy shit, why haven't I found these guys earlier?! They are full of awesome. Check them out.

It's hard to believe they are so "unknown", when they sound so good.
