technology I need computer help, please?

Just going by what I hear from ex-employees. Turned down, was "overqualified." Had I known they were looking for salespeople and not techs, maybe the situation would've been different. As I understand it though, anything beyond a simple expansion card install or a drive wipe is sent off to their service centers, so troubleshooting is probably not something they're looking at for staffing at a store location.

 

Totally agree.  Troubleshooting and Help Desk Support is something I don't see in them, but more of Sales.  Yet, im not sure if the facility has spread, but Microcenter (an All Computers/Electronic) has amazing techs who are professionally trained.  Now that would be a perfect choice for people who need assistance with their PC's.  And also, they don't charge you, until they see the problem and ask you if they want to perform diagnostics.  Geek Squad doesn't do that, at all, :(

To be honest, the OP's problem is one of the hardest to troubleshoot.

 

No error messages, no nothing, just random freezes.

It could literally be anything :(

 

I agree.   It was the hardest problem I came across, tbh.  :(

It's very difficult to troubleshoot without actual physical access to the computer itself. If the system restore doesn't fix it, then hopefully the store that sold it can figure it out.

 

My money's (all 2 cents of it) is still on RAM though. RAM issues can manifest themselves in the strangest ways. The last time I had an issue like that, it turned out to be the SSD though. I didn't make that connection until the system freezes happened exactly when the HDD indicator went solid.

Well, if the RAM was faulty, the computer would likely bip on startup. I think.

 

Not neccessarily. BIOS RAM checks are notoriously unreliable for detecting minor errors in memory. If it did cause problems starting, the problem is likely to be major or perhaps even a loose RAM stick (which would definitely return beep errors if none of the sticks were installed properly.)

 

Slight problems with RAM can cause intermittent system freezing. I imagine the store would run a memory diagnostic since it's free and they're not likely to start throwing hardware at it unless they really have to.

Yes, it might be worth using a MemTest and run a few passes.

I get mad when my Windows Server craps out, b/c that one is a pain in the ass to troubleshoot, tbh.  The rest are alright to deal with, :lol:

Okay I finally found out how to System Restore. It's under recovery for some reason on Win8 because they think it's fun to confuse people. Yay. So I'm doing that now. I picked the first possible point to restore it to. Fingers crossed it will work.

How many GB of RAM do you have?

After the restore, you can run a MemTest+ to test the RAM for a few passes.

 

What do you mean by " a different sound ?"

Ok.  The 4x2 and 2x4 is what I'm also trying to figure out as well.

1. Download Memtest86 and write it to a flash drive using the included imageUSB software

2. Boot to the flash drive

3. Let it run for a while. I'd say an hour or so.

4. Give us the results and we'll try helping you from there.

You could test the RAM, but if the system's only a week old, save yourself the hassle and take it back to them for a fix. If you really wanted to, you could run the test and if anything comes up, it might be helpful to let them know about, but otherwise, you paid for a working system so that's what you should get.

I'm not sure about the gb, it just said 8gb.

 

Well my old pc (8years) used to be really noisy so when I first booted up this new one I immediately noticed how incredibly quiet it was. No beeps and no humming at all. And then on the Monday I noticed on startup it made a sound like if it's reading a cd. Like floppy disc music kinda. And then it froze a few hours later.

I would personally not count in hours but in number of passes. I would say to let it run for 3 passes. But not too much either.

To be honest if the restore doesn't work, I will bring it to the store. I really don't want to open it up and try to mess with stuff. It's brand new and it should work. It's just annoying me so much. But the store is a bit far and I don't have a car, so I wanted to ask you guys first if there was something easy I could try.

 

But really thanks for helping, it's nice you guys are so fast and kind.

Well, if the restoration does not work, you will have to either :

 

1) open it and start "messing with stuff"

2) bring it back to the store.

 

If you choose to go for option 1, I will be more than glad to help. :)

I'm sorry you have to deal with this with a new PC. As a question, who did you buy the machine from? Because I've noticed a lot of "botique" PC manufacturers, at least in America, have poor quality control and frequently ship overpriced PCs with faulty wiring or parts.

I bought it in a Dutch store here in my town called 'Budget PC'. I don't actually speak Dutch and I didn't order it myself so I don't know if they left out some vital information like 'drivers not installed'.
