Should I leave safe mode first before trying to restore? And how do you leave safe mode?

I would definitely not replace it myself because I have no idea how. And it's a week old, I am not spending more money on it myself. If it needs fixing up hardware, it should be under the warranty. But I want to make sure it can't be fixed without it going in the shop first.
Replacing hardware ain't as jarring as you probably think it is. Might seem that way at first, but after a few times it'll be a routine affair.

Also, to leave Safe Mode, you just reboot the PC normally.

I shut it down and turned it back on twice and it's still in safe mode.

No, to leave Safe Mode, you have to go to MSconfig and untick the box that I told you to tick earlier.

And, for system restore, do it in safe mode.

EDIT : I quoted the wrong person

  1. Go to Control Panel

  2. Click System and Security

The second or third, it should say, System

It will show you basic info of your PC

Once you are there, to the left, click on System Performance (third one on the list)

A new window will appear and on the tabs, click on System Protection.

Once you are there, you should see System Restore.

At System Restore, choose the earliest date, then proceed.

This system's a week old... why not just take it back, tell them what's happening and have them figure it out? Might as well use the warranty if it's there.

If the system restore doesn't pan out...

Really? Because whenever I go into safe mode, just rebooting works.

It's been that way with Windows 7 and previous versions. Windows 8 requires you to select/deselect a checkbox in MSCONFIG to enter/exit safe mode.

That is because you go through the BIOS to boot in safe mode. She went through MSconfig and ticked the "Safe Boot" box.

She will stay in safe mode until she unticks that box.

Ah, I see.

If you feel uncomfortable with replacing hardware, then... maybe it'd be probably better to just take it to the shop and telling them what's wrong?

That could "possibly" work if System Restore fails.................................One thing though, Mai.  Stay the hell away from Geek Squad.  If you are near a Microcenter, those guys are good.

I'm just talking about taking it back to the people who built the machine. Geek Squad doesn't build machines to my knowledge, thankfully.

Oh, you mean shipping the machine back to the manufacturers..............IMO, it depends on the issue.

Went through 8 different ASUS motherboards and it wasn't worth sending back b/c of the cost.

What is Geek Squad ?

Sounds professional

Geek Squad works alongside Best Buy (over here in the US), and they work on fixing PC's.   However, from what i can tell you when I worked their, 3/4 of the employees, don't know shit about a PC.  Makes me laugh in a way, b/c they hire whomever, instead of hiring professionals.   Worked with them for 4 1/2 years and just left b/c of their stupidity.  Basically, they'll give you one of those half-ass supports, and only would say, to get another, and trash the old one.

I would trust these guys to fix my system.

They charge $20 a stick to install RAM.

There punk ass thieves i tell you.  They even lie about your system so they can make money.  Would never recommend clients to them.

20 dollars. !

Oh come on, RAM is the easiest thing to install in a computer.

If you think that's bad, installing a Sound/Graphics card from these people is $40 over here in New Jersey.

Wow, I always install everything myself.

Takes a couple hours but it's free

Not everyone knows how or cares to learn -- and Best Buy is right there for them. :fiery:

Same here.   I've got 10 PC's in my house and i built every single one.  Rather build them, than to spend money on a piece of horse shit PC like DELL and being forced to send it back b/c the PC is damaged, XD.  TBH, I find it easier to customize my PC, the way I want it to run, :) and for that matter, its cheaper.

Yeah.......the half-ass bastards of Geek Squad,.  Yet, I have to agree fully with you that not too many people know how to use a PC, and they think the obvious, when their PC craps out, its like "Oh my computer died........time to buy a new one." type of thing.  I think ppl are just lazy,

Just going by what I hear from ex-employees. Turned down, was "overqualified." Had I known they were looking for salespeople and not techs, maybe the situation would've been different. As I understand it though, anything beyond a simple expansion card install or a drive wipe is sent off to their service centers, so troubleshooting is probably not something they're looking at for staffing at a store location.
