Why not spend a around $30 more and get a 290X instead?

Not really worth it, imho: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1068?vs=1056

290s are going for around $200 used right now, which is an absolute steal. If I can find a killer deal on a used 290x (200-210) then I'll probably go with that though

AMD Afterburner 6450. It's not the best, but I'm getting a better one sooner or later.

Right now, I'm focusing on a Core i7 processor.

I agree with Daring, if you're strictly gaming, don't waste your money on an i7. That i5 will do you good for a while. What's your budget for a GPU?

Okay. Thanks for the ideas, Celli and Daring.

About $300 for an NVIDIA graphics card

@@GamerDash2012,I don't know if you'd be willing to spend $50 extra if you're strictly sticking to nvidia, but the gtx 970 is a really good high end card for $340. If not, the 960 is a good one for around $250.

Asus has a 290x for $300 if you want AMD, and you can't go wrong with AMD, either.

I might look at those choices. They don't seem bad.

Of course, I'm looking for one that runs smoothly and lag-free.

My brother came home with another thrown out PC again, and this one looks better than the one that I've been using, the one he brought home a few months ago. It has a GTX 275 which certainly isn't the worst thing ever, but the real score here is the processor-some sort of first-generation i7, as that's what the motherboard in it supports. Throw in a new mid-range GPU and overclock the processor and this thing will be solid.

Unfortunately it doesn't have any ram in it, so I'll have to order it online, and hopefully I don't receive the ram just to find out the CPU or motherboard is busted. Still, great find.

Also, relating to the above conversation, the gtx 970 can be found for as low as 310 dollars new, sometimes less. And the r9 290 is ~$260 new and bites at the 970's heels.

Both of those GPUs will max out any game no problem.

The hell do you live, you luckly bastard?

Whenever I find discarded PCs is just "bought it at Wal-Mart" grade crap that you're parents would use to check their e-mail and read Facebook.

My bro works for a junk removal company (San Francisco Bay Area) and he finds valuable things all the time when hauling the stuff into the junk truck. A month or so ago he found a brand new, $200 backpack and he's brought home several rather nice bikes. He doesn't usually work in particularly "rich" areas either.

We're probably going to start selling the stuff on Craigslist soon as a little side business at this rate.

And in case anyone didn't know, the Gtx 950 came out. http://www.anandtech.com/show/9547/nvidia-launches-geforce-gtx-950-gm206-the-lesser-for-159

Lucky him, I worked cleaning with my Stepdad as a teen and the best I ever found was a working NES.

The CPU runs in the mid 80's though while playing C:S, so I'm going to upgrade the cooler ASAP.

Here it is in all its glory:

AMD should be good in everything that isn't Ubisoft.

Well, goodbye for Skyrim.

That looks like mine, my Gigabyte motherboard is red and with LEDs.

I took out my Intel fan and replaced it with a giant Cooler Master fan.

I just replaced the stock fan today as well, it took like 3 hours because I had to practically disassemble and reassemble the whole PC to install it, but it was worth it IMO. Now it's running the Prime 95 "Small FFTs" torture test at under 60 degrees c.
