Seriously though, we had Luna as Nightmare Moon in the first two episodes of Season 1. What would it be like if Celestia was a/the villain in either season 5, or just in general?

If she was a villain, then she will be a tyrannical leader abusing the ponies of Equestria. Just picture a leader in our world's history that was tyrannical and have Celestia be similar to that.

I do like the idea of her briefly turning evil somehow and Twilight being the one to save her. I can sorta picture it in my mind.

Discord isn't hated, he has the opposite problem. He gets turned into a Mary Sue hero who was just misrepresented by the evil Celestia. But wanking one character can't exist in a vacumn, Celestia is just the most common target for the villain syndrome

Nope. The reason Luna turned into Nightmare Moon is because she was jealous of how the ponies aren't awake during the night. Not only that, but we've seen numerous times that Tia is a genuine character who doesn't mean any harm. I also feel like that would be glorifying Luna, but that's a different story.

 

If we want to see Celestia's flaws, we should show them without giving her a super-powered evil form. Not every character needs one of them to show off their flaws.

There's a great fancomic I wish I had favorited that does this perfectly. It's rather short, but good. It's just Celestia lamenting to Twilight after the Canterlot Wedding about her failures, wondering if she's really fit to be princess and if Luna was right when she tried to depose her.

 

It's a pretty emotional thing and ends in a fluffy moment of Twilight and Celestia forgiving each other 

 

This isn't it, but it's a good example. Both are portrayed as flawed and neither is the bad guy. If you want a Celestia story with lots of flaws, her regrets are probably a great way to look at it. Celestia has a lot to regret, this is canon and know for a fact

Then Celestia tastes the rainbow, and then it turns out that she was possessed by some evil (not-Discord) force, and then Twilight is all like:

With Twilight Sparkle being Goku. After big bad is soundly crushed, turns out Celestia was good all along, and everything goes right back to the way it should be, because why wouldn't it? Was anybody honestly expecting a bad ending?
