Extent of Rarity's magic

It seem's like Rarity's horn in the show is used like a pair of hands almost has she got any notable spells other than the gem finding spell. It's easy to overlook the fact that she's a unicorn sometimes.

Didn't Twilight and Spike state that most unicorns only know how do do one spell, aside from basic levitation?  It may be that Gem Finding is her only real magic aside from Levitation.

Really i guess i must've overlooked that :S how comes Twily can do so many? I woudlv'e just compared unicorn magic to human learning;pretty much infinite. I just assumed that with Rraity being such an established business mare the last thing on her mind would be magic.

Because her cutie mark is about tricks and flashy magic, I believe. Many unicorns seem to have cutie marks that revolve around a specific magical ability or affinity to something (see Rarity, gems). Twilight, however, is an exception with her talent being magic itself.

Well she's a show performer so she can only use illusion magic but as for what she did in magic duel was because of the alicorn amulet, the show never tells us the extent of the alicorn amulet so even though Trixie's talent is show magic/illusions the alicorn amulet could and or can let unicorns preform spells beyond their magic and also the manifestation spell, well it kind of goes into everypony's magic because Rarity was manifesting fashion, and beauty as opposed to let's say Trixie would be able to manifest great illusions so there.

Uhh, actually no. And Rarity is certainly capable of performing more than one spell.

Rarity has also performed transfiguration and illusion based spells. I rank her abilities above average for a unicorn, possibly based on her personal determination that she has show time and again. Also her levitation is far from simple.  :grin2:

She seems to at least have some kind of mending power. She puts branches back on trees I think, and she magically fixes a broken wheel. Also she's doen a few clothing related things, like putting clothes on ponies without them having to actually get in.

Indeed. In Games Ponies Play she was able to work on Cadence's mane whilst levitating several gems at the same time. I can't imagine something like that would be easy to do, particularly since it appears that levitation actually does require you to concentrate. Yet she can apparently levitate multiple objects while concentrating more on something else. That's pretty impressive.  

 

Also, does anyone else really want Rarity to learn teleportation? I know I do...

I don't think the writers have indicated her upper limit. Anything having to do with creation or mending is fair game. She's not Twilight, but she's impressive all the same.

Rarity doesn't lack for power or precision in her magic. Way back in Season 1, she was swirling an entire shop's worth of stuff in a hurricane.

Twilight strains to spin a few animals in a figure of eight in Season 3... think about that.

But Twilight can use alteration, conjuration, restoration, and destruction.    Sorry, couldn't resist.

 

Rarity is obviously quite adept at the types of magic she does, but she definitely can't do as many or as powerful of spells as Twilight, which is how it should be, since Twi's talent is magic.

Do we really know what exactly is the average for unicorns? Except Twilight pre-season 3 and Rarity, we don't often see the everyday life of a unicorn...

Maybe the others unicorns know some spells apart from levitation too, but we never see them using them.

As stated, Twilight is an expert, with years of study under her and a talent in magic to boot, so it's not unreasonable to show her as being one of the most capable magic users currently alive.

 

That said, Rarity is actually no slouch herself. She knows enough about magic to be able to cast a spell she's only read once, as seen in Inspiration Manifestation. She may not be up to Twilight's level, but she knows more about it than she typically uses in her day-to-day life.

 

Trixie's magic, on the other hoof, is diverse, but pretty much all geared towards performances. Her cutie mark seems to represent not magic, but magic shows, as the two elements in it are a cape (for a costume, much like she wears on stage) and a magic wand (which have never been shown to have been actually used for magic anywhere in the series).

Now hold on, that's not a valid example at all. Reading the spell was casting it, she didn't have to do anything.
