I think Spike's affection towards Rarity is more of a childish crush than anything, like how 70's children saw Daisy Duke. He'll outgrow it, and see her as more of a close friend than a love interest. He is still considered a baby dragon.

 

Also, I can't see Rarity being a cougar pony.

It is as species and age difference, Spike was an egg when Twilight was tryin to pass her test, now imagine if Rarity and Spike will be together, lets say they want a love child, how is that possible? Play with fire, you get hurt. As far as we know, ponies and dragons dont do well in love relationships.

 

I would feel bad for spike, that's all. I think Rarity may of played off his emotions once, IF that. Rarity has a lot on her mind, and she has made it very clear her (slightly) unrealistic credentials for her mate. Spike knows that.

 

I view it no differently than any elementary school boy's crush on his young and attractive teacher. And that is all Rarity views him as, a young, baby dragon. Hence the Spiky-Wiky.

No, thats Biology, which to our understanding, the show still follows. What I believe is Spike's attraction is a dragons attraction to anything beautiful. I believe Rarity is one of the "gems" of all pony kind, hence his selfish dragon side wants her. We see that is the episode where spike gets greedy.
