Name: Thunder Storm

Species (Unicorn/ Pegasus/ Earth Pony/ Crystal Pony/Griffin): Pegasus

Approximate Age (Foal/Young Adult/Adult): Young Adult

Mare or Stallion: Stallion

Height (Feet and inches): 5 ft 2 in

Weight (in pounds): 100 lbs

Eye color: Blue

Mane color: Dark Grey

Physical Description: Yellow-orange coat, shaggy-ish dark grey mane and tail, blue eyes

Occupation (Optional): Pyrotechnician - Fireworks

Other distinctive features (if any): Soot spots occasionally, a white lab coat

Backstory (A little more about your character):

Thunder Storm had always been a bit of an oddity among pegasi. Where many pegasi were into air/weather professions, he was more content with solid ground beneath his hooves. To this end, he employed flight to quickly get away from an issue. It would serve him well later on as he learned that there was a whole open world that nopony had actually ventured into yet, or so he thought. One of his favorite subjects was science, and he delved into the many books that were always at the local library. Every time he was at a library, he always hit the science section to study something. His interests in specific sciences changed with the moon, but it was always in a general section. It was on one visit that he opened a chemistry book, flipped to a random page, and discovered fireworks.

Intrigued by the idea of fireworks, he went to a general store and picked up a small bag of party poppers with a small bit of his weekly allowance. Many foals would pull at the odd string until a bang sounded off and colored paper flew out of the wide end of the popper, at which point they'd either look down the popper and see what made that funny noise and caused the funny paper to shoot out or drop the now spent firework and cry because the loud bang scared them. Thunder did the former, at least the first time around. He pulled another string on another party popper and got the same result.

Earlier books he had read had informed him of something called the "scientific method" - observation, a hypothesis, an experiment, and a conclusion. He knew that if the results from something he did didn't live up to his expectations, then something else was most likely a reason for the strange new occurence. When he pulled the two strings, he got two loud bangs. So, as was completely disadvised against by the warnings on the party popper, he proceeded to dismantle it and found a strange cylinder of paper. He pulled the string, only to find it was attached to something on the inside, so he unrolled the cylinder to find an odd brownish substance. "What is this?" he asked, then headed to the library.

Once there, he picked up a book specifically on fireworks. He learned that the brown substance was actually a mixture of a couple somewhat volatile chemicals, caramelized and gently put to the paper, where a string was added and it was then rolled up into a cylinder about two millimeters wide. The conclusion he came to was that the odd substance was responsible for the funny noise... but what caused the paper to fly out? He read further to find that the noise had another property - pressure. What had happened was a small explosion. He found that there were more types of fireworks and hit upon an idea. "If I could make my own," he said, "then maybe I could make more money." And thus, Thunder's business was born.

Business was slow, but it was manageable. He had been steadily gaining customers due to the good reviews of his poducts. He also found his calling at quite the young age when he set up a mini display for his family - Fire Flower and Storm Chaser, his mother and father, respectively - and listened to their shouts of joy. He went to sleep that night, not knowing that there was now a firecracker emblazoned on his flank... however, he found out in the next few mornings to come that he had gained his cutie mark, and oddly enough, a Junior Pyrotechnician's license as an early birthday present. His mother had gone to Canterlot to fill out the required forms, and within a couple days, a fully legal Junior Pyro License had been granted. This meant that Thunder could legally make and sell everything bigger than party poppers but smaller than bottle rockets - meaning sparklers, small poppits, small fountains, and ground bloom flowers.

This kept him going until he sought out a Fully Certified Pyrotechnician's license when he became a full-fledged stallion. When his application was accepted and his certification earned, he expanded his business to sell every firework under the sun. The gains from this were enough to build the Fireworks Shoppe, a little ways away from Ponyville, where he could test, sell, and make his fireworks. Such a store needed precautions, so he took care to install necessary safety features so as not to blow himself up. And, now, Thunder has his business open again for a bit of the morning and mostly at noon and evening, for the Night of Fire is close at hand.

Cutie Mark: Firecracker

Other than being a little tall (most ponies are between 3' and 4' tall), Thunder Storm's app looks good. Have a look through the RP when you can!

Name (First and last): Talon Davis

Age: 19

Gender: Male

Height (Feet and inches): 6 feet

Weight: 137 lbs

Eye color: Dark Brown, almost black

Hair color: Also nearly black

Occupation: None yet - hopes to get into chemistry or meteorology, probably meteorology for a local news station

Backstory (A little more about your character): Talon Davis was a bit of a... well, you might say a preemie. Born a couple weeks preterm, the doctors predicted a fairly low chance of survival for him. However, through luck, divine intervention, or sheer force of will, Talon beat the odds and went on to shock the community around him. His crawling phase was short - he was up and on his feet in a relatively short space of time. Despite the successes, however, he still had a whole bunch of challenges to overcome. Two of those challenges would be his hardest to beat - Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD. He had trouble sitting still and was naturally inquisitive. Nobody knew, though, that his "disabilities" would turn him from ordinary to extraordinary.

Come the time of his  IQ test at 4 years old, he rocked it. They had to end testing, though, because Talon's skills were too much for it and he was bored. The IQ test registered him as having a shocking IQ of 136 or higher, considering what the doctors said. And the surprises just kept coming. In kindergarten he could draw the United States from memory and completely demolished his US Keys game. He knew the Solar System frontwards, backwards, up and down and side to side. He was interested in all manner of scientific topics and he made a name for himself in the school library as he hawked the science section. Some of his favorite books were on weather and space. One of the few fiction books he was familiar with was a book called "Winnie the Lovesick Dragon", a book about a green female dragon named Winnie. It was one of his favorites by a long shot and, although it's been a while, he still thinks it's at the library.

As time went on, his interest in science only grew. Some of his favorite shows dealt with science, like "Bill Nye the Science Guy". He also liked the PBS show "Nova", a show that (in his opinion) had the coolest intro. Things would be hampered though by a woman who made Talon's life miserable - a woman by the name of Mrs. Tilly. She was known for her... rather harsh treatment of Talon, from grounding him simply for whining to covering his nose and mouth, again for whining. One time she did this, it nearly made him pass out. and knocked his two front teeth loose - teeth he ended up swallowing. Still, it was at this critical time that Talon found a friend to confide in, a friend named Gerald Cage. Gerald has been Talon's closest friend for 12 years - in fact they have been friends ever since Gerald moved from Arizona. Gerald has already applied for college at this point, though, so they might not see much of each other.

Talon grew from his experiences and had quite a few fun times along the way. And by fun experiences, we're talking roller coasters. Lots of them. And I mean lots of them. One of his earliest experiences of a theme park was Six Flags when he was 6 years old. He barely remembers the experience, but he knew that he got to see some of the characters. He went to two more Six Flags theme parks - one called Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in 2013 and Six Flags over St. Louis in 2014 for his senior trip. He also got to go to Disneyland and Disney World, but he had not met any of the characters yet. If he goes to Disney World again... that'll be a different story.

He got to experience his first dive into the wonderful world of Chemistry (oddly enough) in ASD (After School Detention) in the ninth grade as part of a science fair project dealing with the world of the metal salts - compounds often seen in fireworks. To this day he is interested in all things that go boom and, to his knowledge, has been the only student in chem class to be allowed to physically enter the chemicals cabinet, take inventory, and help his chem teacher with experiments. He also bombed his US and Missouri Constitution tests, and when I say bombed, I mean he A-bombed them with 94% and 96% respectively. (Considering the minimum was 70% to pass, that's an achievement).

His Zoology class, despite what he had heard about the class being hard, was actually fairly easy. Then again, his entire senior year was easy. Oftentimes, when homework was given, he had it done on the very same day, let alone the same class period. He did, however, have a mental breakdown of sorts in French. He preferred the French he learned through osmosis rather than through drilling. Despite that, even with all of his good grades in his senior year, he was still a few credits short of graduating. What's a student like him to do when they learn they need more credits? Extra credit classes, of course. He took Earth and Space Science and High School Physics, classes that should have taken at least half the year each, and blew them away in about 2 months. He was doing 3 lessons a day on his less productive days and 6 on his most productive. Then again, when you have Academy Class right after Study Hall and no homework, the extra credit classes seem quite appealing.

He's graduated high school and is hoping to get into college, but due to a potential housing situation, college has been delayed. He keeps up to date, however, with www.spaceweather.com, a site that he can use to monitor the sun's activity. He regularly checks it to see what the sun is doing at any time.

Other distinctive features (if any): Talon is quite skinny. We're talking, REAL skinny. That's not saying he doesn't have muscle, though. He's fairly well built despite his skinny nature and he has a surprising amount of strength, able to rest 260 lbs or even more on his shoulders and support it with his legs, considering he's relatively light. His brain is like a science-absorbing sponge and he can recall facts about space, weather, and chemistry on command. You may also find him watching storms whenever they appear.

Where do they live? (City, state or country): Jefferson City, Missouri, USA

@@Tornadopelt,

I have a number of questions for you regarding Talon.

At the expense of being nitpicky, Talon's a little too thin, given his height. At the lowest, it should be somewhere between 149 and 160 pounds.

I can overlook the unemployed part, but why isn't he in school? Given what he wants to be, he should be in a college or university on a full ride scholarship, given his intelligence...

What's with the IQ test at age four? With a score like that, shouldn't his parents try to find anything other than a regular school? All the rest just seems extraneous and can be removed.

Um, this next paragraph... if you're not going to go into detail about what Mrs. Tilly did, then why bring it up? Again, the rest isn't necessarily relevant, save his friend...

Talon grew from his experiences and had quite a few fun times along the way.

What were those experiences? What did he have fun with?

The next paragraph makes Talon seem like he's an almost exact copy of Thunder Storm. I think it'd be best to give him a different backstory altogether at this point.

One last thing. Men can carry up to twice their weight on average.

What you're looking at is pretty much me IRL. Thunder Storm is meant to represent a sort of "perfect me". The Human OC I made... displays all my physical traits. I basically made me as a character.

I also edited the backstory a bit and fleshed it out more.

For question one - that's my weight IRL.

Question 2 - he graduated but is waiting for college due to potential housing issues.

Question 3 - the IQ test was administered before he went to school, and his mom didn't really have much money.

Question 4 - I didn't want to bring up bad memories, however, for the sake of the backstory, I left them in.

Question 5 - Mostly general things like card games, Mrs. Tilly leaving due to Talon's mom saying enough was enough, that sort of thing.

Question 6 - Thunder Storm is a representation of a PERFECT me, as in a me where I don't have to do all the Hoop-jumping. I actually thought about chemistry, but decided to go for meteorology or space instead.

Bumping the thread yet again to keep it alive...

Anyway, I've been reading a fanfic, and it gave me an idea:

The idea isn't too terribly refined, but Colette inadvertently discovers that she is sensitive to magic -- strong magic in particular. Perhaps a bit of dizziness or something like that?

Despite this, she won't be able to use the magic, so don't worry about that!

Like I said, the idea isn't too fleshed out, so input is greatly appreciated!

@@Hypn0ticD

I'm something of an author myself, so I suppose I can weigh in on the situation . . .

The complication doesn't seem too unbelievable to me, though a good part of my logical mind is asking why Colette is the only one affected by this magic, and not Alex. It's not that I need an exact biological explanation, but fleshing out the problem with more details makes it easier to accept the suspension of disbelief. Certainly, Colette and the other characters don't need to be privy of this information, but I don't believe the RPers themselves need to be kept in dramatic irony.

Another issue I can think of comes from my own experience RPing: roleplays tend to go in whatever direction they darn well please, and unless some plot point is baked into the roleplay itself, it isn't always possible to integrate those points into the roleplay. More often than not, characters will just be caught up, well, talking about menial stuff for several months or something before something significant can happen. Like how we spent a couple trying to get to Sugarcube Corner? It's nothing against this roleplay in particular—it's a side effect of having so many variables weave making a plot: it becomes impossible to micromanage.

Just something to think about if you intend for this plot point to become significant.
