Wait wait wait, some posts in this thread reminded me of the whole mentality I hate: The "objective" mentality. You know, people throwing around the word "objectively" at anything they personally don't agree with. So what if people like AVGN and Nostalgia critic. It doesn't make them objectively terrible people. 

 

Also, "focus on things you like." Um, then there wouldn't be any critics who's you know, job is that.

But it honestly is. There are very much wrong with it.

 

1: I won't even call what they do jokes. They use stuff like "Shit" "Ass" "Penis" Fart". If its target audience is little kids they might score on quality jokes, but thats about it.

2: Like i could put a commentary by Nostalgia Critic over any movie and it would basically have the same effect. And the game commentary when  complaining about something being so hard and cursing and stuff its done for comedic effects and not to be informative. Although some people have called them out for it but they reply with "Well duh, its just for jokes". So i say, well if i make up my own angry character go around and calling every youtuber horrible, is it ok if i say "Well duh its just for jokes". I mean it works the same way. The thing is the game is not so hard as they ham them up to be, as i have tried some myself.

 

So the humor and content in generally is objectively bad. Its just that the target audience existed since 2007 and it hasn't moved much since then, atleast some.

If anything, I'd call Retsupurae the most guilty people in this thread because one of their videos led to an autistic girl getting Death Threats over nothing worse than being a bad LPer and they haven't made any effort to take the video down or curb it that I know of.

 

Diabetus and slowbeef actually stopped doing traditional retsupuraes a while ago when their fans began bullying their targets, most notably BillyMC. Now they do (hilarious) commentaries on archived Long Plays of mediocre to bad games where the player isn't the main attraction, as well as their own Let's Plays.

 

Retsupurae hasn't taken down all of their old videos, though they removed some that had prompted vitriol toward certain players. They've also honored the requests of players who had asked that Retsupuraes of their videos be removed.

Other uses that are huge fans of the, and that they aware are out there en-mass and yet still continue to use their stage in an irresponsible fashion. They also proudly call the forum that created the aforementioned hell-dump their home.

Exactly. Its the lack of quality control which is why it exists on the net. If this was on TV it wouldn't be showned. Its because people there are more professional on what they expose the public too. So you are right in general.

It's a good thing that there is no such thing as quality control on the internet for if we relied completely on television we would lack many things the internet has brought us. As well big time professionals aren't completely aware of what people would like. That's where internet content producers come in, and other groups in similar position being indie game developers. True, there will be a large amount of unpopular or largely unknown content, but those who do gain much attention and popularity must be doing something right.

 

 Except that he was basically saying that people were wrong for liking AVGN's style of humor. Nothing about camera quality, sound, and the like.

There is no such thing as objectively better humour; it's all dependent on preference. Whether you laugh only at jokes that involved much planning and close attention to detail or are amused simply by someone who passes gas, no form of humour is better than another.

While that's true and it's my fault for not bringing it up, they still haven't made any efforts I'm aware to reach out to people like QueenieZ and make it right. They also took a hell of a long time to stop doing the MST videos that lead to the attacks.

 

There's still the whole affiliation with SA as well.

"Pick on". Those are the keywords. They arent criticizing their work or trying to help the person get better, they are just trying to get rid of that person, by any means necessary. How DARE you try to justify their actions. You are suppose to criticize the CONTENT, not the person.

 

Good: "This isnt very good, you glossed over very good scenes in the movie in order to make your point.You should have done more research."

 

Bad: "Oh my god, you dumbass, you are a horrible videomaker just stop making videos and kill yourself."

Dude, please. For the love of all that is good in this world, stop acting like your opinion is an objective fact. You feeling strongly about it doesn't change that. 

 

You can give your reasons for not thinking something is funny. That's fine! But the minute you start telling people that they're sense of humor is literally incorrect because it doesn't line up with your own, you're going to make people mad and this thread is just going to get locked like the last one.

This is starting to feel like that time we had a user that insisted on defending Howard Stern to the death for pages on end.

 

Who? Oh yeah that guy! Well I certainly don't agree with him but I don't think the guy should be killed or personally attacked.

 

In contrast to my earlier sentiment, that's when I knew the perpetrator had driven people to suicided and essentially danced on their grave. As far as I know, Howard Stern hasn't gone that far, merely expressing an opinion. A scathing, ludicrous opinion, but one that clearly has not effected anyone too badly.

I will rather say NC and AVGN have more of that glory problem than Retsupurae and Somethingawful, i think they are doing the internet a favor by calling out the stuff that people glorify, its not like Retsupurae are glorified, they just exist. And people who are rational don't follow the crowd and think individually.

The man is so humble and socially awkward that he's had problems with other staff using him a door-mat and his friends had to break him constantly apologizing and being a yes-man to everyone. He also manages to run several shows despite being dyslexic.

Anyway, again. One of the things I like about the Nostalgia Critic is, as scathing his reviews can be, he makes it clear that it comes from a place of love for the medium, often citing other great films that did what the reviewed movie is trying to do but better, and doesn't hold people as bad for liking the movie if they do.

 

Yes, he makes jokes like "this all opinion based . . . but I have a web show so that makes my opinion better than yours." His tone and the context clearly shows that's not his true intent but a self parody. In fact, the Critic has never been one to shy away from putting himself on the line. the character is pitiable in a lot of ways and frequently the target of slapstick. It's that kind of humility and willing to show weakness that keeps him sympathetic.

Even as I watch the site go down the crapper and 80% of the staff become assholes, I'll defend certain people like Lewis, Doug, and Brad Jones to the death because they've remained decent people in the face of all the drama.

The Res. people (tired of trying to spell it) knowingly made extremely toxic and insulting commentary that courted that kind of following, and then took years of their fans abusing people to start doing something about it.

No, I'm not, if the uploader did something questionable, say they made a mistake in a game review or something, and failed the game as a result, then yes, it should be called out, but not by saying, "Wow, this is so bad, you should kill yourself, I can't believe you made it."

Criticizing a company for shoddy work is totally fine. It's the companies fault for doing a bad job. Attacking the developers on a personal level and giving them death threats is not fine. It is the responsibility of whoever is issuing those attacks to not be assholes, not the developers fault for being personally attacked.

There was one review I liked that was about Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. Which I loved as a kid, but the Critic did make some major points. I still like that the movie tries to put more emphasis on the Rangers as characters but the problem is the only ones with any kind of chemistry and interesting traits were Tommy, Jason, and Kimberlee, and two of them were no longer Rangers! Plus Billy Jr. or whatever the kid's name was which was a shameless appeal to the younger audience . . . THAT WAS ALREADY GOING TO WATCH!

 

At the end though, the NC acknowledged that he didn't like it, that it wasn't for him, but that didn't mean Power Rangers wasn't special to its fans like me . . . and Linkara. (Even comparing it to his love for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Which was actually another good review for a movie that was overall inconsequential but had it's moments. Dat' elevator scene.  )
