Civilization 5 MLP Mods

Recently I've been fixated on the grand strategy game Civilization 5, trying my best to play it and pretend I'm the next Alexander the Great in between various projects. Those of you who have played the game likely are aware it and Steam very much facilitate player-made mods (those of you who are unaware, a 'mod', or modification, is an addition and/or change to the game; new buildings, tweaked game mechanics/rules, etc). Mods really do enhance the game if chosen properly (and there are so many: I've spent hours and hours merely selecting the best mods before even getting to playing it!), so I rely on them extensively.

I was surprised and disappointed there were no furry mods. However, there are actually a series of MLP mods, introducing several pony civilizations and their related special traits and units. And, surprisingly, most had 4+ stars (I figured enough would have down-voted brony mods to make them 3-Star). Anyone who has both expansions actually use these? If so, how well did they work, and were the civs overpowered?

I've got all the MLP mods I can find. They all work wonderfully, except The Crystal Empire civ is a bit overpowered. Their growth is astounding. In the beginning of a game where all other civs have 3 population in their capital, The Crystal Empire will have like 6 from most of my experiences.

Oh, geez, 6 versus the average of 3? Yeah, that's quite a difference in science (9 versus 6 science, IIRC), and possibly also production or gold. If they maintain that advantage rather than plateau, they're going to trounce everyone else.

Ah yes, I have noticed the MLP mods, I have quite a few on my Steam ;). They are fun to play, especially when you convert everything to pony (the tech images and unit icons <3).

The civs are a bit exploitable, I think the Luna civ can be a bit exploitable as well as the Celestia one if played right. However, I think the Changeling one is pretty balanced

I actually think the Changeling civ is underpowered. Every game I play, they get destroyed and are always the first civ to go.

or maybe they are balanced and it's because the other civs are overpowered

Well, as an AI, I have noticed that they suck, yes. However, as a playable nation, they are pretty balanced.

How have I never heard of this before! I really need to figure out how to put mods in my games.

Go to your Steam library, click on Civ 5, on the right side of the page scroll downwards until you see "Steam Workshop," click the "Browse the Workshop" button, find a mod you like, click the green "Subscribe" button next to it.

Then launch Civ 5 and on the Main Menu click "Mods." Make sure all the mods you've subscribed to are enabled by checking the green tick button next to the mods on the list, click next and voila.

However, if you're on Mac, this process will be a lot more complicated.

Thank you! I almost never play games on my PC but now I think I will start. :D

No surprise here really since a lot of Bronies are also gamers and some of them have made mods for their favourite games. Anyone remember the mod for Skyrim which replaces the dragons with massive ponies?

Do the mods I've alluded to also change the icons, or does one have to do something far more complicated to achieve that?

Well, as an AI, I have noticed that they suck, yes. However, as a playable nation, they are pretty balanced.

The AI in general seems lacking. Their prioritizations and military tactics are especially poor. I think what the higher difficulty levels actually do are give them special resource bonuses, so they end up building units and buildings much more rapidly and thus make up for their poor selection processes. I just played the game without any AI mods (I have no idea why it seems so few players use one), and after the Industrial Era I far exceeded every other player in every aspect. Also, my invasions weren't very heavily resisted despite them not at all being awestrikingly rapid blitzkrieg affairs, and they often just ignored units which were either close to destruction or the most threatening to the cities. The Mongols did manage to recapture the capitol, but the other enemy took it for themselves immediately afterwards. I guess a pile of rubble is more appealing than nothing at all.

Mods can really add to the pleasure derived from the game. Many of them honestly are extremely excessive (one for example added almost 100 air units), but some add the right number of units/buildings and give them appropriate effects. Others rebalance the stats of units or buildings, or the mechanics in general. I'm about to add the 'omnibus' one by someone named TheCrazyScotsman that does all of the above, which will also allow me to deactivate all of the component mods I've installed.

I've only heard of Skyrim, but, that certainly sounds entertaining.

You just need one mod for that I can't remember what the name of the mod is exactly now

The AI is always pretty lacking when it comes to mods since the mods are not really game approved (the game does not fully recognize them). The mod civs seem to have mixed abilities, that confuses the computer, so it doesn't know what kind of a strategy it is supposed to play

No, no, I meant the company developer-made AI. I am going to start a new game with the AI mod I use activated, but, it seemed the last time I played on Emperor with it on, the AI was far more threatening and robust than with the unmodded AI.

You mean that? For me, the AI works quite well, they don't make the stupid decisions as they sometimes make. But then again, they pretty much stopped patching up the game a while ago.

I've probably found the mod you alluded to. The one specifically to ponify units for pony civs from certain mods is called, of course, Pony Units. The one that ponifies EVERYTHING (I mean, EVERYTHING, even for non-pony civs) is called, naturally, Ponification.

After perusing the brony mods more carefully, I see that some of them are REALLY popular. Someone made a Celestia/Equestria mod with two versions, and the one for vanilla has well over 2k ratings, and the one for the expansions has almost 1k. Others by the same one had 800+ ratings. These are all 4-star mods, which I think means around 80% of the ratings were positive.

I played a game with the Ponification and the Celestia and Luna ones. The three things I found remarkable were: 1.) The Huns were next to me and decided not to bother with a military and go for science. 2.) Luna and Celestia's civs were the indisputed leaders of science, but Luna especially had a low overall score. 3.) Celestia asked me if I'd join her in taking out Luna. I found that dismaying and amusing at the same time.

This sounds like an amazing thing to do to my game, I'm buying Civilization 5 and all DLC right now just for this mod! Many people have recommended it to me, so I think I'll get it now.

Well, now I know that I should definitely get Steam! I've wanted too, mainly for this game and Roller Coaster Tycoon, but now I know I need to get it! Also, I just realized that there are probably mods for RCT. I hope there's an MLP one.

There are two types of pony mods: the Ponification one (which makes most icons that of ponies, changes a few unit names, and I believe gives compatible pony civilization mods pony unit animations), and the civilization ones. I have both installed, but I more or less forget about the Ponification one. I become so engrossed in empire management and tend not to be aggressively militaristic (yes, I know, very out of character for me), and thus don't see the pony animations and I don't much react to the ponified icons for techs and such. But, I'm sure other bronies will find that one more delightful.

Usually I have the ones for Celestia and Luna active, but I noticed the pony leaders behave in ways very much unlike their show counterparts. If you have a differing ideology or are friends with an enemy you're on their shit list generally. They also seem quite prone to wanting to go to war with each other.
