Horrible and funny idea - imagine that Rarity's boutiques become so successful that she can't keep up with demand, so she outsources her manufacturing to the impoverished Griffon empire, and in another episode we see Gilda sewing Princess Dresses in a sweat shop.

WE WANTED A MORE REALISTIC PONY SHOW, WE GOT IT!  Lol.

There was no reason for her even existing, its not like we haven't had overweight ponies before, and those were handled way more tastefully than her design was. She wasn't just fat, she was grotesque, and clearly made to be a gag, and not even a mildly funny one I might add.

I agree fully. The puppeteer done in season 4 was a good example of overweight ponies done right. If I didn't know better, I would call this blue thing something that someone would draw if they wanted to mock MLP. Worst design in the show. I think that they should consider striking it from canon and that is not something said lightly.

it was great to see achieving her dream of a boutique, even if it was just for a while. She may not have a boutique in Canterlot anymore, but she's got an employee, so that's just alright.

Fatty pony FTW

I thought it was implied that she still has the boutique?

She said she always intended for Ponyville to be her home base, meaning nothing about her plan has really changed.

She still owns both boutiques, and will check up on the Canterlot one every now and then to hand in new designs and greet the customers.

Sassy is still the manager, while Rarity is the owner/boss.

I would think so too. It's interesting you mentioned Starlight Glimmer because it occurs to me this cutie mark is the antithesis of what her philosophy was - everypony fitting in as an anonymous cog in a machine. Here we have this rotund pony who's cutie mark is the ultimate expression of individualism - her special talent is herself!

Dang, now I kind of want to have an episode that follows up on this pony, if for nothing else just to answer what her cutie mark is really all about... Plus it might give DHX an opportunity to defuse the situation they've created by throwing her in at the end as a joke and causing a controversy. It also might be nice to know why Rainbow Dash had a picture of her in her locker - if she's some kind of celebrity that would go a long way to explaining all three issues.

I think that was just a random locker Rainbow Dash hid in, not her own locker. The obese pony could still be a celebrity though which might explain the star on the cutie mark. I would LOVE an episode that follows up on her and her life!!! GREAT IDEA!!!

Well, another righteous reward for surviving this lesser pony drought. That was a pretty decent episode. It's nice to see Rarity getting quite some episodes for herself after being negated the first whole half of the season. And it was great to see achieving her dream of a boutique, even if it was just for a while. But the dresses she made are gorgeous nonetheless (even if the business didn't turn out as she had hoped). Yeah, the twist in Sassy Saddles' character feels a bit forced, but was an alright addition. Kinda adds more perspective to her, but it was truly sweet from Rares to not fire Sassy despite having full reason to. She truly is the element of generosity after all. She may not have a boutique in Canterlot anymore, but she's got an employee, so that's just alright.

Fatty pony FTW

Rarity still owns the boutique! She didn't give it to Sassy! I hope she goes to the Canterlot boutique in future episodes, and maybe invites Coco Pumel there.

You know, that's actually a good point. I rewatched the episode last night and realized they aren't laughing at her, they're just giggling cause they're so done with the princess dress. Thanks for posting your opinion in a polite and respectful way, it really made me rethink this!

You're very welcome!!! Exactly! Thank you so much for keeping an open mind as I don't think DHX would make such an immature joke nor want to offend anyone especially after the Derpy incident. In my humble opinion people need to be careful about how much they complain about something being offensive because eventually the concern might be disregarded when it is truly offensive. Sort of like a "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" effect. As a person with Cerebral Palsy who gets stared at I have learned there are appropriate and inappropriate times to be offended and intent of the person MUST be taken into account i.e I don't think a toddler stares at me to bully me, they do it because they are curious. I would love to see further character development of the obese pony like we saw for Bulk Biceps. I'd like her to have an official name too.

It was a nice message and good growth for Rarity to get her dream. (even though i still say the nobels are all sheep) at least the regular citizens are free minded.

PInkie this episode, idk I didn't find her all that funny more slightly borderline annoying or oblivious.

The song..eh good background rythem although not something i'd listen to again but that's just me.

Overall a great Rarity episode. well worth the wait.

I'm not totally sure if this is the correct place to post this, but....

I'm curious about how fan names for background ponies become canon.  Do the writers tend to look here, or at Equestria Daily, or a combo of places?

I've seen names floating around for Goth Pony and the random pony at the end of the episode, so it got me thinking about this topic.

Well, thank you! And you're right - I haven't watched that episode in a few weeks and forgot it wasn't necessarily Rainbow's locker - darn. Because it makes sense now for her to have that photo if that pony really is a motivational speaker.

I feel like we'd had this kind of episode before though... one where Rarity gets super stressed... etc.

Also what even was that at the end... I still have no idea...

we've never had a Rairity pisode where she sacrifices her passion for sticking to trends, with every dress lacking uniqueness

No offense but Rarity said she hired one of the best but when rarity confronts sassy she says "I cant fail at another boutique!" or something of that nature. When "The best" has failed multiple jobs, thats not too good lol

I found this episode to be most excellent. Rarity's character arc continuity and progression was nice to see. The variety in the new characters was great, too; different body shapes and personalities. I love that fabulous goth pony! Then there was the wonderful dresses...

"Rules of Rarity" is an absolutely wonderful song. I love the rhymes and the unique pacing, varied instrumental, and well-versed singing. As it progresses, you can feel and relate to Rarity's sense of creative struggle. It's my favorite part of the episode  :rarity: . Other than that, I don't have much else to say. The song itself makes it worth watching.
