does my oc have to be a pony?

I am new to the Brony community but have been a fan of the show for a long time alone with loving the show I have long wanted to create my own oc but I don't in all honest think a pony best describes who I am as a person so I got to thinking what else could I use. when it comes to the show most pet are like that's of cats, dogs, birds ect but we have also seen that they in a sense are not typical animals most show signs of intelligence as well as personality, the same goes for wild animals such as the ones Fluttershy cares for,

 so my question is could an oc have to be an earth, Pegasus or unicorn heck even an alicorn?

Your OC can really be whatever you want it to be. As long as you make it clear that it is a part of the MLP universe, and make it look appropriately fitting. I drew my OC, a redesign of the show's Diamond Dogs, in the MLP show style to make it clear that it is a part of that universe without it having to be a pony:

 

 

Also, there is another OC I designed from a species that isn't even in the show. A chamrosh for my fiance, @@Lunaris Adamantine, . (a mythological creature that's part bird and part dog, kind of like a griffon) I also made sure to make it look fitting:

 

 

Basically, the sky's the limit. Though I doubt most people will pull that off well and there are certain things I myself don't approve of, you can really do whatever you like for fan creativity. It's not like there's any pressure of being published in a book or anything. It's all just for fun.

If you are looking for an OC that is not part of the "big 3" races, there are a lot of options that are not too uncommon.

I have seen a pretty good number of bat ponies, zebras, a few griffons, a few diamond dogs (lookin at you, @@Arylett Charnoa!), and also hybrids (i.e. zebra-pony)

In my experience I would stay away from alicorns- there is a pretty strong stigma since they are like the "god" characters in the show.

Of course I would echo arylett's sentiment that you certainly have creative freedom, and there are a few examples of semi-famous bronies with nontraditional OCs (Dr. Wolf- Wolf) (Silver Quill- Hippogriff (which is not a griffon!))

Your OC can be whatever you want it to be and can have as much intelligence as you want. That is the glory of making our own characters, we can make them however we want. :3 Pony, Gryphon, A snail, anything goes really on what you want your character to be like.

Not really. As long is its recognisable as something from the shows universe. The style per-se doesn't matter. My own OC av atm isn't drawn in the gen4 style XD

 

Also, your OC can be any mythological creature really because chances are if its not in the show now, it may appear later down the line. To give an example. Ahuizotl, Daring's do's nemesis, is a creature from Aztec mythology.

 

as for known non pony OC's you have dragons, zebra, gryphons, chimeras, sea serpents, hydras, Horses, Buffalo, Changlings. Minotuars and Bulls/Cows.

 

To be honest, as a rule. If your expecting your OC to be able to talk with other ponies. Don't make him a T-Rex for something likely to make them shit themselves in terror. Pick something that can atleast visit ponyville without leaving it a crater XD

In which case, a human oc probably wouldn't be too good of an idea. Although, I could use a similar humanoid creature, such as an elf from Scandinavian mythology.

To be honest, I think your OC will see more success if it isn't a pony, but is another of the "sapient" races. After all, is there anything more beautiful and desirable than rarity?

 

The sapient races would be:

• Pony
• Zebra
• Griffon
• Donkey
• Mule
• Buffalo
• Cow
• Dragon
• Changeling
• Many other things

In addition, you could try your hand at designing a deer! They haven't shown up in the show that I'm aware of, though they're present in the comic.

 

I've been considering changing Lucky Shot to something else myself. I'd probably go deer. Deer have nice butts.

There really is no point in me repeating what everyone else has already said, but it's good emphasis. Your OC does not have to be a pony. I would even suggest, if you want your OC to be noticed by more people, going with something that isn't a pony would make it much easier. I've even thought about making an antelope OC just to have something rarely seen!

They can be anything you want them to be! This is your oc. They could be a griffon,

a changeling or even a crystal pony! Make it as unique as you want it to be.

OC merely stands for 'Original Character'. Meaning, as long as you came up with it, it can be whatever you want it to be. However, be warned that if you intend to roleplay with your character on this site, making it at least believable is recommended. You can be the sister of Fausticorn and the the time-traveling lady who has Discord as her son, or the space octopus that likes to disintegrate things in the name of science, but have fun getting any DMs to accept it...

 

But, at the end of the day, it's your OC. Make it your way.

Nah! You could make an OC of anything in the pony world! A griffon, a diamond dog, a dragon, etc. Good luck!
