The Progressive Music Thread!

MVC NVMXD JVRXD

First off, Rush because Rush is best progressive rock band. Kicking ass since '67 (Yes, they formed in 1967, but it took a few years for the to release their first album).

Now for progressive metal. I prefer the more modern progressive metal. I still do enjoy some "older fashioned" progressive metal like Symphony X, Dream Theater, and Ayreon and all, but more modern prog just appeals to me more, especially when it djents.

Like Chimp Spanner, Periphery, Animals as Leaders. Definitely not your grandfather's progressive music.

Ayreon is more progressive than anything posted here so far:

I was waiting for you to post Ayreon :P

I'm almost done torrenting Opeth's discography. Don't judge me, the closest record store from my house sucks. They didn't have any metal, it was all rap and jazz :(

Glad to know my love of Ayreon is known :)

Also, Kamelot is pretty damn good. Love Epica/Black Halo. Ironically, I first found out about Kamelot when reading about Epica (the band), and how they thought Epica (the Kamelot album) was so cool they renamed their band after it.

They like Epica, huh? So do I.

That means I'll have to check 'em out. Thanks bruddah.

On that note, some Epica. They're a symphonic progressive band.

Female operatic vocals <3

Edit: This thread should be renamed "Evilshy's Progressive Thread" considering how much he loves the stuff ;)

Correction: Rush is best band ever. Period.

And since Rush was mentioned again, I feel the need to post more Rush.

Lol @ Rush being the greatest band ever. Obviously Death is the greatest band ever, Chuck is probably the greatest metal guitarist ever. *Ultra Death fanboy mode activated* Edited by Neighvana666

Lol @ the fact that you're comparing Rush to Death when they aren't even the same genre. Rush isn't metal, you can't compare them to a metal band, smart one.

Well, they're both progressive. But yea I guess you're right. A better comparison would be Death and Dream Theater. Chuck Shuldiner had prog band, I forgot what it was called. I think it was called Control Denied or Voodoocult.

I'd be okay with that.

Presto Ballet, anyone? I admit, I haven't listened to them much, but they were opening for Dream Theater a few years ago, so I looked them up, and they're pretty good.

Also, some quintessential King Crimson:

Death and Dream Theater is just about as inaccurate of a comparison as Death and Rush was, completely different styles of metal,  they're 100 miles away from being similar to each other

And also leaving another Rush song, since why not?

But they're both progressive. Death's later stuff is progressive death metal. What do you think would be a fair comparison?

I just finished downloading Opeth's discography /)^3^(\

Well Dream Theater are a Progressive Metal band, they are so far away from being a Progressive Death Metal band, compare Death to another Progressive Death Metal band, that would make the most sense to me.

Like what, Opeth and Necrophagist? BTW, which Opeth albums should I listen to, I have everything by them up to The Roundhouse Tape.

Well most people would say to start out with Blackwater Park since that album has most of the songs that people know by them. Either that one or Ghost Reveries I'd say would be good starters.

One of my favorite bands is/has been Periphery. Probably the most controversial band in metal at the moment, some worshipping them as the gods of a new age in metal (mainly progressive) while other see them as high-voiced, watered-down Meshuggah copying posers.

I for one think it's great how they can bring a certain level of heavy technicality to a more mainstream crowd than other bands have.

Their first album was superior in terms of technicality and tone, but their second album was really good as well. Massively improved vocals and a totally different sound.

I love Periphery as well, at least from what I've heard by them, I plan on getting their first and second albums sometime, and I seriously don't care if they're just a watered down version of Meshuggah, Periphery sound good to my ears and that's all that matters to me.

Alright then, Blackwater Park it is. I also had Orchid in mind.huh.png I think I'm just going to flip a coin. If I get heads I'll listen to Orchid and if I get tails I listen to Blackwater Park.

And I just fliped a coin, and it's heads. I'm going to listen Orchid now.tongue.png

Awwwwww yeah! One of my all time favorite Yes songs.

A classic from "The Yes Album". That album and "Close to the Edge" are amazing and great examples of how unique prog rock can be. Anyone interested in the band (and some crazy awesome music) should check out "Close to the Edge", "The Yes Album", "Tales from Topographic Oceans", "Relayer", and "Fragile".

Admit it, you like progressive metal. And what's wrong with being an egghead? Eggheads are intelligent and do awesome things. Like SCIENCE. And make computers and video games and movies. Basically, all of our entertainment is made by eggheads smile.png

So, Quo Vadis:

And probably my favorite Opeth song:
