The Progressive Music Thread!

Not sure if it counts as progressive rock but whatever. Thanks for posting!

Also, thanks for posting Camel's song on the previous page. Someone I was acquainted with many years ago on another forum was enamored with them and so it was informative to hear more of their music. s'not too bad.

Since Steely Dan's style is Jazz Rock, it fits in the prog genre, since it's a subgenre. ^_^

And I'm glad you liked Camel! I will post more from them in the future - but for now I'm on my iPod lol.

Two more Peter Gabriel-era Genesis songs. My reasoning? Peter Gabriel-era Genesis is the shizz.

How was this song not posted yet? The middle rocks harder than anything the band ever did, except maybe "The Knife". Also, lovely organ from 8:34-9:22

Tony Banks' keyboard in all its majestic glory. Phil Collins drumming like a bloody octopus. This is why "Selling England By The Pound" is one of my favorite albums ever.

FUN FACT: the movement from 10:06 - 10:30 is what inspired the main melody of "Turn It On Again". Hum it during this part and it fits like a glove.

Are we allowed to post progressive metal?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8atiEPs0bQ

Since Porcupine Tree has gotten alot of love here, Opeth should be included since they're basically Porcupine Tree's "brother band". This is one of their proggiest and most majestic songs (ft. Steven Wilson on vocals)

Arcturus is a pretty experimental metal band. The long, arctic trek in the middle part of the song is breathtaking.

Omg, I love those two albums, quite a fine taste You have. Garm's vocals really shine on The Sham Mirrors. But somehow my favourite song is Star Crossed with that beautiful intro :3

An underrated gem off of Fly By Night

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UU62UcP_BA

Have you heard the version of By-Tor and the Snow Dog from the live CD "All The World's A Stage?"

It's like a million times better than the studio version. I pretty much can't listen to any other version other than that one cause all the other versions suck in comparison lol

This thread really should be renamed "GP's Rush Thread"

Maybe! xD Or maybe... GP's Prog Rock Rush :P

And I was waiting for this song, subdivision. It's my favorite!

I don't know if you are going to like this, but it's the first prog group I found three years ago:

Saw them live in November 2011. ^_^

So March 1st is the big 40th Anniversery. What's everyone plans?

Maybe I'll listen to some Rush with my father lol. Edited by GhostPony750

Personally, I'm not a huge Rush fan. But I know alot of people are, so I...erm, tend to keep my mouth shut regarding that.

I'm not a fan of Neil Peart's lyrical prose and I'm not a fan of Geddy Lee's voice. I have nothing against high-pitched male singing. I like Claudio Sanchez and Jonas Bjerre's singing. It's just Geddy doesn't sing all that well, to me.

I definitely think they have talent though and it's easy to see why so many people who aren't me like them.

Maudlin Of The Well. Startlingly excellent and terrifying, like Dante staring at the nightmare that is Dis. Very much "progressive" music but not in the 1970s sense of the term. Psychedelic-avantgarde-classical-alternative-death metal. Their arrangements, melodies, etc. are so bizarre, so alien compared to what you often hear in contemporary music it's in itself worth reflecting on. It's closer to John Zorn than Rush. Robert Fripp of King Crimson would like them, though.

And yes, they have a ProgArchives entry. Listen to the entirety of "Bath" and "Leaving Your Body Map".

This thread suffers from a problem: a clear, universal definiton of progressive rock has not been supplied.

I will now attempt one:

Progressive Rock is a type of music in which instruments used to play rock n' roll (guitars, bass, drums, keyboards) are used to create arrangements influenced by the following external genres: classical and romantic music, jazz and avant-grade composition.

Is that good enough? :D

Not sure... As another feature of progressive rock (although obviously not always done by bands considered Progressive) is implementing/featuring musical instruments not common to rock music, like woodwinds/brass, strings, or Eastern and ancient/traditional instruments.

In general it's just a hard "genre" to define as there are so many kinds and meanings.
