This morning, I was in Spanish class. We were learning to count to 100 in Spanish. The number 15 in Spanish was ''Quince'', and it's pronounced ''keen-say''. Our teacher told us that there's such thing as a party when a girl turns 15, called a quincenera, or however your spell it. Quincenera? That word sounds familiar.

Oh yea! It was in MLP! Diamond Tiara had one!

So fillies are older than we think they are? Those fillies are teenagers? How interesting. What are your thoughts on this? Do you still think DT is about eight or twelve?

I think it was a cutecenera (to mark that she got her cutie mark). I don't think getting a cutie mark is strictly bound to age. She could as well just be 10-12 .

Honestly, I think it was done just for the sake of the pun.

Or more directly..

MLP has cute-ceñera.

Mexico has quinceañera, or quince años, or a handful of other names.

Like I said, I think it's just used for the pun, as it was the closest thing they could get to a cultural-sounding coming of age celebration that 'cute' (from cutiemark) could be wedged into. Either way, it no longer seems to have any connection to the 15 year old bit, as quince is now entirely absent.

Though, -anera probably still owes it's roots to the Spanish word for year, año, so it may literally be something closer to "cute year celebration"? Or, the year of your cutie mark. Dunno about that part. 

Either way, it went from seeming to be literally named after "15 years" to cute "years" or something similar. I think the altered ending is probably important, but I don't know enough about Spanish to evaluate that. 

 

 

 

But yeah, I still think they're really young.

It's a cuteceñera, not a quinceañera. Since "quince" means 15 and is not in the word "cuteceñera", this can't mean Diamond Tiara is 15 at all. The word cuteceñera is simply just wordplay, nothing else.

@@gamecubeguy214, good connection between the celebrations, but I think you tried to push the two together a little too much.  No shame in that though.

 

A lot of the names from the show already come from real things--they're just then made into puns.  :grin2: Like how Philadelphia is supposed to mean something like "brotherly love", but when you sacrifice that for the sake of a pun... well, I don't think Fillydelphia is the same thing, haha. Now it's closer to "filly brother." 

Same bit for quinceanera. I think the meaning is lost.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I see.  Well, let's get this out of the way before we go on. DT is a Dahlia Hawthorne in the making. And if you know who Dahlia Hawthorne is, YOU KNOW YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE A KID TURN INTO A DAHLIA HAWTHORNE! Anyways, I wonder what that means for the CMC, After all, they are taking the same classes as DT, But then again, DT got her's for her Cutie Mark. SO age may not play in this. But I would like it if the CMC were teens around my age Not for any creepy reason, though. I am gay after all.

Well, just to point it out. Diamond Tiara goes to Canterlot High in the human realm. The Mane Six are considerably older than her, and are in their senior year. So, it's safe to assume Diamond Tiara is a freshman. Freshman are usually around 14 or 15 years old.

 

Minor detail. But then again, the pony versions seem to age faster than their human counterparts. I don't know, really, I just felt compelled to point out that irrelevant bit.

Well, it would make sense that she and, presumably, the CMC, are roughly 15-16 if you look at Equestria girls, considering they're in high school with the Mane 6. However, that's not enough in my opinion. There are far too many variables to assume that a pony's age in Equestria would be the same in the human world. I don't believe there is enough evidence within the canon of the show to assimilate quincenera with "cutecenera", as some people have already mentioned above. Both celebrations are a "coming of age". While one is related to turning a certain age, the other may happen right when the pony gets their mark (it's unclear if cutecenaras are thrown for both colts and fillies, or if the one for colts goes by a different name). That being said, a cutecenara is most likely not contingent upon a pony's age.

Nothing about the name cute-ceanera indicates it takes place at fifteen. It just implies it happens when a pony gets her cutie mark.

 

I mean, it could happen when a pony is fifteen. We don't even know how fast ponies age. But it just doesn't seem to have anything to do with that age.

The pony term "cutecenara" is definitely derived from the South American term "quincenara", but I don't think this indicates Diamond Tiara and the other fillies are around 15. I get the impression they're closer to 12 or 13.

This, pretty much. Both are coming-of-age things, but one has to do with a specific age ('cause that's what the name means) while the other does not.

 

EDIT: I suppose coming-of-age is a little contradictory to what I'm saying. I was just trying to say ShadOBabe is correct without repeating what she said.

Yes they celebrate coming of age what's your point? Since there is no measure of what age they reach maturity the only lead is the cutecenera being a correlation of the quincenara. Quince meaning 15
