I was attending my global history class and we got the roman empire, me and my teacher have actually debating in class about it aswell. (Scores 3-2 if you wanted to know) so today we got to watch ancient Rome the movie, which over Neros rein. I was asleep through the first half, but I tuned in just before the assassination attempt....

God, I should've stayed asleep, the way he killed all them. In public, no excuses and no escapes either. Then he threw an art festival and starred in it while Rome was nearly backrupt?! Back then, Actors weren't what the are now, back then was in social status just, just above a beggar. So this was like Queen Elizabeth mud wrestling. After words he literally killed his wife infront of his servants because she mentioned how he dropped one prop. He kicked her to death and killed their heir aswell.

He then went on tour with his act, in a poor attempt to earn money. While there he made a plan to force all the wealthy to put everything they Had in their will to him and then kill them. Not a moment later, he executed this plan, and it was bloody.... He even turned one of them into a women and watched them do it aswell. They then got enough sense to rebel against him, and force to commit suicide. He called himself a god, but I disagree with every part of me to even speak those words.

He in my opinion may be one of the worst people on the history of humanity. Did he do good? Or did he doors bad stuff that I forgot to mention? What's your opinion of him?

TL;DR? I think Nero is horrible what do you think?

I know little to nothing about Nero, and based on what information is given to us, I have to ask - is this a question about morality or not?

It depends on how you interpret it but otherwise to my viewpoint, it is not, but I can easily see how it could be.

I don't know Nero, so I did some very very basic Wikipedia research. Apparently he was horrible morally, yet very savvy from the Machiavellian viewpoint, by eliminating his rivals very efficiently and exploiting populism.

Sounds like he'd make a real run for the presidency, were he alive.

If Nero saw that then our entire timeline would change, so many things would go wrong from Nero going right, We'd have to get Docter Wooves in here to explain it all!

Which one? We have like 8 docs on these forums alone

Nero became emperor at a rather young age, if I recall correctly. He was fairly competent at the beginning of his reign, but being inside the imperial bubble really led him to indulge in destructive, bizarre, and murderous behavior. Of course, he is also remembered for instigating the first major empire wide persecution of Christians. Legend has it that St. Paul was beheaded outside of Rome during the rule of Nero.

The whole situation reminds me of I, Claudius (a novel which then became a mini-series produced by the BBC) when Caligula brought an older and slightly more demented Tiberius pornographic scrolls. You could become isolated rather quickly, and that often resulted in a lost grip on reality.

Caligula also had a thing for his sister, if Suetonius's account is correct.

Caligula was a regular freakshow! That is if the historical accounts are correct. I advise everyone to STAY AWAY from the movie. I watched it once, and that was enough! I got the DVD used for a dollar, otherwise I never would have bought it! My husband gave it to a buddy of his, because I never ever want to see it again!

Yeah Nero, he was pretty evil. I reckon he wasn't as bad as Gaius (Caligula) though. And there were others, like Crassius too. Caligula was a total monster of Rome though, invading the sea, making a horse a consul, sleeping with both his sisters, laughing at the thought of killing senators in front of them and declaring himselfs the god Joves brother? Not to mention all the killing he did, sometimes his own family no less...

Yeah, that screams of evilness and insanity to me. Theres a reason he was killed by his own praetorian guards.

Maybe Caligula was worse, I'd he did all that.

Making a horse consul and sleeping with his sisters?! God no!

And thats a start on Caligulas crimes, he killed an audience at a game once because he grew tired and turned the palace into a brothel... he was a bad person. Course, we don't REALLY know how much of this is true. On the other hand, he built a temple-boat with marble flooring and plumbing. Plus he claimed to have found a recently killed ten foot man while he was riding a horse to an island on a bridge of ships once. So... make of that what you will.

Nero watched Rome fall and did nothing but make it worse. He murdered his brother, slept with his mother and generally screwed up everything.

Nero was the one the first to persecute Christians, he did this very brutally and constantly. He used the burning bodies as a light source for his mansion.

It was said by Suetonius and Cassius Dio that Nero sang the "Sack of IIum" in stage costume while the city burned. Popular legend claims that Nero played the fiddle at the time of the fire, an anachrism based merely on the concept of the lyre, a stringed instrument associated with Nero and his performances. (There were no fiddles in 1st-century Rome.) Tacitus's account, however, has Nero in Antium at the time of the fire.Tacitus also said that Nero playing his lyre and singing while the city burned was only rumor.

Well the rest of the world was becoming mad at nero for his crimes and itallian senate sentenced him to death. after hearing of this Nero promptly killed himself outside of Rome.

Umm yeah sorry I tend to go on history rants sometimes... uhh anyway yes he was an awful awful man.

He also kinda looks like mark cuban....
