That seems rather pointless :/

I don't understand why society puts such an emphasis on gender these days. It should be the person that counts, not their genetalia.

I mean, don't get me wrong. As a transgender, I understand how you'd want others to see your preferences, however, my entire personality doesn't hinge on my gender being identified correctly.... And if yours does, I'd personally reconsider your motives for choosing that gender in the first place.

It can be depending on the conversion. If someone was to put "I were yoga pants all the time" this could be extremely common or very rare depending on the persons gender.

Yoga pants seem pretty much the same regardless of the gender wearing them. XD

Seems pointless and I'm glad someones gender isn't glaringly obvious because it can bias the tone of the conversation, I.E people will talk more nicely to you if your female , because they might be in with a ''chance''. Your whole argument around yoga pants is kind of strange, to be honest as many many people have said gender does not matter in a discussion especially not on a site related to MLP.

Totally agree with this post.

TL;DR : if the gender of the person you're talking to really matters that much to you, just click on their profile to find out.

I can see it now. "Ohhh, this person is female and has an adorable avatar, DO WANT!" Hehehehe, JUST saying. ^_^

As already said, the feature is pointless, as in the few instances where you may care about someones gender, you can find out with a single click (if they choose to declare it- they may not).

I do not think such a feature would be useful enough to warrant the time to implement it.

I don't care about it and I wouldn't use it myself. Not that I have anything against it, I just don't want to use it. If people are curious about my gender they can look it up on my profile. I don't see why that info needs to be next to every post.

Meh.. would make that "guess the gender" topic pretty irrelevant :v

Also why not put their country of origin, then? Surely gender shouldn't be one of the first defining characteristics about how you perceive someone, but rather a state of being that should be acknowledged along with other things such as ethnicity.

I could do without the extra clutter. I wouldn't mind it being in the hovercard, though. (I'm on mobile right now and I cannot seem to remember if it's shown there or not.)

I don't understand why so many people are against this suggestion.

Should it ever be a feature in the future, users could have the choice to make their gender made public next to their avatar.

Some users might like having this option considering this website is mainly male and they don't want to be mistaken as a such.

What actual difference would it make if you were mistaken for male on a MLP forum? Even in online games I've heard the saying many times GIRL = Guy in real life     I mean it could be useful if someone was looking for some kind of online relationship here, or people that expect to be treated better because of their gender.

I'm just trying to say that I personally know people who are female and are assumed to be males just because this fandom is predominantly male.

It can be irritating when people mistake your gender.

I know that it shouldn't necessarily matter, I'm just saying that I can relate on the level of having people always assume you are a male on this site.

They could just put I AM A GIRL in big, bold caps on there profile. Might seem abit obnoxious but it gets the message across XD

I think it's more of your problem that you need this kind of identification. If you want others to know what gender you are, you can have your signature or avatar say Man or Woman to let others know which you are right off the bat.

No, please don't do this!

It goes ageist what MLP is all about if you're opinion on something is different based of the fact that I am a woman then that is really dumb. I feel like this would work vice versa as well.

This is a little close to how I view things.

Honestly I want people to have a reason to add to their profiles. I want people to have a reason to go to other profiles and check them out.

Also, I think from a visual design perspective, visual glut is unattractive. There was a discussion some time ago about adding national flags to the area housing a persons avatar. I eventually came to the realization it would start making the area cluttered.

Also, like a gender symbol, it would work on unintentionally coloring opinions of the actual content made and that flies against the motto I live by (imagine people complexly). Unless it is specific to the topic I couldn't care less what gender or nationality you are when I am reading your opinion. In the case where it matter I trust the intelligence and judgement of the individual to add this information to the text for context anyway.

It's pretty useless in my opinion. I think that if there's any disputes you can just hop onto their page and have a look.

Not to mention some people might be gender fluid or not want to talk about their gender.

I think it'd be a pretty useful feature; it's voluntary so if you don't want to talk about your gender/you're trans you don't need to have the symbol. Also I'd be pretty useful for me, since there are plenty of times I assume someone is a girl/boy and only realize when they correct me.

you are a genius

also I'm still right about the gender icon being dumb. gender doesnt even matter any more so it would just be a waste of bandwith.

The bandwidth usage of an image like that is negligible. While this idea won't happen, bandwidth is not the reason we won't implement this idea.

But I have a bad connection

Also I didn't want to bring it up but... tumblr genders. If you make a boy and girl symbol like in Pokemon, they'll make you add all the extra symbols they made up, like the people saying their gender is a Fish or Star or Flower. Do you want to open the Pandora's Box of tumblr?

Well, we can have three symbols like Boy,Girl and Other. That should cover all the genders.
