Hello and welcome to my thread. Please bear with me as this is my first post on this forum and this theory has been building for a few years (I started around November 2012.). I suppose now is a good time to share my thoughts using the information given to us thus far from Season 1 to Season 5.

 

Let's start with Elements of Harmony/The Tree of Harmony:

 

Ever since I started watching this show, I found myself asking these same questions:

 

- What exactly are the Elements of Harmony?

 

- Is there something more than what is revealed to us, the viewer?

 

- Where did the Tree of Harmony come from?

 

It was noted that the Elements of Harmony contains "spirits" of elements: Honesty, Kindness, Generosity, Loyalty, Laughter, and Magic/Friendship.

 

Using this fact, we can only assume two outcomes for the future:

 

- The Mane 6 go back in time and decide to become the Tree of Harmony in hopes of guiding the new gang through the right path. Thus, the time loop and the possible theories that Twilight is an incarnation of the Tree of Harmony or at least tied very strongly to it in the future.

 

- There were 6 other ponies or beings in the distant past (or possibly from different timelines.) who figured out the power of friendship, but all passed away somehow, or made the conscious decision to make a spell on themselves as the Tree of Harmony perfectly healthy, in the Everfree Forest before they could put it to good use.

 

This begs the question: What are they protecting from?

 

We currently don't know as there isn't much information to go by, but what we do know is that Elements are mostly resistant to and is super-effective against Dark Magic (or some kind of negative magic, if you want to be picky with Discord.). So whatever the Tree of Harmony is there for, it's protecting the area against someone or something possessing Dark Magic. And it's probably much bigger than Nightmare Moon, Discord, Queen Chrysalis, King Sombra, Flim and Flam (Yes, I'm counting them as villians.), and Tirek.

 

The show itself has Twilight Sparkle walking a very particular path, as if the Tree of Harmony already experienced the future and would lay the direction down for her clearly. Because of it, everything is going well with everyone. Disputes are quickly dealt with and the Cutie Mark Map is practically pointing to places in need of Friendship resolution.

 

It pointing towards something we haven't seen, yet. Or we may just find out in Season 6. Who knows?

It's a cool theory, and I like the idea of a stronger dark magic being held back by the tree of harmony. Perhaps that's why the tree is in the Everfree Forest. It's certainly much more dangerous and chaotic than pretty much anywhere else in Equestria.

well if this tree is really of harmony then there must be a dark side to it for you need to have both sides to have perfect balance. Without light there is no darkness and without darkness there is no light.

I'm sorry, I don't really know why, but I read your entire post in Sheldon Cooper's voice.

 

But yeah, that is certainly food for thought.
