Are you into a music genre some people don't even know exist?

It seems I run into this problem a bit more than I would like to. People occasionally ask me what type of music I like, and I say "It doesn't really matter", or something similar. Then of course they barrate me, because they NEED TO KNOW.

So I say "EuroBeat", and 100% of the time, they say "What is that?" Then I just leave, because I've explained it to enough people that I could probably put together a sweet mixtape.

Does anybody else have this issue?

As a metalhead in Idaho, this is bound to happen to me. First off, in the area of Idaho where I live in, pop, country, and rap are pretty much the only things other people listen to. Some of the metal subgenres I listen to and love are symphonic, folk, and sludge.

Okay, just after I wrote that, I read something in the school newspaper that mentioned sludge metal. That gives me some hope for the area.

It's well known enough but there are plenty of people who would give me very weird looks if I told them I listened to 'Djent'

Sort of. I listen to a genre of metal that most metal fans I talk to don't seem to pay much attention to and almost everybody else hates any and all metal.

What? I'm curious.

I'm not a medical expert, psychologist, psychiatrist, teacher or love doctor. Take my words with a pinch of salt, yeah?

I am an experienced cook, musician and care worker though, so that's something.

I know that pain. It's the same around here. Pop, country and rap. For awhile I tried to get into these genres because everyone else liked it but though I sometimes listen to them I could never be as into them as the people in my area.

Power and melodic death metal, mostly. Bands like Dream Evil, Disarmonia Mundi and Masterplan. People are either into really heavy black metal or stuff from the 80s. I guess it could be a case of simply not going out of my way to find others.

Dude it's so awesome to see another person who is a fan of melodic death metal! I also have a real soft spot for Dream Evil.

As for a genre of music that I enjoy that most people might not know exists would be folk punk.

Dude! Folk Punk is one of my favorite genres! Andrew Jackson Jihad is one of my favorite bands!

Ramshackle Glory is another great Folk Punk band

I even write folk punk songs, and once formed a folk punk band (that was very short lived) once.

Dream Evil is so much yes. <3

Seems like people who could like melodic death want it to be more or less heavy than it is. "Less screaming and I'd like it" they'd say! Or "it's not technical enough" I'd hear! :(

I wonder if Celtic music counts? I'm pretty sure a lot of people know it exists but aren't aware of it or something.

I also listen to a lot of celtic music. People know about it, but forget about it.

I actually need to find new Celtic stuff. I have an album from Celtic Woman that's mostly meh except for a couple songs and then I have a sampler album of a bunch of different artists but not much else. If you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

Well, depends on the type of Celtic music you want. If you want more traditional, then I would recommend Old Blind Dogs. If you are more into Celtic pub music, then there is The Dubliners, Gaelic Storm, Irish Rovers, and The Pogues. If you like more of the Celtic rock, then I would recommend Flogging Molly, The Tossers, or Dropkick Murphy's.

You can also always just listen to a Celtic Pandora station. That is a good way to find new bands.

A little bit of everything sounds good to me. :P

I actually didn't think of Pandora. I haven't used it in quite awhile. Perhaps I should do that.

I'm putting all the ones you just mentioned in my text file to remind me of this sort of stuff though. Even if I don't get to it now it'll be there for later.

Swing music.

People at least know what Irish music is (exactly what it says on the tin), but likely haven't heard any.

Swing music is quite nice. My friend usually listens to it a lot in his live art streams so it's grown on me!

Thought eurobeat was somewhat known, I don't know what genres other people know I like many at least. One recently would be electro swing it's pretty interesting and well very few people know of that combination. I suppose trap isn't known yet.

Ocean Grunge is my pick. I accidentally came upon the band §E▲ ▓F D▓G§ (which is how the band name is spelled) and thought they sounded Silent Hill-ish so I fell in love pretty easily.

It helps all their albums are name your price too tbh

Of modern music, I only find like one or two people who know what Funeral Doom is. In less modern music, I find that Romantic and back seems to leave many amiss.

One band that is neither is Khante, and like nobody that I met knows them.

I know the feeling. Sometimes when I say Eurobeat, and people don't understand me, I'll just say "Electronic Music", and they say, "so like pop?"

I hang my head. The only thing around here is pop, country, and rap. Not even the good kinds either, just Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and the like.

I don't like putting others down, but THERE IS NO VARIETY IT HURTS!

The Chieftains are another great band if you're looking for traditional Irish.
