Why did Twilight listen to Sunbutt and not bring her friends through the mirror?

As much as Twi puts Sunbutt on a pedestal, she's been ignoring orders, and Sunbutt has also been wrog on Twi going alone on multiple occasions.

First off, it was Sunbutt who told Twi to make friends. And in the very first episode, Twi was reluctant o. It was SPIKE who had to convince her to. It was Sunbutg who told Twi to avoid taking her friends on the Sombra mission, and against Tirek. Both times, She was wrong. Now she asks Twi to go alone yet again, and into a world she only assumes will cause chaos if Twi's pony friends went with hef, because Sunbutt said herself, she didn't know much about the human worlds- so how would she know?

Should Twi have taken her friends with her through the mirror, in spite of Sunbutt telling her not to, and having record of being wrong?

It's because she was heading into uncharted territory and didn't know what to expect - after all, they were dealing with parallel universes. And with Rainbow Rocks revealing Twilight does know a thing or two about that, it's fair to assume that she thought it could be possible that bringing her friends could cause rifts in space/time (which the two worlds's relations did cause that in Friendship Games). But even besides that, Equestria needed some form of defense while Twilight was gone, even if it's the incomplete Elements of Harmony. With those cases of Sombra and Tirek, those were threatening Equestria, and while Twilight did bring her friends to parts of those, she never brought them to the mane (ba dum tss) mission at hand, which was retrieving the crystal heart and battling Tirek, respectively. As for the first time in the first episode, well she was younger and more naive. Plus, she managed to find the loophole that Celestia never quite asked her to go there specifically to make friends, but rather to check up on the celebrations. Of course, Celestia probably knew of Twilight and the Elements of Harmony, so that may be why she instructed her to do that - sort of like how the prophet gave Neo false information in The Matrix.

tl;dr: It's an unknown world, and there could be space/time rifts if they all go. Equestria also needed some form of defense. As for the previous cases, Twilight never took her friends to the primary task that she was assigned to, she only took them for a part of the journey. And as for the first time, she just was young and naive.

I tend to look to the Reflections arc of the comics for this. In that arc, the world beyond the mirror and Equestria began to blend together because the repeated crossings made the barrier between the worlds unstable. I think the same would happen if all of the Mane 6 were to travel back and forth between CHS and Equestria on a semi-regular basis, much like what appeared to happen when Midnight began to use her powers.

The ponies being there would get in the way of the actual story. It would be weird for a school to suddenly have 6 new students who are only there temporarily, so they couldn't just have the pony Mane Six go through and get rid of the human Mane Six entirely. Since six new girls, five of whom already went to the school, would have to be explained, it would waste time. If they explained it quickly, fans wouldn't like it. If they didn't explain it at all, fans especially wouldn't like it .For them to explain it in a way where fans are satisfied, they would have to make it longer. They have a limit on how long the movie had to be, (which is a common reason for plot holes) so they went with having only Twilight go through and have Princess Celestia not know enough about the world to risk sending everyone. I doubt anything extremely terrible would have happened if the rest of the Mane Six followed Twilight, but Princess Celestia wasn't going to risk it.

Tirek only happened after the first movie, so it's an example of "Celestia being wrong" that shouldn't be used here. (Although I personally find it one of Celestia's biggest Idiot Ball moments.) Also, although Twilight didn't originally see the importance of making friends, she certainly did by the end of the pilot episode, making Celestia actually right in that instance, which would just confirm that she SHOULD listen when Celestia says something. So all that's really left is P. Celly being wrong about Twilight having to defend the Crystal Empire by herself. And as you point out, she does put Celestia on a pedestal. So it's not so strange that she would listen to her former mentor, even though she'd been proven wrong once.

Was the reason for not taking along the rest of the Mane Six a good one? Well, even given the fact that it is plot convenient (because it is), her reason as given is "Sending all of you could upset the balance of this alternate world, creating havoc that would make it impossible for Twilight to get the crown back from Sunset Shimmer", which actually does make sense. How Celestia knew this is not explained but given that the Humane Five would all suddenly have clones when the rest arrived in the CHAU, it would indeed have caused havoc and probably interfered with Twilight's mission.

So, to answer the question, no, she shouldn't have ignored Celestia's advice and brought her friends along.

Happy minion of The Fabulous One!

Because outside the pilot, Twilight has never questioned Celestia's order at all.

-Don't have anyone help you save the Crystal Empire? Sure!

-Don't tell your friends about the rampaging monster and the guy who betrayed us? Okay, got it!

-Send you friendship reports? I'll send one every week and if I don't I freak out about it and nearly destroy half the town!

Heck even in the pilot, Twilight completes Celestia's orders first instead of ignoring Celestia's orders and going straight to the library to try and stop Nightmare Moon.  Sure she wants to rush the job, but still she has a near infallible loyalty to Celestia.

Unless Twilight is faced with OVERWHELMING evidence not to obey Celestia, she trusts her completely without fault and places Celestia on what has got to be the highest pedestal in existence. Her following Celestia's orders is completely within character.

Edit: I take that back, there is one time Twilight ignores Celestia's orders, when reforming Discord. And I love that, it shows just how much Discord affected Twilight that she'll both ignore her mentor AND resort to morally questioning brainwashing techniques.

Celestia seems to be pretty into the whole "Twilight u alone must save teh day!" thing, even though Twily has a positively dreadful track record of accomplishing things solo. And Twilight still always seems to listen to her for some reason . Feels like her development shoots back to the beginning of the series each time Celestia opens her mouth.

But hey, they'd probably struggle to fill two-twenty minute episodes (let alone full movies) without having Twilight running around alone and panicking for much of that time :derp:. This is why I don't care for most of the plot episodes.
