The Law & Order: SVU episode "Execution" ends with the bad guy deliberately provoking the prison guards into attacking him, which injures him enough to delay his execution indefinitely, and the episode treats this as his last laugh over his victims' families.

Okay:

1. I'm pretty sure he didn't plan on going into a coma.

2. As far as the show's concerned, he's still under (even after all these seasons), so he might as well be dead anyway.

3. Even if he does ever wake up, he's still eligible for execution.

Just a textbook case of what TV Tropes would call "Did Not Think This Through."

In the Wild Wild West movie, why does that giant cyborg guy just short-circuit and fall over before he can kill Will Smith with the shovel?

That guy just walked through literally everything that Smith could throw at him without even batting an eyelash, and there was absolutely no indication whatsoever that Smith managed to hit him in any kind of weak spot.

EXPLAIN, MOVIE!!!

Anytime a story has an irredeemable villain and tries to convince me that the hero killing him would be bad.

Look, unless said villain is redeemable (which he obviously isn't, in this case) and/or said hero actually shows signs of being willing to attack innocents as well, then all that said hero would do is make said villain a Karma Houdini and enable him to pull even more s*** on society.

And most of the time, said hero ends up having to kill said villain anyway in self-defense, thus making the whole dilemma pointless.
