Does Spike have too big an ego?

The problem with this is that it's always for the same thing "Spike , Crystal Empire's Hero!" all the damn time in the Crystal Empire. Like, it gets old really, really quick

Compared to Dash, he's tame Unlike Dash, he knows when to drop it and act humble

Considering the number of times he's messed up epicly in Ponyville, I'm sure he appreciates the appreciation when he's in the Crystal Empire.

He uses his ego for good use! I mean yeah, it was bad in Equestria Games, but at least the same mistake wasn't repeated. In The Crystalling, he just used his ego to make his fans happy, and then quickly go back to the task at HAND (that's right, I said "hand", fite me irl!) to help a friend out in her time of need. And in The Times They Are A Changeling, he kept trying to use his ego to help friends in need, and then he risked losing it and didn't care!

So yeah, he does have a ego, but he knows how to use it. Living with Twilight really pays off! Also Rainbow is starting to control it more from time to time, even though she does forget. So basically, it's best to use the writers that know how to bring the show to the right direction to handle the characters. All of them have improved since their debuts!

Personally, I think Rainbow Dash's ego is more deserved and better handled than Spike's. It makes her more interesting and adds to her personality.

Spike's comes across as forced and gimmicky. I also hate that he gets all the credit when a lot of other ponies played a crucial role in stopping Sombra.

He does have an ego for sure, but its no where near as bad as Rainbow Dash's xD

It's nowhere near as deserved as Rainbow Dash's either.

Spike is the assistant to a princess, grew up in Canterlot, and saved Equestria from Garble's wrath.

Rainbow Dash is just an arrogant dumb jock.

She's also a poor element bearer. She destroyed a factory just so she wouldn't have to be without her turtle.

Does Spike have a big ego? Yes. TOO big? I'm not so sure about that. It has gotten him in trouble at times, but his big ego at times is also what gives him confidence to help others, including save the Crystal Empire, and become Dragon Lord.

Considering what Spike endured, growing up as an only dragon in a pony society, I don't blame him either. He's had to prove his masculinity, his worth as a dragon, and he's often neglected or underestimated by others, including Twilight. For what he has accomplished and beyond, Spike has earned his right to have a big ego and its not too big at all.  :mustache:

In-universe excuse: He's a kid. Kids (and children in adult bodies) tend to be ego-centric. So, it makes some sense for him to have an ego.

Real world excuse: His having multiple writers makes him a tad inconsistent, at times, like everyone else in the series. When he was the focal character, they dialed up all of his faults to 20, including the ego. So...as long as he's not the focal character, he's not "too egotistic"?

His accomplishments as a Dragon are pretty high compared to other Dragons and he deserves the right to flaunt a little for being such a little guy. He's the underdog basically and he's just showing that he's got some stuff under his purple scales. Sure, at some times it can be overbearing or downright cringey but hey, at least he's having some good fun at it and valuable morals. He doesn't care what others think when he gloats but really is it hurting anypony? Spike's a Dragon and Dragons enjoy what they do regardless.

Pretty much what @@Cwanky said, Spike has an ego as a reaction to his diminutive status in pony society. He is minimized by how different he is compared to everyone around him, his physical size, and by how he gets treated by other ponies. Personally, after the awful way they treated him in "Princess Spike," it's no wonder he's overcompensating now.

Am I right that this topic came up due to how Spike was acting at the beginning of "The Times are a Changeling?" He was pretty jazzed about being famous in the Empire - more so than in previous visits to the Empire. I would point out however, that episode needed to showcase his fame because the fear of sacrificing that reputation and then actually going through with it was a major plot point later in the episode.

So I think it is fairer to say he only had a bigger-than-usual ego here because DHX/Hasbro insists that anyone who watches the show be able to understand an episode even if it's the first one they've ever seen. Hence the heavy exposition - including Spike's ego - which was a kind of exposition in itself.

Rainbow Dash has proven to be heroic on far more occassions than Spike, and the only time she got a big head about it was MMDW. Other than that, she's actually pretty humble about her achievements.

Spike's only gotten more and more insufferable every time he gets a taste of game. He's gonna need to be brought down before long.

Also, damaging the factory in TFTM has nothing to do with disloyalty. If anything, it proved she can be a bit too loyal sometimes. She was prepared to alter nature so she could be with her friend.

Probably because he's younger than the Mane Six, and doesn't know how to deal with it.

Well, no shit Rainbow has been heroic more often, because she's one of the Mane Six, and thus gets more chances than Spike.

Damaging the factory showed that Rainbow only cares about herself.

Spike is insufferable? Rainbow was insufferable in Newbie Dash and 28 Pranks Later.

I disagree I think rainbow dash is loyal to tank and humble  and and spike is actually is insufferable and she not perfect no pony perfect and human are impefect creature so no rainbow dash is the best element of loyalty and  damaging the factory showed that rainbow dash care about tank and her friend

Neither Rainbow or Spike have a bad ego, infact Spike had severe self worth issues for quite awhile so I'd say it's pretty balanced all things considered. Even when he boasts a bit it's more goofy and cute than anything and he has certainly earned his reputation. But I've seen charachters with MUCH worse ego's become fan favorites hello Vegeta and Kaiba or hell even Discord from this show counts. They are'nt bad charachters but the point is Rainbow and Spike show their positives much more  that the brief head swealing can be forgiven and even enderaring. I mean they certainly would'nt let it get so far that they actually end up helping  a villian in causing serious damage and possibly get people put into coma's or killed because of their over inflated ego like the three i mentioned.
