My reaction after seeing part 2

Somewhere deep down I wished that Chrysalis would take Starlight's hoof

Sure, maybe the whole thing with reforming every single villain is getting a bit boring but I would love to see reformed Chrysalis. Both for the visuals and how she'd change personality vise

Yeah, about that…...

I for one am glad Chrysalis didn't get reformed. But I have to say, I'm disappointed that the writers just let her escape. I keep hearing people complain that Starlight never got punished for her bad deeds, but there's no debate that Chrysalis is the one who really deserves it. She's scum. She abducted five alicorns and all their friends, turned her own hive against her, openly threatened Starlight, yet she got away scot-free. Every pony with a horn could have blasted her in the ass with all the magic they had. She could have been dumped in Tartarus and made Tirek's butt-buddy for all eternity. And none of that happened. That's garbage.

Hell, that's the least they could do to her. If this show had an adult rating, I could see Discord snapping his fingers to bring everyone including Chrysalis to Starlight's village, and make burning her at the stake one of their festivities.

I'll just put my entire reaction in spoiler tags to be safe.

This was a really good season final. I really liked Twilight's hinting at wanting to go along with Starlight to her village, only for her to ask Trixie along instead. The chemistry between those two is great anyway, so the episode gets points right away for that. I also like how Starlight's anxiety to go there is portrayed in the first place. The dream she had about it actually closely mirrors real life situations where one is reluctant to do something they know they should.

Later, when Starlight finds out about the changelings and wakes up Trixie, I love how Trixie's reaction to "there's something wrong with my friends" is, "I can think of a whole list of things that are wrong with your friends." After that, Thorax and Discord showing up made the episode even better. I think my favorite moment was Discord's reaction to finding out Fluttershy had been taken. He hasn't looked that dangerous since the Season Two opening.

I think the way they neutralized Discord and Starlight was a pretty good one as well once they got to the changeling hive. Discord without access to his magic was still great alongside Starlight and Trixie, and the lack of magic really gave Trixie the chance to shine, rather than being the powerless butt monkey she usually is, barring any escapades with magical demonic amulets.

Confronting Chrysalis with Thorax disguised as Starlight was also pretty well done, but the ease with which the other changelings aside from Thorax turned good was a bit jarring. At the very least I'm happy that Chrysalis rejected redemption and that Starlight was the one who figured out how Thorax could beat her. The magic-neutralizing throne also gives me a good headcanon reason why they were able to take the princesses this time, since I'm going to assume they somehow carried such a rock with them on their mission. Since it's susceptible to changeling magic, it also makes sense Thorax's version of weaponized friendship was able to destroy it.

Final thoughts: really great final which finally averts defeats equals friendship and shipping fuel for Starlight/Trixie. Definitely redeems this season in my eyes, especially in light of the recent good episodes.

If Starlight had taken Twilight anyhow, Chrysalis would have had two choices to make at that point:

  1. Kidnap Starlight alongside Twilight, which would have sealed her victory.
  2. Kidnap everyone else but Twilight, who could then take the role as leader of a coalition of all their allies to storm the hive and save her friends and family.

As for Chrysalis' throne, while it is justified the throne could have been used in some way to help in the kidnapping of the Elements of Harmony and the Royal Family, Chrysalis' best bet would have been to do it at night, when the Royal Guard were mostly asleep, and her targets would be the most vulnerable. And while it was designed to block all magic but Changeling magic, that was its fatal flaw. When Thorax gave his love energy willingly to Chrysalis and the throne, we saw how the throne cracked from being given Changeling energy filled with friendship rather than having it taken by force, and once the other Changelings followed Thorax's lead at Starlight's urging, it was too much for the dark magic to withstand, leading to the throne's absolute destruction and freedom of the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony, allowing them to use their magic again since the Anti-Magic field had been destroyed with it. And with Chrysalis having fled to parts unknown after swearing vengeance on Starlight, the Royal Family and the Elements of Harmony now know she's still out there and will be ready for her next time so something like this does not happen again.

Yeah, about that…...

I was thinking the same thing. It is clear when Chrysalis reveals to still be very much alive, the Royal Family, the Elements of Harmony, and the Master of Chaos, were pretty much warning her that any attempt to attack them now was pointless now that her throne and its Anti-Magic field were decimated and they were no longer trapped in cocoons and their magic blocked as was the case only a few minutes ago. They were more than ready to send her to Tartarus for the Hell she just put them through, but gave Starlight a chance to see if she could get Chrysalis to repent. It failed, and Chrysalis used the moment to escape, leaving Celestia, Luna, Shining Armor, Twilight, and Rainbow Dash to watch as the former Queen of the Changelings fled to parts unknown, but now that they know she's back and still out there, they will be ready for her next time.

Honestly? I found it underwhelming compared to what it could have been. Chrysalis kinda was written as a cliched kidnapper villain, except at the end. I loved that part. I also think they focused too much time on Starlight's worries and too little on the Changeling Kingdom. That made the pacing wonky for me. In all honesty, I think I liked Top Bolt the best.

Yeah, I think there was more to the story than we thought, but the writers had to cut out a lot of it to squeeze into 44 minutes, so it did feel rushed in a few places and underwhelming as well.

On the note of starlight's worries, Its one reason I feel the Second part of the two parter was good despite starlight, not because of her: Thorax showing how he's grown was LOADS better than starlight's worries IMO, and he would have worked much better as the focused protagonist of the episode really, especially since, at the end of the day, it was more about his journey leading to the redemption of his race than starlight.

Yeah, the finale could have focused more on him, then we might have seen how the Swarm kidnapped the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony in the first place, then see them be freed from the cocoons when the Swarm turned on Chrysalis and destroyed her throne. In the end, it was what Thorax learned and put to good use that saved everyone, but Starlight still had some part in it when she convinced him to share his love energy rather than let it be taken by force.

Well, we can be happy that Twilight and friends will be the heroes again in the movie. Don't know about the Season 7 premiere.

Whatever happens, the writers better give the Princesses a break and allow them some time in the spotlight, or a lot of fans who love the Princesses are going to be complaining about how they are being treated lately, especially after the Season 6 finale as well.

Let's hope Starlight won't be hogging the spotlight next season.

True. At the end of the day, it's for DHX to know, and for the audience to find out.

Yeah, it certainly is. Why does DHX have to keep screwing the Royal Family like this with how the writers do episodes anyway?

Blame the writers for having the story lines make the Princesses helpless against a big threat like Chrysalis returning for revenge. I really want them to knock that off and give the Princesses some time in the spotlight already like they did with them helping to save the Crystal Empire in the Season 6 premiere. However, you're right about hoping the writers will change direction and give them some more development in the future. Maybe they actually will, if they don't want a riot from the Brony Community on their hands for treating the Royal Family like this.

As for the Worf Effect, follow this link: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWorfEffect

That should answer your questions.

Years later and the writers still repeat this aggravating issue.
Especially in the series finale, it just hurts.
(No, distracting the trio and turning the powerless trio to stone does not fix the issue there)
