So in the season finale we saw Thorax helping to dethrone Chrysalis and rising as the possible new king of the Changelings(BTW, love their new design), but for me that raises the following question:

In the Changeling society, what makes a king a king? What makes a queen a queen? What separates then from the common changelings?

In Equestria, it's pretty straightforward: Celestia and Luna have a lot of magical power and control the sun and the moon, they're seemingly immortal and as such have hundreds - maybe thousands - of years of experience, therefore they're the most fitting candidates for running Equestria, therefore they're in charge.

But with the Changelings: what makes their ruler their ruler? In Chrysalis' case it could be a lot of things: she could be the daughter of a former king and queen, she could have been chosen by the former ruler, she could have built the hive herself(personally i think it's this one), she could be the wisest and/or most powerful within them,Etc. Etc. Etc.

And Thorax's case could also be a lot of things: it could be because he overthrew the queen, because he was the first Changeling to "Evolve" into their new form(again, i think it's this one) or because rebelling against the queen was mostly his idea in thr first place.

Do the comics say anything about that? If so i'd like to know.

So, what do you think makes Chrysalis the queen? And what makes Thorax the king? I'll be looking forward to reading what you guys think about it.

I always assumed it was just like an insect hive. The queen is pretty much the mother of all in the hive and she does all the birthing stuff. So a typical hive dealio.

 

Now, I think the changelings have gone in a direction that is less hive-like and it gives them far more freedom, but that makes one wonder how reproduction is going to work now. o_o
