None other than the true underdog of the Mario series himself, Yoshi! This happy-go-lucky dinosaur may be cute and cuddly, but he's a dangerous predator and can put up a hell of a fight. Just ask Bowser how many thousand soldiers this guy has feasted on.

Despite his no-regrets attitude towards murdering Bowser's forces, Yoshi has an incredibly kind heart and strongly believes in peace, justice, and helping others out however he can (these are traits common to most Yoshis that we have seen, by the way - much like how humans have a degree of natural aggression hardwired into them, Yoshis seem to have a similar degree of benevolence hardwired into them). Look at all the times he has thanklessly let Mario use him as a running footstool to clear the most formidable of pits. Eight of his predecessors risked their lives to cross Yoshi's Island, infiltrate 16 hostile bases, and survive a trip through deep wilderness where everything was out to kill them, all to bring a random baby that fell out of the sky to his parents... twice.

You might not be a Nintendo fan, but you've got to at least have some respect for Yoshi and his species.

By the way, I wrote a lengthy two-page essay for my English 10 final exam on Yoshi, and totally aced it. :D

Message, sir.

AssMcgee is the greatest hero in video game history.

My argument?

The fact that Oregon Trail won't take your shit -- this dude was a badass who let his family drown just so he could reach the end.

... The ends justified the means.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to go with Link. No, Snake. Definitely Snake. Actually, Gordon Freeman is probably the be... oh, I forgot about Ratchet, that dude is awesome! ...but on the other hand...

That's really all there is to say on the matter.

Kirby, obviously. He's pink, he's adorable, he eats copious amounts of everything, and he can do anything given the right copy ability! Plus, he rides a hamster, you don't get more awesome than riding a hamster.

Kiryu Kazuma from the Yakuza series. he's a good guy, and a bad guy at the same time. He adopts a kid, but he takes no shit from anyone, and he has a badass tattoo.

I'd say Big Boss, at least for Metal Gear Solid 3 and Peace Walker. Kiefer Sutherland killed the character for me. Thanks Kojima  :(

I agree with Samus too, she is a badass (Other M never happened, it's like the Equestria Girls of the Metroid franchise)

I'm going with Cole Macgrath from the inFamous series. The biggest criticism of him is that he's too generic, but I think that's actually the reason I like him so much, because he's basically just a regular guy.

And I can't forget about Phoenix Wright.

I'm going to have to post again, because I've expanded my horizons beyond Final Fantasy into Xenosaga, and this series has some of the best damn characters I have ever seen in any media. Video game, movie, etc. I love them.

The main character and hero of Xenosaga isn't just your typical man. She is a 20-something year old female who doesn't look too overtly sexual or kickass. Her outfits are more subtle. In the first game of the series, she wears a uniform that is actually pretty unrevealing. Whilst the other games proceed to give her more action-y attire and expose her body, it's still not as bad as most females in other games.

Her name is Shion Uzuki. From the first time I saw this character, I was endeared to her instantly. So surprised they'd go and make a nerdy scientist the protagonist of a JRPG. Whilst it's true that the characters get more equal focus in this series than others (which is far from a bad thing in my opinion), she's still clearly the main character.

Shion is adorable. I love everything about her, from her face, to her hair,  to her voice. Especially her voice. (Except in the second game, where she changes voice actors) That voice is sort of like Yuna from Final Fantasy X, but with a more spunky feel to it. It's so uniquely Shion though. It has a softness to it, whilst simultaneously depicting lots of energy.

And that's one of the things I admire about Shion. She's got this strange sort of energy and a personality that stands out. The first thing we find out about her in the series is that she is really damn reckless. She often jumps into things with little regard to her safety. Why? Because she's so passionate. She's very passionate about accomplishing her goals. And even though she does a lot of stupid things that I probably wouldn't do, I find this reckless impulsive behavior... endearing. It just seems really kickass and admirable how she jumps into things like that. I kind of wish I was a little more like that, had more of an impulse to do things. (Though still not be as reckless as she is)

Even though Shion is really reckless though and I tend not to be (well, sometimes I am. But not like Shion), I still relate to her on a deeper level than any other game character. The reason is because of her passion for her creation, KOS-MOS. You see, Shion created an android, continuing from the work of her dead boyfriend, Kevin. She and this android have a very special relationship, one that I can't get enough of. It's one of the things that makes Shion utterly reckless. When I'm playing the game, I can feel Shion's emotions for her creation. They resonate with me so deeply. She really cares about KOS-MOS, about this person that she put all of her heart and soul into. As an artist who is very passionate about my creations, it's just... nice to see this explored in a game.

It also helps that I actually really care about KOS-MOS as a character and want to see her develop more of a heart/emotions. I can tell that Shion also feels the same way, and I can relate to her so much whenever something bad happens to KOS-MOS. She wants her creation to be something more than a weapon, than what everyone else intended her to be. That's what I want as well. For my creations, and for KOS-MOS herself.

She also tends to hide when something is wrong with her. Shion is just that type of focused person who prefers to keep going, to continue onwards without stopping for what she might consider trivialities. An admirable determined spunky sort. If something's wrong with her, who cares? The objective must be completed, that can wait another time. Worrying others wastes time. Another way I can relate to her.

Shion is pretty much what would happen if you put me in a video game and juiced up my recklessness levels high. Of course, then again, like Shion... if I get passionate about something, a project or an action, I'll act recklessly and just jump into it as well, with little regard for anything. Very little matters more to me than accomplishing my goals and projects, and the same can be said of Shion. To see a character who resembles me somewhat physically and acts a lot like me in a video game is just so nice. And that's why I currently consider her to be the best video game hero.
