Well, basically because of this: That's the main difference between mares and stallions in MLP. Just because of the shape of their nose you're able to determine their gender. Now your shark pony has that more circular shaped nose; Also he's thin and has a long mane and eyelashes - no wonder why people assume he's female. Theory aside, he just looks like a mare anyway. So.. that's why people automatically think he's female and that's not their fault. But still, boxy and flat isn't really something many kinds of shark even have--more sleek and curved so they doesn't get stopped by the water itself while swimming. The eyelashes though... Besides, I'm pretty sure hooves don't help there either. They kinda do, though it's still noticeable, so everything was telling me sh he was a mare.
