spoiler The season 7 finale and "The Journal of the Two Sisters"

Honestly, I don't care of books and comics. It's not the first time that a book or a comic gets decanonized by the show. It's simple: the show is the real canon, and once the show contraddicts something that a Book or a comic told, those cease to exist. End of story.

The important thing to me is that the show doesn't contraddict itself, and as long that doesn't happen I'm fine. One of the points of strenght of Shadow Play was that they took all the pieces of the puzzle established in past seasons and finally putted them together, and the result was extremely satisfying. I'm with Jeric here, this would have  been a great series finale if it was as such officially.... but it isn't. Oh well.

Actually, Shadow Play contradicted a previous episode. In Twilight's Kingdom, Celestia said that Scorpan befriended a young unicorn wizard. While she didn't say it was Star Swirl, we saw that it was. When Tirek refused to abandon their plans to steal magic, Scorpan told Celestia and Luna and they handled it. But according to Shadow Play, Celestia and Luna were too young to even understand how dangerous the Pony of Shadows was when Star Swirl and the other Pillars imprisoned themselves and the Pony of Shadows in limbo.

You said it yourself: "a young unicorn wizard". While it was similar to Starswirl in design there was no implications he was Starswirl (that was more of lazyness of the storyboarders who did that unicorn identical to Starswirl. There have been some other times in which storyboarders did things on their own like the fat pony at the end of Canterlot Boutique which was supposed to be just an ordinary pony, or that Rainbow Pegasus in Games ponies Play and Hearts Warming tail who was believed for years to be RD's father until it was debunked by the same storyboarders, and then RD's REAL father appeared afterward. No surprises in this). Plus, in MMC Celestia pointed that Starswirl didn't actually understood friendship, and Shadow Play connected directly to that.

She'll be like ... "hey this statue seems kinda newish. What happened here?"

Would she? I don't recall the episode stating they built the statue before she disappeared. But I might be wrong...

I would think she'd be more dismayed they got so bent out of shape over the destruction of the statue rather than simply rebuilding it in the first place - and forgiving the pony that just rescued their town from disappearing forever.

It was a joke referencing the fact it was recently destroyed. I wasn't being serious.

Why can't both be true again? I'm not seeing the contradiction.

That's not a contradiction.

We have no idea how much time passed between Scorpan befriending Starswirl and Tirek getting sent away.

It is possible Scorpan met Starswirl pre pony of shadows and Tirek attacked years later, when the princesses were prepared.

Or the more likely, Scorpan befriended Starswirl, but alerted the princesses because they were still the two alicorns, and Starswirl defeated them and banished them.

Unlike the Journal of the Two Sisters, this is something that can be explained.

I will be sure to ask Jim or Haber after the episode airs officially so I don't seem like a scummy pirate.
