But right now I'm too obsessed with my current wallpaper to get rid of it just yet. If I new the Japanese word for husband (which I should, I know the language fluent enough to hold a conversation) I would start a new thing. Waifu is just the Japanese pronunciation of the English word and because of the dialect is actually pronounced in much the same way, the "fu" at the end sounding like just an f. They do have a word for spouse in general, but I dont think the word has gender to it. In most situations the gender of the spouse is implied. The word is simply Haigusha. Thats Haitatsu (mating) + Mono (person). When the words are combined, context dictates Mono becomes Gusha, a word meaning nothing by itself, but in the context, it means partner. So the word is quite litterally "mating partner". The word wife was borrowed by the Japanese after the concept of marriage for reasons outside of concieving more children to keep the family name going was introduced into their culture. Its actually Otto (I cant believe I didnt remember that), but I dont know what weird stuff people come up with. Oh wait! there's one for wife to (I still cant believe I didn't remember) its Tsuma.
