Starlight Glimmer Controversy

I know everypony wants Starlight to appear frequently on the show, even I do. But the point is, Starlight is still not a main character because official material/sources do not designate her as such, according to the show's official staff.

Do you know why Starlight has gotten a lot of screen time in the last two seasons? It's because of us. We're the ones who keep demanding the writers to make more Starlight episodes because we think she's the best pony. We seriously need to stop this behavior and allow the Mane Six more screen time again because would be extremely controversial if Starlight became the new main protagonist when she's not at all supposed to be.

Like I still want to see at least one more Pinkie/Fluttershy episode (which is the only thing I want the most of all) as much as some Rainbow Dash fans want to see Lightning Dust again. I also originally wanted to see something for Pinkie/CMCs, but after thinking it over, I decided that wasn't necessary at the end.

This is not just about you, you know? The writers just can do so much as to please everyone and the mane 6 got already alot of coverage in the last 7 seasons, so why not give Starlight the spotlight?

Also, Starlight was a vital part in the last 2 season finales, so you can't tell me that she isn't an important character.

I remember a time when Twilight wasn't getting alot of her own episodes in season 5 and 6. Does this also not make her a main character?

I'm just going to go ahead and remind you that Hasbro is very hands off with designing the merchandise and the merchandise is often filled with mistakes, misinformation and poor quality. So if that is your argument it's pretty weak.

I mean the company that makes the DVDs is Shout Factory! and they are so incompetent that they can not even release a bluray for the seasons in 2018 despite releasing blurays for the 4 EQG movies, but not the EQG specials. So if we are going off of the DVD remember the level of competence we're dealing here.

Personally, I wouldn't mind more focus on characters outside the Mane 6.  Starlight and Trixie included.

 

Hell, I see them both as more of a Comedy Duo, like Abbot and Constello, and Laurel and Hardy.

1. The fandom had very little input in Starlight's inclusion during S7 and lack thereof during S6. Season 6 was already well into production when The Cutie Map aired, and given DHX's track record, S7 all but likely began production while S5 all but finished wrapping itself up.
2. Aside from Crystalling and To Where, Starlight's arc was very uninvolved for most of S6. For the most part, she was there only when the plot demanded it, and could've been placed in episodes as a tertiary character to show us improvement in her studies. Season 7 put way more effort into her arc in both quality and quantity and made her belong to the mane cast.
3. Just because people within DHX say Starlight isn't a mane character doesn't make it true. The ReMane Seven see and treat her as one of them, and S6 tried to show us she's one of them. Like I wrote before, S7 puts forth effort to include her as an equal. All Bottled Up, Fame & Misfortune, Fluttershy Leans In, Mane Thing, and Shadow Play all show us how the Mane 8 view and treat each other.

   Starlight was heavily involved in both Horse Play and Mean 6. The conversations and equal involvement heavily indicate they're equal.

The other issue is that the show creators and writers have absolutely no control over merchandise. So what's on the merchandise does not reflect their opinions or thoughts on how important Starlight is or is not to their writing.

Honestly I don't see any controversy here. A character who was not previously a main character evolve(d)(s) into a main character. It happens all the time and it causes little to no issues most of the time. All I see is whining because you don't like other people to have things you don't want to happen. Get over it, otherwise you do ridiculous things like make topics like this and make a fool of yourself.

Basically this. I for one have gotten really tired of the Starlight debate over the past couple of seasons. Honestly, without characters like Starlight Glimmer, I don't think the series would still be continuing. It needs to evolve if it wants to stay relevant in the eyes of its audience.

And if you're a purist who doesn't want changes, then I hate to burst your bubble... but Season 8 will continue the trend of changing things up.

Well, quite a bit, to be exact. Even though their mane arcs are complete, no character is truly finished, and a new arc can begin.

• Twilight became a princess? She now holds the Princess of Friendship title, and a school is opening to teach all walks of life the Magic of Friendship.
• Rarity successfully opens her business in Canterlot. But she opens a new branch in Manehattan.
• The CMCs receive their new Marks, but created a mission to help others find their life goals.
• Dash is a wonderbolt, but remains Scootaloo's mentor, and bronies have clamored for a possible return (and redemption) of Lightning Dust.
• Big Mac and Sugar Belle are an item; if he decides to leave Sweet Apple Acres, we don't know how well or poorly AJ will receive the news.
• Starlight remains Twilight's pupil, but has become more and more independent since Celestial Advice. Her end goal remains to be determined.
• The Perfect Pear opens the possibility of bringing in more members of the Pear family into the series.

@MegaSean45 has put forth grand ideas for his S9 what-if episodes for the last day and a half in his status updates, and I recommend checking them out.

A lot of people up there have already pointed out similar thoughts to mine here. The merchandise may not treat Starlight as a Mane character, but the Mane 6 do treat her in-universe as she should be: an equal friend. As long as she remains a good moral character sometimes struggling with her flaws, this so-called "controversy" doesn't bother me and honestly is not worth getting wrap up in.
