movies/tv What movies/tv shows/books would you classify as "Meaningful Entertainment"?

Most of watch movies/tv and read books/comics for the sake of fun or enjoyment. But is there any form of media that you could consider meaningful? As in, something that has a profound message and/or has deep personal value to you?

Neon Genesis Evangelion (NOW AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX)

Star Trek TOS and Next Gen are packed with bite-sized philosophy and accessible, well delivered messages.

As far as movies go, film is technically an art form, but among non-art films the best for me would probably be eternal sunshine of the spotless mind or one of wes anderson's movies.

The question is too vague. Something can be meaningful to one person, and not another. It's not my place to decide what is and isn't meaningful.

As in, a show that with a significant moral or meaning. A show that can be enjoyed on multiple levels.

For me:

- Buffy the Vampire Slayer

- My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (Obviously)

- Angel

- Avatar: The Last Airbender

- X-Men: The Animated Series

These shows (among others) have great writing and characters to go along with lots of subtext and metaphors.

MLP: FIM. I don’t think this needs explaining :dash:

another I consider on this category, is Castlevania Lorda of Shadow. I like the He Who Fights Monsters trope at play, because it was subtle, and tragic

Babylon 5. Best Sci-Fi TV show ever. Layers upon layers of unique lore and character driven plots. Best way to describe B5 would be Mass Effect before Mass Effect. The story telling, character growth, the look into subjects like philosophy and faith, and suspenseful action went that deep.

For movies, I would go with The Crow. It's Gothic, gritty, stylistic, action packed. But underneath is a movie with heart, delving into grief, loss and love. The last film of the late great Brandon Lee, and in his final interview, he said he was proud to have taken up the part. Like his character says about the little things that bring meaning to ones life:  "Nothing is trivial."

All great examples. Speaking of, can you believe that The Crow is now 25 years old?

I can't believe it's 25 years young. In some ways, it feels so distant. Like a relic of a bygone era. You just don't see films in that style anymore.

I just did a search looking up when exactly it came out and if there would be any special screenings. Turns out it was back in may and it was only a select few. Was hoping it'd get treated better, but at least I won't have to kick myself for missing out.

I actually remember an interview Screen Junkies did, that the same guys who did The Crow also worked on John Wick. And it just clicked for me that the John Wick films are like spiritual successors to The Crow in many ways.

Now I wanna see Keanu as Eric Draven.

I mean, the first John Wick is as close as well get to seeing another (good) adaptation of the crow on the big screen.

I've had shows that I liked, ones that I enjoyed, ones that I loved. But then there's Gurren Lagann. Even though it's not my top show, something about it spoke with me on another level

  • 3 weeks later...

Evangelion

Aku no Hana

LotGH

Lain

Perfect Blue

Boogiepop Phantom

I'll add Nana in there as well

I'd say End of Evangelion had a biggest impact on me as a single work on a personal level

Though as a whole LotGH and Lain are more impactful to me
