Why is everyone so negative towards us?

I was wanting to get some of your guys opinions on the hate aimed towards us. I don’t know why everywhere I look people are getting bashed for liking the show. I haven’t really told anybody but I hate to see fellow members criticized and teased. I don’t really like the term brony either I think that there is fans of the show and people who like it more. I know we get a bad name for sexualized material that some members produce but some of us are just regular guys who want to be accepted. I put my memorabilia away for now but that’s only so my friends don’t know. I still love the show and always will but I think I’ll keep this a secret between my family and you guys.

Because society is terrible and people hate anything that differs from their own views (I'm guilty of this sometimes, though I try not to be). As for why we specifically get more negativity than a lot of other groups or fandoms, I don't know. Maybe it's the whole naïve theme of the show, the childish appearance of the characters, or (the most likely reason in my opinion) the actions of a few are the only things anybody ever sees.

In the words of 2 the Ranting Gryphon, "Every group has its idiots. Don't hate the group, just hate the f*cking idiots." If only more people thought that way.

Only two people in my life know I watch MLP. My childhood friend (who I told willingly because I know he's a very accepting person and a true friend), and my mom, who I only told because she wanted to know why I was going to Baltimore for a few days in August. There are plenty of people who accept us, but also plenty who don't.

Something like that has happened to me recently.

I was at my job, on my break, and I decided to get on the forums while I was on break.

Then, some a**hole who also worked there decided to peak at my phone while I was on the forums and then proceeded to tell me what that I was a “faggot” and asked if I wanted to “f**k any of those ponies*”

I was very upset by this and my manager told me to go home for the day!

He had no right to invade my privacy and then insult me! He was fired that day thankfully!

Good riddance to that jerk who insulted his fellow co-worker. I give your company a point for punishing very mean workers who disrespect their co-workers. Very bad form in the workplace.

The posts above me explain much better than me why society seems to hate fans of the show.

I don’t understand why people want to hate on other people just because they like something! Doesn’t matter what it is, If you don’t like it, then just don’t worry about it!

Because some people are against the concept of people have their own interests, especially if it's something which isn't considered part of the norm. Unfortunately, it's just the way things are, on account for many being complete douchebags.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

Beside saying because it's the fandom itself, that's not an excuse. Fandom will be fandom just as jerk will be jerks. But yeah mostly because the society thinks that adults who like kids stuff is outside the norm, thus judgement.

Because human understanding is limited. That which is foreign may cause unease, translating into some form of aggression as a defensive measure.

Such behaviour is natural for humankind, given the current state of our evolution. I wouldn't ask for more. It is preferable to have them express prejudice, racism, mistrust and other symptoms of the limitations of their current awareness, than enforcing a behaviour that doesn't reflect their true nature.

Growth comes through the experience of ourselves, the way we are.

Maybe people who show hatred towards, for example, us bronies are, in fact, ashemed how we can be what we are and let our interests be visible, without fear of getting rejected.

The human race will find any reason to hate its fellow beings, even if it is a goddamn cartoon. I've given up reasoning with people like that a long time ago. Either they live with it or they are not worth my time.

If we're talking merely having a negative opinion on us voiced through healthy criticism, I don't have a problem with that. On the outside, I do see why someone would find grown-ups being fans of MLP weird. However, I just look at it as how old people tend to not get video games, it's just different life experiences for different people. If we're talking rude vitriol and legitimate hate, I just ignore it since I don't care, personally. If you're judgmental enough to deem me inferior over a pony avatar, I honestly don't care what you have to say.

I don't personally think we're looked down upon that much anymore. That used to be a main concern back in 2011-2014, not so much anymore. But it's mostly because society has certain opinions/standards and grown men (and women, but mostly men) watching children's shows about technicolor ponies isn't one of them.

Think most of the hate was during the Brony boom around 2012 since it was in the mainstream and nearly everywhere. Most of the hate seems to be just kids behind monitors.

I do post some pony stuff, time to time, on my snapchat with people I know IRL and no one really cares. But I guess it really depends on how you present yourself.

Who cares?

A few of my friends know I've watched the show and enjoyed it thoroughly. They poked fun at it initially but I didn't shove it in their faces and joked about it on my own.

It became normalized after quite some short time.

I've told a few random strangers too. At first they were taken aback but I didn't make a big deal out of it and just moved on, as if I just made a remark that weather is nice today instead of announcing I like the show.

They decided it's not worth caring about and moved on as well.

It's all about how YOU treat it. I wouldn't like it if somebody appeared in front of my face and started non-stop rambling on how they enjoy jogging and how awesome it is. The same works for every topic, MLP included.

Where I live I don't think anyone cares at all, I wear pony T-shirts at work an and I have plenty of plushies arround my work place. But if I do my work well, no one cares, besides no one is normal around here anyway ^_^

You are just lucky. I have to keep my IRL friends and certain family completely unaware who I am. It is not easy when I randomly start singing: "We were searching for our cutie marks, for a while THERE!" (I only get to the "We were" part and then I bite my tongue).

@Splashee Oh poor Splashee, that's to bad to hear. Your a kind of a closet Brony then?

I was like that for many many years, but then later... what a hay, I don't care what they think. If I like ponies then let them laugh, let them hate. idk

Absolutely closet Brony. I do feel like I have an advantage though. Some of my friends that wouldn't accept the stuff we have here actually starts developing other similar stuff with their age; good for them, but how do they choose to go on about it? It's just interesting to see them struggle to get out of the stereotype they so dearly held on to (and defended heavily).

Don't take this the wrong way. I have a lot of other common interests with my friends. It is just fun to see the hiccups that they start making all of a sudden.
