I am sometimes amazed by the subtle differences between people. I was raised to scoop and spread all things with a butter knife. It usually does alright and spreads things magnificently. However, some opt for a spoon to grab more material it seems. What's your preference?

Knife is good at spreading the sandwich goo over the sandwich, but a spoon is better for extracting goo out of a yar. I use whatever feels right at the time

If you can spread butter/peanut butter with a butter knife, you can scoop it with a butter knife (albeit, it would probably be easier to scoop peanut butter out with a spoon). Peanut butter is just one thing that I was never taught to scoop out with a spoon.

Depends which product. Peanut butter works better with the knife, because it won't leave a clump behind. OTOH, because jam's slicker and slippery, the knife's narrow width makes it harder to control, so I scoop and spread that with a spoon.

Sometimes I want some peanut butter, but can't be troubled to make a sandwich. One teaspoon of peanut butter makes the PERFECT snack! Yum. Guess what? Not kidding, but I'm off to the kitchen RIGHT NOW!

I've been scooping and spreading with a spoon all my life, it's easy spreading it with the backside of the spoon. Though getting that stuff onto the bread might be difficult, but I guess that's where the knife comes in?

If I'm making a PB&J, I also only use a single knife. First I apply jelly, then wipe off the blade with the clean slice of bread, followed by the peanut butter.

Almost off topic, but 2 years ago I tried two alternative peanut butter formats.

The first was Skippy Protein. The store was out of the regular large 28oz jars and I wanted big because it costs less per oz. I gave it a try, and it was "ok" but not as good. What was really good however, was the jar being just as wide as the 28oz, buy half as tall! That meant my hand stayed well away from the rim even when scraping out the bottom, and I was able to avoided the cursed buttery knuckles!

I was also a fool because half the height of the 28oz also meant half the size, and the regular small is 16 something oz, so I did not save on cost. :awwthanks:

The other format was Skippy's single serving packets. I can't trust things to stay clean where I work, so reusable utensils and keeping a jar there are kind of eh. I also like to find potential components for homemade MRE's and these were perfect! And because you squeeze it out of a sachet, a knife isn't necessarily necessary! :mlp_yeehaa:

The packaging is wasteful, but it's the only guaranteed clean option I have there.

My response has not changed since 2020 lol, I still use a butter knife and I don't ever recall using a spoon. Scooping with a spoon takes up more silverware so that's more dishes, unless you both scoop and spread with the spoon.

I see no practicality in trying to spread anything with a spoon, though younger me would jump at the chance to scoop out and directly eat a whole spoon of Nutella.

How am I gonna scoop Ice Cream with a butter knife? Is that possible? Kidding, I know this was referring to peanut butter, and such things. I use butter knife for PB and a spoon for jelly, jelly is not easy to scoop with a butter knife if you have the coordination of an elephant that needs eyeglasses.
