gaming Ever Speedrun a game?

Have you ever speed run a game? If so, which game and why?

Have you ever thought about speedrunning your favorite game?

Got any favorite speedrunner you watch regularly?

There are many ways to speedrun a game. Just trying to beat the in-game timer, or your own personal record in a time attack mode. You might have tried without even categorizing it as a speedrun. It still counts as trying to beat a game as fast as possible, or getting all the items in a game (usually called 100%) the fastest possible is still a speedrun. As speedruns of a game get more competitive, and times are lowered to their very limits, there seems to always be more ways to get the times even lower, such as finding glitches in games, or techniques to exploit game design faults to reach even lower times. Some glitches are thought as breaking the game itself and might not be as fun, but that just adds another category to a speedrun called "glitchless".

A Speedrun should not be confused with a TAS (Tool-assisted speedrun), which is a spliced together, edited with tools, fastest ever way to beat a game (which is not humanly possible, super human speeds). These were created with tools that weren't available when the games were released, and do in fact try to beat games as fast as possible, and do whatever it takes to get there. They are quite impressive to watch, and they are trying to beat a game the fastest way possible (only, there could always be faster ways still!). Search for your favorite game and "TAS" to be amazed!
TAS are not limited to emulated games, as there have been built robots to play the original games on real hardware using the TAS recorded input.

Always be prepared for spoilers when watching speedruns or TAS videos online, even if you have played a game a 1000 times, you might still get some secret of the game spoiled.

"As quick as you can" kind of speedrunning? Never.

"Under n hours" kind of speedrunning? Once so far, and only for the sake of a trophy. BTW, it was RESIDENT EVII.

Speedrunning is removal of fun from playing a game to me.

Well that's a great idea for a topic worthy your 12,000th post! :squee: Congratulations, fren! :kindness:

I never did a speedrun, but I was often playing with the thought. I think my game of choice would be Metroid. :) Or a Super Mario game. Doing the 100% in NES Remix was arguably the closest thing I did when it comes to speedrunning. And one achievement in Legend of Grimrock was about speedrunning through the first level. And there are of course the time trial modes in racing games.

I actually don't watch many speedruns live (too time-consuming). AGDQ and SGDQ are events where I sometimes like to tune in though! What I usually like to watch are the recorded WR's, highlights and I follow the news often. That being said, I love the content of Karl Jobst and Goose's Gamer Folklore. :fluttershy:

I'm no speedrunner, but there was a time when I was somewhat obsessed with beating every game as quickly as I could. I got out of that phase though when I realized how much good content in games I was missing out on that could've made them more enjoyable. Watching legitimate speedruns, however, is something I've always found very entertaining. My favorite speedrunner is Carcinogen, since he doesn't just do speedruns. He also does a variety of other high-quality challenge runs of games where he utilizes fantastic strategies, some of which I've honestly attempted myself.

I've been watching Legend of Zelda randomizer speed-runs and I'm just in awe every time I watch them. How they manage to know exactly what to do right down to the last detail makes me feel inadequate as a gamer sometimes. I could never hope to do the kinds of things they can do.

I did a speedrun of Pokemon X many years ago. Probably wouldn't do it ever again though.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

Never had the time, patience, or skill to speedrun a game myself but I watch EazySpeezy and DJSterf every now and then for speed runs.

EazySpeezy breaks down the game and doesn’t require you to watch his every move while speedrunning (the uncut versions are probably on Twitch or something, though). DJSterf is underrated as a FNAF gamer to me. He’s a lot more technical and much more calm than someone like Markiplier. He also has great speedrun strategies that are fun to watch all the way through.

Never. I'm here to be as casual and have as much fun as possible. I'm not here to seek glory in speedrunning games, and AFAIK not a lot of games that allow people to speedrun (yes, that includes Garry's Mod, Team Fortress 2, BeamNG.drive, Rust and Cities: Skylines). But yeah, I just don't find speedrunning games fun, it just defeats the purpose of exploring areas just for desperate fame in order to complete games as fast as possible.

Hmm not that I can think of. I don't have a ton of time to get invested in games these days and generally after I've played through something once I don't have much of a desire to do so again, or if I do, it's because I want to see something I missed the first time around or just take my time messing around for nostalgia purposes.

I tried to speedrun Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin a long time ago and gave up 3/4ths through the game and my somethingth attempt because it really started not being fun for me. I hated fighting some bosses under-leveled and having to restart the entire run should something unfortunate happen.

I did a bit of speedrunning a few months ago, first with Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity, then Saiko no Sutoka. It was fun and I'd like to try it again some day, maybe try some other games I enjoy, but honestly it's exhausting having to play perfectly over and over again for mere seconds/milliseconds.
