What do you love about living in your town?

We get fairly lucky when it comes to storms and snow. We don’t get hit nearly as bad as the towns surrounding us do. Really bad weather always just avoids us.

It’s a popular foodie town so never a shortage of good restaurants, it’s small, but large enough that there’s things to do, not insanely expensive (compared to other places), moderate politics that actually attempts to fix issues, has lower crime, great infrastructure spending, a few big businesses HQd here that’ll be bailed out by the govt in a major recession.

If it weren’t in the state it’s in, and the fact it seems to be a tornado magnet I’d consider it just about flawless tbh haha.

I love the action; there’s always something to do, at any time of day. I also love the weather; it’s sunny, warm and only mildly humid most of the time. And the nature; I live in a huge city, but there’s still a lot of palm trees and my favorite part; the jasmine that blooms here in the spring and summer. There’s no greater scent in all the world!

Very pretty older architecture, lots of wide open spaces/parks for pedestrians and no skyscrapers

Giant free museums and the chance to learn something everywhere you look

Beautiful in the fall and spring; lots of leaves changing color and cherry blossom trees

I can try food from pretty much any country within a 10 mile radius

Big vaulted metro stations, most don’t feel cramped at all

Lots of interesting people (could be good/bad depending on how you view it)

1. Area surrounding the town is mostly meadows, fields and woods. Also we have mountains, which I adore.

2. Small town, so life here is generally calm.

3. Easy access to big city, so whenever I need a bit more noise in my life it is no problem to get it.

4. During spring/summer/early autumn period the town is loaded with flowers to the brim as people here apparently love planting these ^^

Um.... Low cost of living, low crime rates, great high school band programs, it being a large, growing suburb near a city. It just sucks that everything else about it sucks so bad.

There were tornado warnings right outside of your city this Spring! Your area is not immune. Just like everywhere else in the miserable south.

We already talked about this. =P

There was no tornado :please:! It must’ve been a crisis actor. Not one certainly not many  .

Im aware of one real good school around your area (BA). That’s it. I dunno about others. They’d always pop up on top at Grand Nationals, when I was into that. Weird how one area may have a lot of top tiers in one place. Guess it makes sense because more schools in cities, more talent and arguably resources.

Yes, Broken Arrow is the most well-known. Funny, it was actually back when I was in high school that BA became big and won Grand Nationals for the first time. However, we have other bands here that compete nationally and some have made it to the finals. Union, Jenks, Owasso come to mind. Note, my thinking is a little outdated. While I've kept up with it somewhat, not anywhere near as much as when I was in high school or just out of it, of course. In the end, they all have great band programs even if not all of them compete at the top level.

It seems to be a regional thing. Back when I was in high school, the big states for nationally competing marching bands were Oklahoma, Texas, Indiana, maybe Ohio? Don't hate me if I missed one, or several. >.< It has been a verrryyyyy long time.

It's got a rustic charm. Lot of 19th century architecture. Beautiful woods and lovely rolling plains. Trees lining every road of the old town. Even the new sub division has beautiful houses. Autumn looks especially lovely around here. It strikes just the right balance between rural and suburban. I also like how my house is like a 10 minute walk at most from everything. I could leave my front door, turn left, walk three minutes and there would be a thrift shop, a mini mart cafe hybrid, the police station and a biker bar. Cross the street though the square and there would be the old train depot currently converted into a sweet shop and diner. This place just seems to strike the right balance in a lot of ways.

Accessibility. I have everything I need in the very near proximity. Really, there is a super-market, a gas station, kiosks, restaurants, ice cream parlors, butchers, greengrocers, dietetics, delicatessens, gyms, wineries, technical service, drug stores, drug dealers, hairdressers, boutiques, THE PRISON, art workshops, green spaces, veterinaries, medical centers, banks, christian churches, there is everything you could need.

What a wonderful world, wouldn't you agree?

Actually yeah I also recall Union being a big name. I think another one called… Kennesaw? Good chance any number of these schools could have dropped, others have risen. I know my former school last I checked was “finalizing” in our super regional, but that was years ago. I dunno how they’re doing now. We were decent in our local BOAs. We got creamed when I went to the 2010 super regional… ugh. Wish I was in the school’s golden age.

We did win a “national championship” at least that same year :P

that was honestly more of a referendum on which state has the best bands (Texas c: )

But yea, Texas has a lot of great bands. Especially north Texas (Marcus, LD bell, Flower Mound, etc). That was back in my day. Great for fine arts, not so much education.

I think Indiana. There’s Avon..

Oh, I remember the name LD Bell! I couldn't ever forget it. lol Wonder what happened to them after 2006, I think they won nationals the next year, but haven't heard of them lately.

Hahaha. I have to be careful around you or you might figure out exactly which school district I was in. I don't like giving out that info, not even here a decade and a half later.

Anyway, it was precisely because of the marching band program there that I even got in band. My cousin played in it when I was in elementary school and I thought it was the coolest thing. If that hadn't been a thing, I don't know where I'd be today. Bizarre to think that if I grew up in a better state (can't even name any marching bands from New England or New York. Sad, that), I might not be into music like I am today. Or perhaps it would have happened one way or another. IDK.

They were still top tier while I was around. I only saw them twice (back then it was only BOA every 2 years). I remember their Honor: We Will Remember show. The beginning was always so.... dramatic. Good as they were that year, Marcus swept the floor with them....

You mean your cousin went to LDB? (I heard they switched their callsign to "Bell High School" so they get announced earlier... lame. Not sure if that's still the case). Lucky  . And don't you worry; your secret is safe with you :orly: .

I mean I would assume schools in general and also their fine arts programs are pretty well up in the Northeast. I don't know of many names from over there though.

No, my cousin went to my high school. He was older, so was in it when I was in late elementary school to early middle school. It influenced me to join band. I don't have any relatives in Texas... that I know of. I just remember LD Bell from what when I was in high school competitions. Their name was up there with the likes of Carmel.

I'm afraid I've given enough information on this forum over the years to draw conclusions on this matter (and up until now, I didn't know of anyone in the region with knowledge on the matter that could draw such conclusions. So I'm a bit taken back lol). Thankfully someone would have to go back through my almost eleven year posting history to piece it together. xD My high school band director was pretty adamant on us not sharing the info online. That was so many years ago. I still adhere to it. The least I can do is still honor that request after how much of a drama queen I was to them back in the day. SMH.

The Northeast is full of fantastic music colleges/conservatories. I just don't think of the northeast when I think of competitive high school marching bands. If there are any up and coming I want to cheer them on and would do everything in my power to do so (whatever that means... IDK lol) when I move there to do so.

On-topic: To reiterate: Yes, I largely credit where I live for me getting into music. It's such a big detail about me it's weird to think that it could have not been. And having been born in a better state could have led me down a completely different path. I hate that such a big detail about me is tied to this terrible place. But I have to give it that much.

I live in a suburb of Boston. It's a nice quiet suburb with exceptional schools (apparently the best in the United States) while traveling into Boston is relatively quick. In addition, the town has the relatively dense housing and mixed zoning for small stores and walkable neighborhoods that makes it like halfway between the new American suburbs in the south and southwest and the older European cities. (I could go on forever about the urban design of American and European cities. Just ask.)

Boston has that New England feeling while simultaneously being a pretty large city, so there's usually something going on there I can attend if I get bored. (Boston is the place to go for New England seafood.) All the Bostonians say we have great sports teams, hospitals, and universities. Also, we are conveniently located near the Cape, and while the stereotype that Bostonians go down there every summer weekend isn't exactly true, it is a nice getaway spot.

I'm so... envious! (Ha)

Would love to live in a Boston suburb more than anything. Looks like the perfect place to live! Climate, politics, culture. If only it wasn't outrageously expensive. I may have to settle for suburbs of Springfield or Worcester if I move to MA. (Unless I go down the grad school path and can somehow get into a Boston university, than... Well. I'll have it made... for a few years. xD)

Ooo yes Carmel.. I'm really only good with names but didn't always know the school in particular xp.

Ehh don't worry about me finding out. Why would I want to do that  ? I probably shouldn't think too hard or else.

I think so too. Lol you should join one :P . Are you moving soon? I thought you said you were.

Indeed. Not always, but so often there's something special about our place of stay, even if the rest is just gosh-awful. OK is red because it's Boomer Country... ugh.

I see what you did there, and yeah, rent is insane here. But I guess that makes sense given that us residents are literally paying for the best high schools in the United States. What do you mean by politics and culture?

What about you? Which major city do you live near?

You get what you pay for, as they say.

I live near Tulsa, Oklahoma, and am looking to move.

The district around Lomonosov Moscow State University. Harmony of old Russian architecture and Socialist Classicism.

Like song:

"The greatness of Stalinist empire

And window glass reflects the church domes

The Iron faces of titans - are molten bells.

Third Rome"

I love the culture of my new Motherland. The harmony of contradictions as it is...

(Other part deleted because mods can cancel me because of talking about Russia too much. Today dictates its own rules.)
