Obstacle Number 4

As you continue trekking through the dark part of the forest, more and more trees shield you against the wind, making the temperature much more bearable. While following the cupcake trail, you are met with a path of thorny plants, bushes and vines blocking the way, with several ponies trapped among the plants. To your surprise, one of the ponies that you recognize as a fellow participant, is cutting through the thorns with his own wings.

"Hey! We need to get these ponies out. Can you help?"

When asked about his wings, he responds, "Ever heard of Changeling Berries? Funny little fruits, similar to Poison Joke, but with many random helpful effects instead. Look at me. They turned my wings into blades, haha! There are some in my saddlebag, right next to you. Grab some, and eat one at a time. The effects don't last long, so feel free to take more when you run out."

Use Changeling Berries to get trapped ponies out. Come up with creative effects to aid you. Each eaten berry grants a new effect!

Next obstacle on October 6th.

[Starlight Glimmer 151]

“Why yes indeed, Starlight! Behold the one and only, the totally best thing ever-Cupcake-inator 3000!” She announced like a salemare, her voice booming through the mic. “Guaranteed to fire the frosted goodness at high speeds, create a scrumptious breadcrumbs, I mean, cupcake trails, AND keeps our runners fueled for maximum pooooower!!!”

 

She gave the cannons a proud pat before aiming it at the foggy forest. One cupcake after another, BOOM! BOOM! A frosted trail formed, turning the scary path more like a candy land lane!

“Step right up folks! Don’t be shy follow the cupcake highway back to the race course!”

Pinkie leaned closer to the mic whispering like a conspirator to Starlight. “Starlight, it even has a sprinkle launcher attachment!”
 

Pinkie let out a small giggles, before popping back upright, voice loud and bouncy again.

”Cupcakes and directions! Two for one special everypony! Only from your friendly neighborhood, Pinkie and Starlight!” 

Starlight smiled as she was really impressed with the cupcake-inator that Pinkie had on hoof. "Sounds to me like you have another way to throw a party. Here I thought the Big Bertha party cannon you had during Princess Celestia's play was incredible. I do wonder if there's a way to make teacakes with that cupcake-inator." Starlight says, extending a microphone over to Pinkie via levitation. "Now, I think our audience members are all curious about this new cupcake cannon in your party planning arsenal. What kind of cupcakes are you able to make? Can it make anything that's not a cupcake? Does it have the port and starboard adjustments, as well as the turbo drive?" She asks as she heard the mention of the sprinkle launcher attachment, which lead to these questions.

With each cupcake being launched, a frosted trail began to form. "I guess the term follow the delicious frosting road would be very fitting right about now." Starlight says with a chuckle. "It looks like our competitors are following the trail! Some are having some treats as they run, while others are still trying to find everyone up ahead!" Starlight commentated, taking noticed of the silhouettes still covered from the dense fog.

*Priscilla then looks at the trapped Changelings and wonders if she could save them or not* "Hmm... should I spend some time letting them out or leaving them alone? I mean, I'm in a good position, but if I help them, I'd be in last place... ... Y'know what? Frick it, I'm gonna help them." *She then strategically decides to eat the Changeling Berries and lets them out one by one while other racers are catching up to her.*

[Moonlight Wane]

Moonlight listens as the pony talks about the berries. "Hmm. Sure, why not?" He grabs a bunch of berries and eats one. It only takes a moment for his body to become transparent and wobbly. "Whoa. Is it normal?" He moves his hooves, and sees droplets fly in every direction. "Oh, great. I'm water! And I thought I would run the rest of the race relatively dry."

Moonlight walks right through the plants towards the closest pony. The bat pony doesn't feel pain as thorns scratch his liquid body, and can pass through leaves and vines with ease. "Hey there! Let me help you." He approaches the pony who's tangled in vines and tries to untie them, but his watery hooves don't want to hold onto anything. "Oops. I guess we have to wait a moment for the effect to run out." He says as he looks around, pondering who to free next.

[Samurai Equine]

*Shiny Silvermoon's cheeks took on a pink color from hearing @Samurai Equine's praising words.* "I'm honored to be considered amazing by a heroic warrior such as yourself…" *She responded to him with a lilt of shyness, while they were running.*

*All of a sudden, she was hit by something going at high speed which fell from the sky. The mare was then propelled into the Japonese's hooves by the force of the impact. Her entire body felt weak and her vision blurred, as the cold was taking over. A red liquid was covering the point of impact, on her head.*

"I think this is it, colonel… It's a lethal blow at the head, nopony can get away with this…" *Shiny's eyes were half-lidded and her breaths were growing louder by the seconds.*

"War… War never changes. Colonel, promise me that you'll get those brave soldiers to safety…" *The unicorn weakly begged Samurai Equine, before being interrupted by a cough. She then took out, from her mane, a picture of a polar bear holding a croissant-shaped puppet in it's paw.* "Good bye, Bearpolar. Good bye, Croissanto."

"I… I can see the light… I see the liiiiight… Wait… This is just the blinding glow of your horn, Samurai!" *She ran a hoof onto the point of impact and gathered some cake batter into it.* "This is just cake with a cherry filling! Well, shiver me timber! I ain't going to disalive!"

*The mare immediately bounced away from the Japonese's arms and began to leap again with a huge smile, as if nothing happened.*

 

Samurai is so shocked by Shiny falling back that he stops to catch her in his arms. "But, Shiny...? Shiny. SHINY!!!" He hears her cries. He sees the photo. He tries to explain. For a moment, it looks so dramatic...
And then it's over.
Samurai stands there, dumbfounded. "1000-nen no choubatsu." He resumes racing to make up for lost time, and then...

Samurai eventually comes up the very strange sight. Finally getting out of the fog, he sees ponies trapped in the vines. "Are you the one I sensed earlier? I was expecting an enemy, but helping ponies is something I do best!"

Samurai rushes to the vines, grabs hold, and starts using his bare strength to rip vines apart! His only focus is setting trapped ponies free. Although, he does look at the fruit and ponder eating one. "...What benefits could these things possibly give? I'm all ready very strong. If I want an arsenal, I can magically summon armor and weapons instantly. Seems redundant, but..." In the midst of trying to help, Samurai does take one of the berries and stores it away for later.

[Dusk Haven]

*While @Dusk Haven was plunged in her deep reflections, a gleeful mare caught to her and was now leaping next to her.* "Howdy, again! It seems like we don't have to worry anymore about getting ourselves lost, with the help of Pinkie Pie!" *Shiny exclaimed to the alicorn, while a trail of cupcakes, that she had caught in mid hair, followed them, engulfed by the unicorn's magic.*

Dusk blinked at the string of cupcakes bobbing along in Shiny’s magic, then let out a soft laugh.

“Only Pinkie Pie could turn a dark, freezing forest into… a dessert buffet,” she said, her tone half-teasing, half-marveling. “I suppose if cupcakes are leading the way, we may as well follow. I’m still not sure about eating sky-fallen baked goods, though.”

She gave @Shiny Silvermoon a quick, sidelong grin. “If nothing else, it’s the first time I’ve ever been guided out of danger by frosting. I think I prefer this to the usual monsters and blizzards.”

With that, she shifted her stride to match Shiny’s, her eyes still scanning ahead, but the faint smile lingering as they followed the improbable trail.

"I couldn't help but notice that you were talking to yourself! I often do that too, when nopony is watching! But sometimes it's because I'm having a chat with the Moon!" *She explained to Dusk with a silly smile.*

"Anyway! Would you mind for a cupcake? I bet you could use a sweet treat baked with love! It would be a shame, if all those went to waste! I mean, baking so many cupcakes must not have been… a piece of cake." *The mare winked to her, as she offered a cupcake.*

Dusk tilted her head at the cheerful mare, one brow lifting.

“Talking to the Moon, hm? I’ve done that more nights than I can count… though I don’t think she’s ever answered me with cupcakes."

Her eyes flicked to the offered cupcake, then back to Shiny, a faint smile tugging at her mouth. “I usually prefer to know where my food comes from… but I suppose if anypony can make sky-fallen cupcakes safe, it’s Pinkie Pie. I might add that you are very persistent. I like that."

She took the treat in her own violet magic, giving it an experimental sniff, then glanced at @Shiny Silvermoon again. “Thank you. And as for your joke—‘not a piece of cake,’ you say? I’ll have to keep an ear out for more of your dessert wisdom...,” Her grin softened into something almost sheepish as she added, “It has been a long, cold trek. Maybe a little sweetness won’t hurt.”

[Pinkie Pie 685]

Pinkie puffed out the clouds of smoke and  rested the cannon on her shoulders. 
 

“turbo drive and it makes cupcakes, you name it!!” She beamed at Starlight,  pride practically glowing from her grin over her latest invention. 
 

“Looks like the ponies are facing a brand new challenge, ohh lookie lookie here Starlight!” Pinkie’s eyes darted towards @Nitobit Moonlight. “turning into water? Now that’s a splashy advantage! Talk about going with the flow!”

Then she spun towards @Samurai Equine “But let’s hope the water doesn’t get too close to Samurai, or those  the firey hooves might boil it all away!  Samurai decides to save his changling berries, what do think he will turn into Starlight?”

Pinkie suddenly gasped spotting @PrincessPriscillaPT munching on the berries. Her eyes grew wider with dramatic anticipation. “Priscilla has already took a bite of the berries! Let’s see what the berries has to offer her!”

Finally Pinkie turned her attention to @Dusk Haven with wide grin stretching across her face 

“Dusk is making her way to the next obstacle, and by the look of her face the cupcake was huge success!” She elbowed starlight proudly, practically bouncing. “See? I knew my cupcakes would be huge hit!”

*Shiny's interaction with @Dusk Haven was interrupted by the wall of vines and thorns blocking their path. Her eyes widened, as she noticed the several ponies stuck in the obstacle.*

"Mother of Luna! What is that?! We are fairly far away from the Everfree Forest so those sort of structures shouldn't be here! Did it just emerged from the ground, without warning?! Okay, there's clearly someone who wants to cause harm to us! But who?" *The mare quickly strung one sentence after another, as thoughts were wrestling in her mind.*

*However, it wasn't the right time for questions so she pushed them aside, in a corner of her mind, to focus on the ponies stuck in the vines. Without further ado, the unicorn swallowed one of the changeling berries, at her disposal.*

"Let's see if I'll add another transformation to my already too long list!" *It was meant to herself but she said it out loud.*

*Suddenly, she felt an odd sensation on her flank which leaded her to discover that the silver crescent moon of her cutie mark had vanished. Loud screams escaped from Shiny's mouth.* "THE CRESCENT MOON ON MY CUTIE MARK!!! IT'S GONE!!! THERE'S ONLY THE TWO-TAILED SHOOTING STAR LEFT!!!"

*The mare's screams abruptly came to a stop, when a larger version of the silver crescent appeared in her hoof.* "Oh! There you are! Who gave you the permission to go out! Your mother has been so worried because of your irresponsible actions!" *She scolded the inanimate object, before throwing it, out of anger.*

*Alike a boomerang, the crescent moon sliced through some vines and then returned into her hoof. She didn't even throw her in the direction of the vines but, somehow, it knew where to go. It gave an idea to the unicorn who started throwing it randomly. Each time she did, vines were severed which liberated many of their misfortunate prisoners.*

[Iridescent Edge]

*Once Iridescent had warmed up, he followed the cupcake trail and continued the race. When he encountered the vines, he came to a screeching halt. Not knowing how to proceed, he looked around at his surroundings. That's when he noticed the saddlebag of Changeling Berries. He picked one up in his magic, examining it.* "What exactly do these do?"

[Moonlight Wane]

Moonlight waits for his effect to run out, before untying the pony trapped in vines. "Here you go. Take some berries. They should help you get out of here." Having said that, he finds a new target, and pops another berry into his mouth.

Wzipp! He teleports next to @Iridescent Edge, with a flash of otherworldly, purple sparks.

As she mutters a quiet "okay", he grabs her leg, and tries to see how deep in the bush is it trapped. Wzipp! Moonlight and the mare materialize back next to other contestants, safe and sound, with him still awkwardly holding her leg.

[Iridescent Edge]

*Iri sniffs one of the berries and cautiously plops one in his mouth.* "I don't feel any-Whuh!" *Iridescent nearly toppled over as he felt a sudden weight grow on his forehead. He looked up to find that his horn had grown at least another three feet. Judging by the cut vines where his horn had stumbled, it looked like it was also sharper. Iridescent grunted as he lifted his head, his now elongated horn wobbling above him.* "Well, this is inconvenient."

[Samurai Equine]

It's safe to say that Samurai stopped using his fire magic after seeing the imposing vines in his way. It's just not needed at the moment. After freeing a few trapped ponies and racers, Samurai takes a moment to see who has caught up. In doing do, he sees the various powers @Nitobit Moonlight is exhibiting, the moonerang that @Shiny Silvermoon Shiny got, and the increased horn size that @Iridescent Edge Iridescent got.

"Hmm... Well, maybe one fruit couldn't hurt. Please be helpful." Samurai hesitantly eats one of the berries he has been saving. His jacket suddenly becomes a protective cloak, and in his hooves is a pole weapon. On one end, a jumonji yari; on the other end, a naginata. "...You know, I never though about combining these kinds of weapons before. But lets give it a chance!"

With a warrior's focus, Samurai stands up right, concentrates, and prepares his weapon. When the moment is right, he lunges forward and expertly begins to swing his weapon around in many directions. Hundreds of slashes! Tons of vines go down. Somehow, not a single trapped racer gets struck in any way, completely avoiding getting hurt. And the more Samurai keeps this up, the more he creates a tunnel through all these wild vines!
...But he also stops knocking down leaves to do this...

[Shiny Silvermoon]

*Meanwhile, far away from all the action, Shiny's pet, Socrate, was spending time with Moushley, @Samurai Equine's pet. The fruit bat was mainly staring at the mouse, in a state of trance, while small hearts were floating around him. Suddenly, he heard the voice of a vendor selling cheeses to the crowd of spectators.*

"Swiss Cheese! Bri! Gouda! Buy some cheese!" *The stallion was yelling, while carrying a set of cheeses in a wooden box hanging to his shoulders by a leather band.*

*An idea emerged into Socrate's mind, after hearing the vendor. He scribbled something on his notepad, before quickly flying toward him to land on his shoulder. He then showed to him the piece of paper and dropped a coin. In return, the stallion gave him a slice of Swiss Cheese with holes.*

*Once the transaction was over, the fruit bat went back to his secret crush to offer her the slice of cheese.*

Between Moonlight turning to water, Samurai ripping the vines apart, and much more, Starlight wondered what was happening in the forest. "I wonder what kind of berries those were. At any rate, it looks like our participants are transforming and changing before our very eyes! As for Samurai, I want to say maybe he'll gain a fiery suit of armor. Given that his name is Samurai, after all. Either that, or maybe he'll be able to form some type of sword out of fire to cut down the vines!" Starlight says, watching as Priscilla started to eat one of the berries. "From what these berries can do, it makes you think that anything and everything can happen. Only time will tell! As for Dusk, I will never doubt you on you and your cupcakes, Pinkie. Sounds like a cupcake party is in the works in the near future." Starlight winked as she started to scan the forest for the other racers.

"It looks like Shiny has a crescent boomerang! Mowing down the vines like a lawnmower! At the same time, it looks like Silver and Bright have caught up to the others! I wonder what kind of transformation the two will go through in order to take down these vines." She commentated, while noticing Iridescent Edge had also caught up to the others. "With Iridescent taking the berries, it looks like his unicorn horn became even bigger! Using it like a sword to try and cut down the vines! Wait a minute. Pinkie, look!" She pointed over to @Samurai Equine, who had taken one of the berries. "The jacket that Samurai was wearing turned into a cloak, while he gained a pole weapon, as well!
