First game ever for me, as I'm sure it was for a lot of people, was Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt.

Fun fact, Earthbound (or Mother 2) is the second game of a trilogy. Do yourself a favor right now and play the developer approved fan translation of Mother 3.

Yeah I read about it being very bad (and hard) in comparison to the other games, so hard that to make it easier the translation patch gave you some sort of ring at the beginning of the game to give you double exp or health or something, its been a while as I said.

I liked Mother 1. Its different then the others, and you need to grind a lot, but still a great game for the NES.

 

And the story was awesome too.

Nowadays I would have trouble with RE1, just because the controls are so damn archaic by todays standards.
