I heard the news that Disney is going to re-release Finding Nemo and Beauty and the Beast in 3D within the next months. I have to admit, even though they will be 3D conversions, that re-releasing a movie is a much better idea than remaking it.

Case in point: Have you guys watched the remake of The Thing? It was horrible! They could have saved themselves a buttload of money by just re-releasing the original John Carpenter remake. People would've gone watch it!

What do you guys think? Do you preffer movies being remade, or just re-released?

I honestly prefer it either or. Don't have a huge opinion on it. I don't watch movies much anyway but as with games I tend to like remakes of old movies more anyway, if only because I recognize the actors/voice actors more.

TBH I don't know much about re-made/re-released movies, but I DO know about re-rerecord/re-released music.

If the person can re-record the songs properly, without tarnishing their reputation in the process (Destruction's Thrash Albums) then I'm all for it. But if they had a somewhat drastic change in their line up and they decide to re-record an album (Exodus' Let There Be Blood), I'd advise to go with a re-release.

Alternitavely, re-releases can suck too. If they can change the quality of the original by changing the production, it could hurt the album popularity rather than help it (2004 remix/re-release of Megadeth's Rust In Piece). But it could also do the opposite, and actually attract more fans to the album, granted it were mixed properly (2011[?] re-release of Death's Symbolic/Individual Thought Patterns).

I don't really like any of them. Both are just a way to milk a franchise and to make more money off something without having to spend the time and ressources than when it was first created thus making the margin of profits larger. It's basically companies trying to make more money off something they already created instead of making the effort of creating something new.

But if I had to choose between the twos, I'd go with remakes since they at least bring A BIT of original content. Re-releases is just releasing the same thing that was previously released. I just don't see the point and I would certainly not pay to go see a movie I have already seen. But maybe that's just me, idk.

It really depends. Some things I like re-releases, some I like remakes. For example, the lion king 3D release was awesome, and I think most animated movies such as that benefit more from re-releases than remakes.

Older games, I like remakes of, since they generally add new stuff, update the graphics and sound, and it ends up being awesome. A prime example would be pokemom heartgold and soulsilver. Crystal had always been my favorite version, but HG and SS took the game and made it even better.

I don't like either of them...Marshmallow explained it best.

That said I would consider going to see one if I love the movie and maybe never got to see it on the big screen.

Prefer remakes due to them possibly adding new content and updating it for a modern audience... IF the original work in question is really really old and has lost its appeal. Something made in the 90's though? I don't think that needs a remake. ...Typically. Depending on how cheesy it is. I prefer remakes in video games though because of what Evilshy said. Nicer graphics, more content, and on a system I can actually access rather than having to buy an old one. HGSS is a great example of a successful remake.

I think most re-releases are pointless and trying to milk things (especially if they re-release it in 3D. That is absolutely pointless) UNLESS the movie has been out of theaters for a really long time and could attract a newer audience from a generation that has never seen it, giving it more exposure. I'm okay with things like ET getting a re-release. Things like Finding Nemo? Why? That's fairly recent.

I have always been against remakes that use the same name as the original. That is just very confusing and often annoying since the original (unless being so old it is obsolete, like black and white movie stuff) is usually a classic and deserves to be "the only one of its kind".

I far prefer re-releases. Not only are they usually better but they also have a nostalgic aspect that I like. I loved it when Beauty and the Beast was re-released with the 3D treatment, but I would have loved it even more of they’d have included the Human Again song from the Special Edition. That’s one example of an original movie with a new angle, so there are instances where you can have it both ways, sort of.
