Is Berry Punch the New Derpy?

I'm sure everyone was a bit surprised by Season 3's distinct lack of everyone's favorite cross-eyed Pegasus. All we have so far is the same train cameo in the opening from last season and a speculated head. Perhaps the animators have moved onto a new game for us?

 

 

Berry Punch is obviously not a Crystal Pony, so what is she doing here in the Crystal Empire? I would be perfectly happy to have more out of place appearances of everyone's favorite alcoholic background pony.

She was, but just as a regular background pony. She was a part of the angry mob asking Twilight to take care of the Pinkie Problem.

I wouldn't say she's the 'new Derpy' but I think of her just as a popular BG pony like Bon Bon and Colgate, she deserves more screen time IMO anyway xP I forgot where the last time we saw her in an episode.

That's what I like about MLP is that the animators give a lot of background ponies their own personality and charisma. I would love to have more Berry Punch appearances as I think it adds to the charm of the overall show.

There will never be a replacement for Derpy. I do agree with you though in the sense that there is a potential for her to be a "Where is___?" pony.

 

I hope this doesn't turn into a situation like when a kid's favorite toy is broken and instead of fixing it they try to push a new one on them. But, we're all mature though.... (Me: NO! I want DERPY!)

I honestly detest Derpy and I would wholeheartedly agree to have Berry Punch replace her. Having Derpy gone forever would be something to celebrate for me

 

I like the easter egg of Berry Punch among the Crystal ponies, though. It seems intentional to me.

I have no great attachment to Derpy personally. (Seriously, I still think she should be Ditzy Doo, but whatever.) Despite this, I have to say "neigh" to Berry Punch replacing her as the show's "Where's Waldo?" substitute. I mean, Derpy has a history and everything. Has Berry Punch ever popped up out of a well? Has she ever emptied a tub of bobbing for apples? I don't think so. And adding in the "alcoholic" pony is just asking for a backlash from those groups inclined to complain about poor role models in children's animation.

Well, the alcoholic part is purely fanon.

 

Derpy isn't really travelling with Doctor Whooves. She isn't actually a single mother. She might not even be a mailmare (even if the comics definitely point to that being the case)! I think people are capable of separating the fan's MLP world and the official one. They have so far.

I don't think she's replacing her, as much as just appearing. I mean they said before S3 was released there will be more derpy in the background.

I would like a general explanation as to how alcohol as been in any way connected to ponies....

Why is it that she is considered alcoholic? I have seen this a lot in Fan Fictions and it is annoying me to no end. Perhaps because I am strongly agaisnt alcohol, but more so that i don't know why the connection was made in the first place?

I don't know either, I think it has a somewhat origin to that episode were she drinks from the punch bowl, even though I'm also a bit confused on how it makes her an alcoholic.

 

As for the thread, I doubt she'll become the new Derpy, even though I would prefer if they just got rid of Derpy o3o

Sure why not? I would enjoy the purple, drunken, soon-to-be alicorn to be the "where's waldo" of the upcoming seasons. Derpy will be remembered but has been used in enough fanon to take her out of the background spotlight.

she has been in both episodes, she just been harder to find, so she is more of a wheres waldo pony rather then fan sevice.

also she is still in the intro however the intro hasn't been changed.

Maybe the animators and Derpy are in a partnership to mess with the fans. Derpy teaches her ability to... Um... Pinkie Pie 'Port to cool situations in the background, so all our background ponies can make appearances. Obscure hint that the background cast will interact with the Mane 6 to some extent?

 

So Derpy's started a find-the-hidden-pony-or-object race. Derpy herself will only appear once or twice an episode (No more Sonic Rainboom Complete Derpy Family Appearance 5-Derpy-At-Once) and be more and more well hidden (To the point the animators may rely on subtle cues to tell us when/where Derpy is, with a whole Derpy/background-cast episode crammed full of them), even resulting in large portions of Derpy being obscured by other ponies and objects in the scenery. Other ponies, however, will join Derpy as being background prominent-finds, with Berry Punch being Derpy's A+ student, major hint to Derpy's presence, and a cue if anyone background other than Derpy or new ones or clones will appear.

 

Derpy will also drop a bunch of objects around Ponyville in some portion of an episode as a background event (Or they use a new intro for Season 3, which has Derpy carrying a package depending on what episode it is and if the hidden object game will be played), and you can spend the rest of the episode trying to spot the items before Derpy and/or her associates find the objects.

I don't really see how she can be the new Derpy, because Derpy is Derpy, and you can't replace Derpy. :') I personally just think that Berry Punch as a popular background character.

I highly doubt Berry will replace Derpy. Although she's become a somewhat popular background character in her own right, she is nowhere close to the popularity of Derpy, who's basically the mascot of this fandom and the key that communicates the bronies with the staff.

 

And Derpy has appeared in the two-parter and "Too Many Pinkie Pies."

According to one of the animators, that scene was supposed to imply that she was an alcoholic, but I think it had to get toned down a little.

Derpy is still in the show, and was in both the season premiere and the next episode. The animators are just stepping up the difficulty, which probably makes sense considering we've made a little game out of finding our blonde wall-eyed mare. What better way to respond by increasing difficulty, to now we have to put some effort into it?

 

All I have to say about that is...

 

 

Hints for future episodes:

-Watch for other popular background characters as well. They'll be out in the open, but in the past two episodes Derpy was spotted in the vicinity of them, usually on the opposite side. (ie Berry Punch on the opposite side of the Jousting Ring, and Dr. Whooves [two of them to be exact] in the crowd surrounding Twilight's Library were on the opposite side where Derpy was.

 

-Derpy's position now will be far more obscure. Instead of focusing on center foreground and background, look in the corners and behind ponies, as that's where Derpy was found in the past two episodes

 

-The past two episodes Derpy was shadowed and facing away from the camera, so don't rely on finding her eyes. Look for the gold and grey.

 

-Be patient. Derpy's in there somewhere. Even if you miss her the first time around, be sure to look back and see if you can find her.
