gaming Favorite Open World Game?

Recommended Posts

Open world games have become a major genre in the past decade for gaming, with GTA generally being what comes to people's minds. So I ask you my friends, What is your favorite or favorites?

Mine would definitely include Farcry 3 and Oblivion/Skyrim. These games basically define awesome open world gaming to me

Skyrim

Grand Theft Auto 3

Fallout 3

Morrowind

Oblivion

Wind Waker (Might seem like a weird choice, but the world was pretty open to the player)

I wouldn't say WInd Waker is open world, but if it was, then it would easily be my all time favorite! Such a great game. loved every moment of it

Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and probably... Fallout 3. Did I mention Fallout 3? I have played at least 2000 hours combined on those two games. I haven't even finished the FO3 DLCs yet, so it'll be awhile before I get bored of it.

I'm actually in my first playthrough of that game, and I have to say it's absolutely fantastic. I may play New Vegas next, but I'm also considering going back to the first two (which are remarkably different from what I've seen). But yeah, it's already a favorite. Nothing beats blasting a bunch of enemies while listening to GNR, well except for maybe Skyrim. But that's my overall favorite lol. :D

I really really REALLY loved Red Faction: Guerrilla. It was just so fun, blowing stuff up in an environment where pretty much everything can be destroyed, the weapons like the Remote Detonated Charges were extremely fun to use, and the vehicles were fun to drive around in such an interesting world, though it may be red (since it's on Mars) most of the time, there is just something that has always stayed with me... I love it, especially the weapons and the amount of destruction that could be made considering the size of the environment :)

I think I will just say that my favourite open world game is Mount & Blade Warband. It has a wide and challenging game play. You can rise your own custom army and do anything with it. I like how I can build a relation with many lords from various faction and do some political movement to make my own kingdom. Well, being a bandit is also interesting though. Burning villages and raid caravan.

1. Burnout paradise: For an open world game, there was immense detail. You never saw repeat structures, the architecture of buildings looked beautiful, the countryside felt like a real countryside, and the radio was flippin awesome.

2. Fallout: New Vegas: With mods, this game is amazing. Sorry Fallout 3, New Vegas left you in the dust.

3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind: I'm not even being lazy, if I had to go into detail about why I love this game, it would take me a good few paragraphs.

4. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Epic game, with a large, beautiful world, plenty of places to explore.

5. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Isn't it obvious why this game is awesome?

6. Saint's Row: The Third: I always have a whale of a time when I play this game.

7. Grand Theft Auto V: Great fun, no more explanation.

Open world games are king!

Zelda: Twilight Princess. This game is so damn big, it would literally take you over an actual monty of gametime to do and find everything. And the map is huge.

Skyrim.
Really, it's hard to beat, it's just so amazingly big, and the gameplay is amazing.

I love it how still months later I came back to it and I find all sorts of cool new things that I didn't see there before. It's amazing! :D

2000 hours? Holy shit. At the least though, I can say I kinda know that feel. I've probably racked up at least 500+ on Oblivion, since it's pretty much one of the only games I've consistently played throughout the years. Morrowind has much better storytelling than the others, and Skyrim of course makes use of much better visuals as well as slightly better AI. And of course I'm aware of its faults.

I still think Oblivion's the best for me though. I've been playing it for years now. There's probably more mods for Oblivion than there are for Morrowind and Skyrim combined. People are still making more mods for Oblivion than Skyrim, even though the latter is newer. Can't get bored of Oblivion, not with all this new content being added.

I know it's a weird pick, but...

Spider-Man 2.  I love the controls and I love being Spider-Man.  Some of the challenges are really hard and I get satisfaction out of beating them.  I love finding the exploration tokens.  And just swinging around the city is fun!  People complain helping citizens is boring, but I treat the game more like an open world 3d platformer than an action game.

I hate most open world games actually.  I like GTA Chinatown Wars and Bully, but I played those like linear games.  I really don't like the PS2 GTAs.

Skyrim is pretty good though.  Good controls and world, and I like mining and making jewelery (makes me feel like Rarity).

I love you.

I'm very surprised at the lack of people saying Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Perhaps it's because not many of you could count it as open-world, but I have to disagree.

[spoiler Alert - highlight the white text between \'s if you wish to read them]

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a masterpiece. It's a wonderful game for new shooter fans and professionals alike. The world itself is enormous - it's very similar in feel to Skyrim and other bright landscape games. What got me was that it was a world of... steampunk, urban cybernetics. It screamed metallic futurism. You have two urban hub levels, \Detroit and Hengsha\, and each have a multitude of different characters who'd either give you a very believable pass-by or a quest to do. Each hub is absolutely labyrinthine, and wildly fun to explore, be it of your own accord or while doing quests and learning the ins and outs of these enormous city streets. It also helps that there is the most chilling, mature, complex and outstanding plot to go with it - an age where prosthetics have become more advanced than real limbs, and all the ethical issues that can be raised.

The developers of Deus Ex: Human Revolution prioritised the multi-option element above everything - they'd never create a single level without several ways of completing it, be it through guns blazing, stealthy sneaking, social persuasion or computer hacking. I've completed it four times and I'm still discovering new routes and options that never appeared to me before. I especially love how much of a bearing social interaction has on the outcome of events - it could mean the difference between obtaining the key to a building or having to sneak in past elite guards. The skills you can get - called augmentations - correlate to your preferred gameplay style, and instead of one giant skill tree, there are 21 initial augmentations that can each be upgraded by skill tree - ranging from \cloaking devices and magnetic landing systems to the ability to punch through walls and configure security turrets to shoot down the guards that set them up\! I was also definitely impressed with the depth of the computers you pass by in the offices and buildings that make up the dungeons - each user has their own inbox with work notices and, at times, humorous conversations with friends that also tie in to the background of the game. I think it might be even more complex than Skyrim.

It's probably one of my favourite all-time games, and it's well-deserving of being called so. I highly recommend it to every one of you, no matter what genre of games is your favourite. It does require a high-end PC to run smoothly, bear in mind.

Funny thing, I didn't even thought of GTA.

Definitely The Elder Scrolls series, Fallout (not only Bethesda Fallout) and Deus Ex series (even tho that is semi-open world and story driven, yet in a way where you have the feeling of absolute freedom, plus the hub areas are HUGE).

Ha! You're nuts. Only me and crazy people count time spent in Fallouts in thousands of hours.

But it's amazing feeling, isn't it? You spend 500 hours of gameplay on a character and there still is a lot of stuff to do. Not even mentioning mods. There is one amazing "mod" that allows you to fuse F3 and FNV + all DLCs for both into one big game. Now that is a blast.

Well what the hay man? I only have it for PS3, so I guess mods are out of the question. Thing is, if you spend more than around 100 hours on your character, the file size gets too big and the game gets laggier than a COD match between chinese and australian players. Combining FO3 with FNV eh? Is it like a situation where they recreated the entire FO3 world and had some kind of railway passage that swaps between the two worlds? I swear to Celestia, the PC I'm using better be able to play Bethesda games and mods without crashing.

No Just Cause on here? I mean, the plot was rediculous and it could get glitchy, but it was good!!!

Skyrim will always have a special place in my heart.

Minecraft? No one's said that either? Can you classify it as an open world game?

L.A. Noire was a fun, as well as the contrasting GTA (4/Vice City)

Saints Row 3rd!!!!! Absolutely amazing.

That's all I can think of at the moment... or maybe Assassin's Creed? That's open-world-y!!!

Oh, PS3? I pity you. Bethesda does lousy job porting to PC, but they do even worse job with PS3.

The mod I mentioned doesn't recreate anything, it just allows you to basically plug FO3 and all DLCs it has into the FNV game as an addon, so you can freely travel between both worlds and play the FO3 storyline, but having the FNV gameplay changes (like the hardcore mode), just as well as taking items from FNV to FO3 and vice versa.

Also, mods are wonderful, for example, I currently play as a robot (AI if you will) ally of the Brotherhood. Not mentioning virtually unlimited number of new weapons, armors, quests and better textures.

 my list is below.

  1. Amnesia
  2. The Grudge
  3. Minecraft
  4. Midnight Club
  5. GTA Vice City
  6. Skyrim
  7. Dungeons And Dragons Daggerdale
  8. A Kingdom For Keflings
  9. A World Of Keflings
  10. Uncharted 3

And that's it.  I don't know if you would count Minecraft as an "open world game".  I guess you would.  Anyways below you can see a pic of Amnesia.  Also as I said I am going to become a gamer like Pewdiepie, Tobuscus, Nova, and all the other really cool dudes out there.  Later on check me out, I am Pnaramaturtle5.  I am going to play a lot of Amnesia, The Grudge, and so many others so look forward to it.

Now this character is the main thing trying to kill you in Amnesia.  It goes by many names.  For instance, Pewdiepie calls it The Bro.  Whereas I call it The Captain.

Thank you all for reading my reply to this topic.  I hope to read a lot of good ones from you and I hope to make a lot more friends on this forums.

Y U no mention ARMA or DayZ?

Yeah, my favorite open world game is probably transformers, the hugely underrated PS2 game made in 2004, that was my childhood......

I see people here saying that the Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3/Vegas are apparently the best open-worlds out there... Largest? I can agree on that. Best? Not so much. Their games have flaws, which I'm strangely unable to pinpoint. Thank god my amazing analyzing skills.

Anyhow though, I'd say (and yes, I know it isn't really an open-world game...) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. After beating the first dungeon, pretty much a large portion of the map becomes available. Link to the Past comes close, but I feel that the lack of story and lore makes the world dull and uninteresting.

My nonsensical two bits.

I have Morrowwind but never got around to be playing it. Jeez, what am I missing out on?

Skyrim and, if you count it, Spore were two excellent free-world games. Fallout looks good enough too.

Also, Dawn of The Dragon is an EXTREAMLY underrated game with ridicously great graphics and amazing gameplay. It has free flying for petes sake :P
