I think she'll control Friendship, which IS Magic (Friendship is Magic), which is the sixth element of Harmony.

She could maintain friendship in all the ponies in Equestria, which would also maintain harmony between them.

And that would kind of help Cadence with her job, too.

Well, this is actually a pretty good question which I also never actually thought of until now:

However I did figure out my opinion on it: She´ll represent all three of those things.

Why do I think this? Well, as the name of the sereis states "Friendship is magic" magic and friendship belong together in the world of MLP. They are pretty much the same thing.

As for the the harmony; magic is one of the six elements of harmony so Twilight will already be in control over one part of harmony and all of the elements of harmony are connected to one another by friendship. Without the friendship between Twilight and Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Rarity, Pinkie Pie and Applejack the elements wouldn´t work. So, I believe that all three things are connected to one another and can´t be seperated.

She has the cutie mark for it, the name for it, fits with the Nightmare Moon legend "the stars will aid in her escape", she was looking at the moon when those 4 stars converged on it.... accidental control simply by expecting it to happen?

 

And her whole inspiration that led to becoming a princess was watching Celestia raise the sun. I think she needs a celestial object to control, rather than just an ambiguous domain like friendship... although her cutie mark does very specifically symbolize friendship, being a star (element of magic) surrounded by 5 other stars (the other 5 elements of friendship/harmony)... but friendship is magic, so it also symbolizes magic, and it's also stars, so any of those 3 things could be her job to maintain.

Twilight is in between night and day. She may be a filler aiding and learning from the other princesses for now as Cadence was before she found her own kingdom. She will have to earn her own as Cadence with the Crystal Empire. As for a subject to control, magic seems the obvious choice. She has more magic potential than any other pony Celestia found. Celestia also mentioned Twilight Sparkle created 'new magic' in the finale and perhaps she will provide magical protection as her brother has in the past but a different kind with her new magic. Perhaps her affinity for creating/using spells combined with the elements of harmony amplify her powers. Perhaps a villain strips regular magic and she brings her magic back to fight with. That would be interesting.

I must say I've been thinking about this a lot but it's still tough to answer. Based on the fact that Twilight is outstanding at magic, a great friend, and the beholder of the Elements of Harmony.  Although the show is about friendship I think that she'll be the princess of magic.This is because this is what she's done her whole life and friendship is technically "new". Plus if they made her the Princess of Friendship that would be like putting an end to the show since she is just being introduced to friendship (i understand she's been learning about it for 3 seasons) and she wouldn't have to send essages to Princess Celestia about her experiences. Also. I'm sort of upset that she's a princess because now she'll get over whelmnig attention if she trys to hang out with her friends in Ponyville since she's now a princess AND an alicorn. Over all I'd say "Princess Twilight Princess of Magic"

Probably Magic, and Friendship like some other people said. Plus the elements of harmony. She's a special pony but she's still young so they'll probably just have her learning what it means to be a princess at first.

We don't know how young Twilight actually is. If i'm correct a pony's lifespan lasts depending on how much magic they have.That's why Celestia and Luna have lived so long, and twilight has a lot of magic so she might have already been alive for quite some time.

it is friendship it should be fairly obvious because it is what the hole plot of the show is about think about it FRIENDSHIP is magic and how Celesta in season 2 episode 1 says your friendship showed the full potential in the elements of harmony to defeat a mighty foe.

Obviously it's gonna be friendship and unity between people ponies. The same way Cadence's magic is geared toward love and harmony, Twilight's will be geared toward friendship and happiness. She did become an Alicorn for discovering the magic of friendship just as Cadence became an Alicorn for discovering the magic of love. Luna controls the moon and people's dreams because that IS her defining element, and Celestia controls the sun for the same reason.

i dont think that Cadence commands love i think she just have a very rare love spell(also if you consider her cutiemark a crystal heart id say her magic love spell doesn't grant a person love but only magnifies or concentrates love that already exists in someones heart thus she cant force ponies to love but only increase what love that pony already has) same with celestia and luna they dont command the sun and moon they just have the ability to raise and set them, if you would recall the "Hearth's Warming Eve" ep it was stated that before celestia and luna was born unicorns were the ones that raised and set the sun and moon

 

plus if the Writers and producers of the show are gonna follow on Laurens original plans for twilight, twilight will eventually replace celestia as the Ruler of Equestria

I think Lunas Sorrow is right to an extent, in that none of the Princess are the 'deities' of their associated domains per say, but that they're just capable of doing things within that area with their magic. In a way Twilight could be the most considerably powerful Princess with time, considering that her talents are all of magic in general. 

 

Personally I like to think of it as akin to how nobility in real life works. Twilight will probably receive some form of dominion or administrative duty, more likely the latter. She won't become the living representative of friendship or magic or harmony or anything like that. She'll just be known for her good grasp of those things.

Friendship = magic. Thus, her cutie mark = friendship. Any unicorn can use magic, so to say her power is over magic is just saying she's a particularly high level unicorn.  Nothing too special there. And since friendship is magic, her cutie mark and her crown symbolize friendship, not just general magic.

 

The elements of harmony used to be wielded by Celestia and Luna, because the sun and the moon used to bring harmony. Now, friendship is more important, so Twilight and her friends wield it. If love suddenly becomes more important in maintaining harmony, I imagine Cadence could wield it as well.

 

Twilight got her cutie mark in magic, but she became an alicorn due to specifying in the magic of friendship. Therefore, her talent is magic, but her "profession" is friendship.

If I may say so myself this is my personal view on the issue:

 

Twilight as an Alicorn just like Cadance, heck not even Celestia and Luna doesn't truly "control" anything. This would go against the overarching theme of the show if Twilight suddenly "controlled" friendship or harmony. If you've noticed consistently throughout the show, the Elements of Harmony do not just activate on the whims of the wielders. Rather the wielders must have the right morale, state of mind and conditions to use them.

 

This is not just some ordinary magic here. If you think about it friendship and harmony are abstract concepts. You can't simply "control" them at your whim if you don't have them or properly understand them. It makes sense why someone like Nightmare Moon or Sunset Shimmer could not wield them: they did not have those qualities nor properly understand them. Each time they were used, like the Crystal Heart, they were used when there was harmony, like in Friendship is Magic Part II and upon Discord's defeat.

 

If anything Twilight would be a wielder of friendship/harmony not a master or controller of it. She has earned the privilege to wield friendship as a leader, and should she fail to properly do so, that right may just as easily be taken away. Besides to suggest that she controls friendship suggests she is somehow inherently superior to her friends, which despite any ideas viewers may be getting from Magical Mystery Cure is not the case according to the show's writers. She merely brought them together as a leader and friend and like all leaders whether they realize it or not, she is only as strong as her friends.
