My favorite has to be Christopher Eccleston, because he really seemed like a sort of protector of the Universe and not the goof that some of the other Doctors were. (Although he was still funny.) Also many of my favorite quotes were made by the ninth Doctor.

I love Nine! He would have been my favorite, but he only had one season, so...

Classic Who was the only part of Who that aired in my country at all. Filipino Whoofian here.

Interesting, didn't know that. Canadian here. We didn't get the first two doctors, and we were a couple of years behind the UK, so we got Jon Pertwee on. When the 10th Anniversary special 'The Three Doctors' aired, I was *very* confused at the time. :)

Eh, I tend to stick with Murray Gold XD.

Anyone a fan of Classic Who?

I have over 70 Classic Who stories on DVD, so I must be a Classic Who fan!

My favorite Classic Who story is "The Five Doctors", as it was one of my first Classic stories, and Peter Davison is my favorite Classic Doctor.

Huh. I don't think we got the last two either. We aired up to 'Caves of Androzani', then Colin Baker's first season didn't get through-possibly because of over violence.

Yay! Someone else who loves Fivey! Not enough people love him :D

My updated list of Doctors and their respective tenures (this changed sometime recently due to a marathon of several episodes) would have to be:

1.Tom Baker-10/10

2.Peter Davison-9.9/10

3.Sylvester McCoy-9.5/10

4.Patrick T. (Not bothering to spell that last name because AutoCorrect)-9.4/10

5.Jon Pertwee-9/10

6. Matt Smith/Christopher Eccleston-8.8/10

7.Paul McGann-8.5/10

8.Colin Baker-8/10

9.William Hartnell-7.9/10

10.David Tennant -7/10 (HATERS GONNA HATE)

I started watching it from the William Hartnell era quite a while ago and stopped somewhere during Patrick Troughton era for some reason. I really need to get back to watching that.

On a Classic Who related note, I like how they aired the first ever serial for the 50 year anniversary. The documentary was also quite nice! One last thing, I got to see some of the actors from Classic Who at a convention, and that was nice.

Speaking of Classic Who, the writer for the first two episode of series 8 says the show is now gonna start being more like Classic Who and that Capaldi is going to be much darker.

I sincerely hope it's going to be the 70's kind of dark (Kind of scary but still kid-friendly enough and fun) rather than the 80's (weird-as-hell dark)

BTW, Matt Smith's episodes were ranked last night.

I think it's gonna be the 70s kind of dark. I don't think they wish to scare the living day-lights out of the kids who watch the show

I'm also a fan of Classic Who.  Don't really have any 1 favorite doctor.  I like the first 4 and the 7th doctor and Ace.  The 6th doctor I like Colin Baker's idea, but think he is far better served in the few Big Finish Audios I have heard.   The era I like best is starting around the 2nd story, the daleks, (skipping over the historicals) through around the time Leela left.  After that it's hit and miss with some stories I like and some I do not, though there are some duds within that era.  I do like the 1st episode but not the other 3 episodes of An Unearthly Child.  Though some stories have way to much padding, due to budgets I can see why they would want to stretch this setting as much as they could.

With the new show I don't like the writing very much.  I've liked the actor's portrayal of their doctor characters and some of the companions, of the episodes I've seen.

Most people would count me as a new Doctor who fan because I mainly watch the new episodes but I still have watched classics and I think they're awesome. I just watched the Angels take manhatten last night and my heart pretty much died at the end.

As this happened last year and my memory isn't the greatest, at the moment the only people I can remember are William Russell (Ian Chesterton) and Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman). I wish I could remember the others, but like I said, my memory isn't great.

As a Matt Smith fan I agree with those top 5. "The Day of the Doctor" was one of Matt's greatest and deserved to be 1st, "The Eleventh Hour" was a great starter for him, "The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang" is the best series finale of New Who (for me), "The Doctor's Wife" is pure awesomeness and "Vincent and the Doctor" was spectacular and heartwarming (it should've been 2nd, but that's just my opinion)

"Vincent and the Doctor" was beautiful. I cried when the Doctor brought Vincent to the museum and the curator told them about how Vincent Van Gogh was a gifted genius that the world wasn't ready to appreciate in his own time.

From this picture, I think they're going to bring back some of the daring do (Yup, I said it!) of the Jon Pertwee era. I've seen all of Pertwee's episodes, and they were wonderful!

First as in 'An Unearthly Child', or first as in 'Rose'? Just out of curiosity. :)

Funny thing is according to this one website

I watched the scariest episode first (blink)

And the second scariest episode second (waters of Mars.)

And even funnier, I had to watch blink at a summer camp when I was 7. The councillors surely had messed up minds

Yes... sorta? The new series does fairly well, but there will be references to the classic series that you'll miss, and there will come bits that won't make much sense without additional context. Whether that will damage your enjoyment of the series is up for debate though.

However, actually watching the classic series will take quite an effort now. A significant chunk of the very early stuff was destroyed, so all they have left is the audio and some still images. They're in the process of recreating it with animation, but there's a lot still for them to replace. That aside, there's 26 seasons of the classic series so it's going to be a bit of a slog. It gets easier when you pass Season 6, as you're then past all the lost stuff, and the seasons drop from about 45 episodes a season to about 25.

EDIT: Sorry, I wasn't particularly clear with my answer to your actual question. Yes, you will miss stuff, but at least early on nothing you miss is particularly important.

Some kind of summary of the old series would probably increase the chances of you catching those references, but I've not been able to find a good one that you can consume quickly.

I say watch New Who first, you will still be able to understand everything just fine. And you will be able to watch new episodes as they come out. Then watch Classic Who in the off seasons. That's what I did.
