gaming Journey (PS3)

I did a quick search and didn't see a topic on this... Has anyone here played "Journey" on the PS3?  It's an indie game that was released last year, the last in a series by ThatGameCompany, and it's quite frankly one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life.

For those who haven't seen it, the game is pretty simple: You play an anonymous robed figure who starts in a desert and makes a journey through different landscapes toward a distant mountain.  Along the way, you encounter fantastic creatures made of cloth which do all sorts of interesting things, from grant you the temporary power to fly, to forming bridges and other structures.  The whole game takes about 1-2 hours to complete.

The unique thing about this game is that while you play, you occasionally connect with another player.  You don't know who that player is (there's no identification), you can't talk or communicate with the player in any way except to sing (using a button), and you can't compete with the player at all.  You simply share the journey with them, or you can choose to leave them behind.

That's all I'll say about it, lest I spoil the experience for anyone who hasn't played it yet.  But I will say that it has some AMAZING music, some incredible visuals, and it's one of the very few games that will make me openly cry, even though I've played it through several times now and know what to expect.

And no, this game has absolutely nothing to do with Journey the band, or the terrible arcade game based on it back in the 80s. :)

I love Journey.  It has good graphics, an amazing storyline, and suspenseful struggles.  It is just a beautiful work of art.  I also like most of the games made by the game company who made Journey, "That Game Company".  Games like The Unfinished Swan are examples of how good these guys are at designing good videogames.  Check the spoiler below for some pics.

I hadn't seen Unfinished Swan yet - might have to check that out.  The company's previous games were flOw and Flower, both of which are basically simple but beautifully executed art games.  (flOw is famous for also exploring the concept of dynamic difficulty while simultaneously being a game about relaxation and exploration, instead of adversity.)

I've played Journey before, and it's one of my favorite games of all time. I adore the music and the visuals, and there is something special and unique to be found with every other traveler you encounter on your journeys.

Actually, The Unfinished Swan was developed by Giant Sparrow, not thatgamecompany. thatgamecompany has only released three games (excluding their mini ones): Journey, flOw, and Flower.

Seriously. Get the Unfinished Swan. If you love Journey you'll love that game, even though it isn't by thatgamecompany. Make sure you're sitting on your couch/bed with a warm blanket, hot coco, some headphones (if you have any for PS3) and just take in everything that game has to offer. I love that lady's voice whenever she's telling the story.

And Journey is such an amazing game. It's not Game of the Year 2012 for nothing. It's sad to see that people automatically look at it and assume it sucks because it's an indie game, short, and uses few controls. Also love the coop mode of it and its anonymity. Does anyone else get a little heartbroken whenever your partner leaves the game?

Thought this was fitting:

Oh boy do I love this game. I was recommended to it by a friend and didn't actually buy it for a while because I kinda thought it looked terrible. Oh was I so wrong... This is the first, and only, video game that I ever actually thought was beautiful. The music, composed by Austin Wintory, is some of my favorite in gaming. I also loved the interaction with your partner. I remember I was first paired up with someone who had collected all the scarf pieces and they helped me along the way to get all of the pieces. That made my day, I felt that this person cared about my well-being as his in game partner and that I he wanted me to succeed just as I did him. It is very hard to describe to what makes this game great, it just, is.

It looks really cool but I have yet to sit down and play it. (What is wrong with me?!)

I have to go buy it and complete it someday. My life depends on it! :D

Are you talking about Journey Collector's Edition which has like 3 games in it? If so then by all means give it a go someday. It looks like a very soothing and relaxing experience.

Actually yes that is the exact copy I'm talking about :P I had no idea it had "like 3 games in it" though I thought it was just journey. Knowing that it's even more enticing now ^_^

It is probably the most beautiful game I have ever played, next to flower. Journey is the reason I bought a PS3.

It probably says something about the system when the best reason to get one is an indie game.  (I mean, the game is wonderful, and well worth playing, but unfortunately it's the ONLY game I find myself wanting to fire up my PS3 for these days.)
