My region doesn't have many factories.

 

Our community has less cars too, because we have such a small population that we barely get on the State Farm maps.

I have decided I shall use this topic for my random testings I do. Also to confuse you guys. Both are fun. 

 

BTW, the great and glorious OCD Lords commanded me through my dreams to reorganize the emote panel so that all the characters are actually together. Also Sun Love would be first since they are new.

I was hoping 'random' meant the tests were on matters related to probability, like how many heads can you get in a row when flipping coins, or how many times one can worship their god without incident.

Something my brother told me: saying that a baby has a 50% chance of being, say, a boy is incorrect; the gender is already predetermined (at least I hope it is), so saying that a baby is a boy but you're 50% confident with that statement is more accurate.

 

Being 30% sure a new airplane prototype will work isn't the same as saying the prototype has a 30% success rate, either. I don't understand statistics...

I think technically, everything in the universe can be considered to be predetermined. Perhaps sometime in the future, I'm going to flip a coin and it'll come up heads. Right now, before I'm even holding the coin, we could consider its outcome to be predetermined. But in the present, I have no way of knowing that. This is why we say it has a certain chance of becoming heads. We aren't omniscient, we don't have perfect information, so we use probability to make up for our lack of information. I think the reason it's considered incorrect to say something has a 50% chance of happening is that if we did had perfect information, we'd always know for sure and we'd have no need for probability. But we don't have perfect information, so it's just easier to say the event has a 50% chance of happening. So if you want to be extremely pedantic, it's wrong to talk about it like that, but it takes a lot more words to explain the situation properly that it's fine.

 

In the case of the baby, I wonder whether their gender is considered predetermined the entire time before it's born, or only once their parent's DNA has mixed and they start forming in the womb. Is it correct to say the baby has a 50% chance of being a boy before the baby starts forming? I personally don't think so, I consider the gender predetermined at all times.

 

Then again, I might just be speaking nonsense right now. It's really hard to explain my thoughts clearly. But probability is one of my favourite areas of mathematics, so I'm very interested in this stuff. But this is really starting to feel less like maths and more like philosophy now.
