This is more of a rhetorical question. Hopefully, this subject won't get too touchy. :/

But I heard a saying, "I'd rather die than suffer" and thought from other people what they think.

This depends.

Suicide is generally not the best way to solve anything. Suffering through something is generally much better then killing yourself permanently.

Now; with that said, suicide being the worst option... Sometimes death is much better. Not for some people in first world countries, however, unless they're living on the streets. It would be better, in my opinion, to be dead then to be in a war zone, or constantly starving.

As per majority (Not specifically); in North America, Europe and possibly Austrailia, suffering through something is the better solution. In third world countries, I'd say death.

The answer depends on the severity of the situation. Death is quite a permanent thing that should not be taken lightly and it really screws up my immortality plan. One has to make that decision based on circumstance and there are definitely situations out there where one would be better off dead than being alive while suffering incomprehensible pain.

Depends. Can I, through ceaseless hard work and patience, end this suffering? If the suffering is something like poverty and terrible community, things that are possible to overcome, then I would choose to grit my teeth and stride through it. But if the suffering is more like be in endless pain until my frail body finally broke under the life support, then I would rather die.

As long as hope exists, I will always choose life over death. If there's even the slightest possibility of getting out of my situation, then I'd pick suffering. If it's something like being stuck in hell and tortured for eternity, then I'd pick death. I certainly wouldn't give up without doing my best to find another solution.

A jungle tribe once captured me and asked me this same question.

I said, "I'd rather die."

They answered, "Very well. Death...by suffering!"

I broke free from their ropes and, while escaping, yelled that it was the worst joke I'd ever heard...

This is actually something I've pondered quite a bit. Given my family history, I'm doomed to severe Alzheimer's in old age, so this is a very real and plausible question for me to want an answer to.

Short answer, it depends on whether or not there's significant hope. For example, (I'll assume it's a disease we're talking about), if it's gonna kill me without question and make life a living hell until then, I'd prefer to be offed right then and there. Likewise, if it wasn't going to kill me, but would leave me bedridden in a constant state of pain, then I'd say the same.

On the other hand, if it was going to kill me, but not be bad until it did, I'd like to keep going. And, if it's terrible at the beginning, but can be treated and life will go on as normal, I'd gladly power through it to show it who's boss.

Really, for me, it's an issue of quality of life. If I can still be up and at 'em, I'd like to keep going. But, if it's gonna make the rest of my life terrible, then there's no point in continuing a life that cannot be enjoyed. So again, it varies depending on the situation.

Indeed.

"I love life . . . I'm sad, but at the same time I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like, it makes me feel alive, you know? It makes me feel human. And the only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt somethin' really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good, so I guess what I'm feelin' is like a, beautiful sadness."

That's a really interesting saying, and I must admit that I agree to it 120%. I do suffer from things, but they have not reached a critical level yet, but, if, let's say, I get cancer, I go blind or my current things (which give me agony/anxiety) will reach a critical level, I would choose to die instead of suffering it any longer if I was given an opportunity to choose between life or death.

It all depends on which level i would suffer.

If there is a way out from it would would bare with it, if i know there is no way out ii would rather be dead.

Simple as pie.

Like what everyone else is saying...it all depends.

If you're suffering as in, you're in pain and you will die regardless...than dying is like a blessing...why suffer to death when you can just make it quick ?

But if its suffering as in...being depressed...again, it kinda depends. Why you're depressed...how bad it is. Stuff like that. I feel like dying when you're depressed in some cases is nice...because sometimes that's just what people want and nothing can really pull them out.

I'm not saying don't try to get better...if there is a chance you can get better and not suffer (With both Depression and pain) Than fight for it...even if the likes of you getting better are tiny...it is still one small chance you can go on living happily...

Reminds me of 1984...

Noone did simply killed Winston. He just had to suffer a lot, he was wishing for death, he was begging them to kill him.

But they didn't. They just made him suffer until he got totally brain-washed, they totally changed him, they technically took his previous live from him, they gave him thoughts he despited the most..

and then, they killed him.

It also reminds me of Notre Dame de Paris. Esmeralda decided to suffer, to stand up to the suffering so she wouldn't have to lie. The lying would make her die. The suffering lasted for few seconds. It was too much for her, so she screamed to stop and chose the death instead. We know that in the end she escaped death anyway and died later but doesn't matter.

You can't just choose one.

Honestly I would hate to just keep lingering on. It's just too much of a hassle just being in a hospital, well... suffering. I would want my time to end very fast. Possibly pass in my sleep.

I don´t quite understand... both of them made their decision, the circumstances might change that...

I believe there is a certain level of pain/ pressure it takes to break people...

After that this question is completely irrational.

Other than that, I would choose to suffer, suffering still includes (and if it´s the tiniest bit) of chance to get out of it alive.

  • 7 months later...

I would rather just suffer, because sure dying would be nice, could see my friend and be with some of my family that dose love me! but a lot of ponies need my help still.. and I cant just leave them like that its not right on any level. "For the great good" is what I live by... in other words. "Think of others before you would ever think of yourself!"
